We don't see Alex or Jordan until lunch, they sit down at the table with us and we start talking. I groan and poke my milk carton with a french fry.1
"You should eat." Damien tells me.2
I look up at him, "the last time I ate the food these people gave me I was out for a week with food poisoning." I prompt and continue poking the milk carton. He looks at Alex and Jordan who nod in confirmation.3
"So how's your first day back so far?" Jordan asks me.4
I glance up at him wearily, "it's amazing...they think I'm insane but they still just looove to make my life hell." I shake my head, "anyway, did you get everything settled with the...uh...thing?" I add.5
"We've got it worked out, we have to get escorted to our lockers and to lunch and stuff so there aren't any incidents." Alex says, taking a bite of her sub. 6
I nod and hold Damien's hand underneath the table. "So how's your first day going, Damien?" Alex asks.7
"Eh, it's my first day here and I'm already about to kill people." He says quietly, taking a sip of his milk.8
"Maybe it's just me but I'm just waiting for someone to chuck a milk carton at the table. That happens every year and we all get showered in milk," I say lamely. Alex and Jordan nod.9
"Jesus, these people are sadistic! How can the teachers and shit allow this to happen? In my old school if this was going on and someone found out someone would get suspended!" Damien shrieks. 10
I shrug and let go of his hand. I cross my arms and lay my head on them, with a soft groan I kick the air underneath the table. My feet don't even reach the floor I think shamefully.11
I can feel Damien's hand rubbing the small of my back, trying to comfort me. I heave a sigh and lift my head up, trying to lighten everyone's mood i crack a small grin, "you should hear some of the shit they're saying about me being gone." 12
Alex leans forward, interested, "do tell."13
"First of all, Katrina Brooks was working at the drug store when I bought your pregnancy test. She's going around saying that I went schizo on my parents because they were going to kick me out or something for getting pregnant. Another one is that I tried to kill my dad because I heard voices that told me to." I went on and on for about five minutes, telling them all the rumors that had been spread about me.14
"I'm sorry." Alex says quietly.15
I laugh, "don't be, I think it's hilarious! I mean, honestly, me, trying to kill my dad? I've been attatched to his hip since i was born and they're saying I killed him?" I chuckle, "I just think it's funny that they're all stupid enough to believe it."16
The bell rang and lunch was over, Damien and I were sent to Health and Jordan and Alex had to go back to their classroom. We slog through the rest of the day lazily, off somewhere in our own heads. 17
When I get home I pound upstairs, throw my bookbag into a corner and flop on my bed. My mom is at work and I groan. My house in entirely silent and I go downstairs to call Damien, Alex and Jordan.18
I dial Alex's number first, she picks it up on the third ring, "hello?"19
"Hey 'Lex, it's Arachne." I say quietly.20
"Oh hey Hun, what's up?"21
"I was wondering if you guys wanted to hang out? I was going to get the trampoline out." I say temptingly. 22
I can practically hear the thoughts running through her head, she covers the phone piece with her hand and shouts something to Jordan, I hear his muffled response and she says, "we'll be there in five minutes."23
We hang up and I dial Damien's number only to get the same response. I smile and head out to the shed to get the parts for my trampoline and begin putting it together. This is going to be great. I think giddily as I piece it together...I hear Jordan's car pulling into the driveway and run out to greet them.24
