The Five Sovereign Lords: The Corting Crossroads

Chapter 11

“David! Time to get up!” shouted a voice from down the stairs.2

“Five more minutes mom!” he shouted back sleepily.3

“No! You have been saying that for the past fifteen minutes. If you don’t get up now you’ll be late!” his mother shouted back.4

David slowly rolled out of bed. He was a tall brown skinned boy with short spiky black hair and very black eyes.5

“Hurry up and get ready,” shouted his mother again.6

“Yes mom, I am moving as fast as I can,” said David cheekily.7

Ten minutes later David walked down the stairs in his school’s P.E. uniform and sat down at the dinner table. 8

His mother walked out of the kitchen carrying a stack of pancakes and a bottle of maple syrup. She was a shorter than David and was fair skinned. She had bright blue eyes and long, black straight hair.9

“Eat up honey, we are leaving in fifteen minutes,” said his mother setting down the plate of pancakes and the bottle of syrup on the table in front of him.10

“Ok mum,” said David beginning to eat the pancakes. 11

“You want anything to drink?” asked his mother. 12

“No thanks,” said David as his mother walked into the kitchen. “Maybe some milk please?” asked David quickly.13

“Here you go honey,” said his mother pouring him a glass and giving it to him.14

“Thanks mom,” said David taking it from her.15

He finished his meal in silence and washed his dishes.16

“Come on your going to be late if we don’t leave now!” said his mother sternly.17

“I am always going to be late,” said David under his breath. 18

“What was that honey?” asked his mother distractedly. 19

“Nothing mom.” said David quickly.20

“Where are the directions David?” asked his mother impatiently.21

“Right here mom,” he answered tiredly, giving them to her. 22

“Come on let’s go, and lock the door behind you!” said his mother walking out the door. David followed half-heartedly and slammed the door behind him.23

Twenty minutes later, they arrived at Wendshire recreative grounds and David stepped out of the car. 24

“Bye David,” said his mother giving him a kiss. 25

“Bye mom,” said David giving her a kiss as well.26

She drove off and David walked to the field.27

“Hi David!” said a cheery voice from behind him.28

David spun around and stuttered “Er... hi Dianne, how are you?” said David.29

A tall, girl with long black hair, pearly white teeth and the most beautiful face he had ever seen was standing there.30

“I am fine and you?” she asked.31

“I am fine too,” he responded blushing slightly. 32

“So are you competing in any of the races today?” asked Dianne.33

“Yeah as many as I can,” said David turning to the field again.34

“What are you looking for?” asked Dianne as he turned his head scanning the field.35

“Not what, who,” said David correcting her.36

“Ok then, who are you looking for?” asked Dianne smiling. 37

“Arthur, have you seen him anywhere?” asked David scanning the field again.38

“No I haven’t, why?” she asked turning her head to the field as well.39

“He was boasting yesterday that he would get here before me. He can’t get up early to save his live so I was going to rub it in his face,” said David smiling. 40

“Ok,” said Dianne turning to David.41

“David, do you think I’m pretty?” she asked him seriously.42

“Hmmm,” he said distractedly “Yeah I think your pretty,” 43

“Great, now turn around and tell me that again,” she said folding her arms. 44

David turned around slowly to face her. “Yes I think you’re pretty. Who doesn’t think you’re pretty?” he asked.45

“Arthur!” she shouted.46

“What Arthur doesn’t think you’re pretty?” he asked incredulously. 47

“I don’t think whose pretty?” asked a voice from behind him.48

“He’s right behind me isn’t he?” asked David sheepishly.49

Dianne nodded slowly and David turned around.50

Arthur was a few inches taller than David and he was also his best friend. He had deep brown eyes, fair skin and shocking red hair.51

“Nothing, just that you would be pretty upset when I rub the fact that I beat you to our school sports day in your face,” said David keeping a straight face.52

“Right,” said Arthur sarcastically. “How are you Dianne?” he said turning to her.53

“I am fine,” she said blushing slightly.54

Arthur seemed to not notice this as he turned towards David. “Do you think you will be able to keep your title this year David?”55

“Yeah I hope so, It’ll be the third year if I do,” said David wistfully.56

“What title?” asked Dianne. 57

“The world’s fastest Secondary Schooler,” chorused David and Arthur together.58

Dianne laughed again showing of her brilliant white teeth again.59

*60

“Let’s go see when the races are going to start,” said David. 61

“I’ll race you,” said Arthur. “You in Dianne?” he asked Dianne turning to face her. 62

“No thanks I’ll watch,” said Dianne standing back and smiling.63

“Ok then,” said David. “On your marks, get set.... go!” shouted David sprinting of with Arthur close behind. 64

David got to the notice board first and almost tripped over the low wall a few feet in front of it.65

“No wonder you’re the fastest fourth former, you left me in the dust!” said Arthur panting heavily. 66

“Thanks,” said David. “Now the first race begins ten minutes from now,” said David. 67

“Great now we just have to wait for Dianne,” said Arthur turning to look at her.68

“Do you still like her?” asked Arthur seriously. “Well yeah, but it’s just that she’d never go for a guy like me. I mean we don’t exactly have the best history. My dad and her mom went missing on the same day remember, and they were last seen together at that old abandoned house ,’ said David frowning slightly. 69

“True, but you never know, eh? Never hurts to try,” said Arthur wistfully70

“There you are Dianne!” shouted David as she neared them. “Yeah, I wanted to take my time you know, to sow the contrast between us!” she shouted back. “Notice I haven’t tripped on anything,” she said smugly. 71

“Ha-ha,” laughed David humorlessly.72

“So what time is the first event starting?” asked Dianne.73

“Ummm, six minutes from now,” said David checking his watch. 74

“Well let’s go then,” said Dianne walking of with David and Arthur trailing behind her.75

When they got there, they sat on the ground and were greeted by some of their other friends and schoolmates who took seats next to them.76

“Will all the people who want to compete in the male fifty meter dash please come to signup!” shouted the P.E. teacher.77

“Well I am running,” said David jumping up. 78

“We’ll watch,” said Arthur and Dianne together.79

“Don’t blink, you might miss me,” said David jogging of towards the teacher while Arthur and Dianne laughed.80

After signing up and taking his position at the starting line, David looked at Dianne and Arthur. They were laughing at something Arthur had just whispered in her ear and she was blushing.81

He was distracted by this until the rest of the competitors were called to the start.82

“On your marks, get set.... Go!” shouted the teacher.83

David easily outstripped the competition and cruised over the finish line with the other competitors far behind him.84

After being declared the winner David jogged over to Dianne and Arthur who were clapping enthusiastically.85

“Good job David, but I nearly missed the race because I blinked,” laughed Dianne.86

“Yeah, you were just a blur,” jumping up and hitting David on his back. 87

“Thank you, thank you,” said David bowing.88

“Dianne it’s the female fifty metre race next, would you like to participate?” asked David sitting down. 89

“Yeah I will,” said Dianne standing up and walking off.90

*91

“So what were the two of you talking about?” asked David.92

“We were just saying that if you ran any faster you’d go into the future,” said Arthur with a slight smile.93

“So why did you need to whisper that into her ear?” asked David eyeing him suspiciously.94

“Ok David. I was telling her how pretty she looked,” he said looking at David “You know she is always asking that question.” 95

“Anyway lets watch the race,” said David turning towards the field.96

The race began and Dianne soon outstripped her competitors and she crossed the finish line panting slightly.97

“Good job Dianne,” shouted David and Arthur together as she approached them. 98

“Let’s go get some water,” said Dianne. “I’m thirsty.” 99

They got up and walked over to the canteen. 100

“Three bottles of water please,” said Arthur to the woman there. 101

“Here you go,” she answered handing him three bottles. 102

“Cheers,” said David taking his bottle. 103

“David, Arthur and I have to tell you something,” said Dianne.104

“Yeah David,” said Arthur smiling slightly.105

“Arthur and I have been going out for the past month and we have decided were going to be going steady!” said Dianne excitedly.106

“How come you didn’t tell me you were dating?” asked David quietly.107

“We wanted it to be a surprise,” said Dianne crestfallen.108

“So all this time you’ve been asking me if I still ask her so that you could check if the coast was clear, Right?” asked David.109

“Well if you didn’t want to be with her why shouldn’t I?” asked Arthur frowning.110

“So my two best friends are dating and not one of them tells me. Especially as one of them know I like the other,’ said David quietly.111

“Were sorry David but-,” began Dianne but David cut her off.112

“There is no good reasons so don’t waste your breath!” he said harshly. 113

“Hey don’t you talk to her like that!” said Arthur indignantly.114

“Yeah because she’s your girlfriend I guess. Anyway, thanks for being such good friends,” said David Coldly and turning around. “Yeah well thanks for your support!” snarled Arthur.115

David walked off slowly. He couldn’t believe that his two best friends would do that to him. 116

He found a clump of bushes behind a tree and sat down. After all this time they could have mentioned something to him he thought furiously.117

“Aargh, this stinks!” he shouted slamming his fist down on the ground. 118

“Ouch! What the!” he shouted again. He looked down at where he had hit his hand and gasped. A small black handle was poking out of the ground.119
