Jaded: Chapter 7

"Jade! Jade, honey? Jade?" Jade rolls over on her side. "Wake up! Everything is fine. You can go home now," informs the same nurse that was in Jade's nightmare.1

"But... but..." Jade mumbles, still thinking her frightening reverie was real. "I thought I was going to die!"2

"No, silly!" responds Dr. Black in a juvenile fashion. "You've been asleep for quite some time. I must say, though, I am thoroughly uncertain of where your absurd idea of death came from. The transfusion was successful."3

"Is she awake?" asks an apprehensive voice outside the room. A woman answers softly, and then the voice is heard again, this time exclaiming, "Thank God!"4

Instantly, Jade recognizes the "voice" entering her room. It is her mother. The one Jade loves so very much, but can never seem to hold on to. The one who is there to teach but never to hug. The one respected but never showered with kisses. Jade's mother was never one for "extreme friendliness," as she called it; she would raise her children in a safe, healthy environment, but compassion never seemed to present itself. But all that is now gone. Jade looks up to bright eyes and an affectionate, everlasting smile. Jade would never in a million years believe that she is looking at her mother, except she has to believe it. Her mother is genuinely there. "Come here, my daughter," are the barely audible words lost in a zealous hug.5

“The anxious faces of the hospital workers have turned to benevolent smiles,” Jade notes in the notebook her sister rescued from the depths of under Jade's pillow. "Home. How can I go back? It seems like another part of me now. I don't know if I can ever return to the way I was. Well, the way I was before all...” Jade pauses to think of what she should write next. "...this. I wonder if anyone missed me. Or even if anyone noticed I was gone!" Jade thrashes her palms against her pillow. In an effort to alleviate her sudden strike of inexplicable fury, Jade puts down her notebook.7

......8

From the waiting room, Jade's sister shouts eagerly, “Jade, time to go! Come on!”9

A nurse, after quieting Laura, enters Jade's room and switches on the light. Jade smiles and grumbles dramatically to the amusement of the nurse. Jade carefully heaves off her blanket and scrambles out of her bed. The nurse helps Jade remove her hospital gown and hands her an outfit. After the nurse departs, Jade puts on her new shirt and slips on the pair of old jeans she is so fond of. “Ready!”10

And Jade, her sister, her mother, and her father (or, I guess you could now call them her family) dash out of the hospital and race to the parking lot, hop in their minivan, and drive off into the distance. The only crimson in sight is the bright-colored sunset on the perpetual horizon.
