When love walks without steps [Chapter 3]1
The morning’s crisp taste is in my mouth once again, a new day. As some would say a new beginning to start. Though, I’ve never believed in any of that stuff. Yeah right. If everyday was a new beginning it would suck. it does suck. Restarting the day over and over again, only to find a world full of war and pain. What joy does this world bring me? 2
“Jeremy!” I cry comes from the hallway. Her cry is fragile and desperate, and hangs in the wind burning my ears. I wonder what Roxy has done now. 3
My legs move slowly out of the bed and I push myself into my wheel chair. “What is it Roxy?” There is a moment of silence in-between what she says next. “OH, there you are.” Roxy walks into the room, her black locks of hair in a hair tie in the back of her head. “What was it you wanted?” She looks dumbfounded, standing there, long black pajama bottoms, a black shirt that says ‘Sarcasm is one of the services I deliver’ and a weird looking bracelet with peace signs all over it. “I was just wondering where you were, I couldn’t find your room. I’m sorry, this place is kind of big compared to the place I lived in.” I wonder where she had lived, but I didn’t ask. From a poor family I expect. Her clothes are very old. 4
Her head hangs down like a wilted rose. “Roxy?” She turns her head back up smiling within seconds. “Yes Jeremy?” 5
“How about today we go buy you some new clothes? The one’s I’ve seen you wear look pretty old. how about it?” 6
“I-I don’t know. It will com out of my salary right?” 7
Does she think that I would do that? Really?8
“Roxy, no. Is there a shame in a friend buying another gifts?” 9
“No…but still-”10
Roxy is cut off as Jeremy wheels closer to her and says “Get dressed were going out.” I smiled trying to make her face light up. Sure enough, her face lit up with joy and she ran out of my room. 11
“I’ll be ready in ten minutes!!” She yelled 12
I’m glad I can make someone happy, I am making her happy right? That’s what I want to do. Or at least I think so. I don’t want her to be miserable . So I must want her happy. Though, I don’t want to get too emotionally attached to her. If I lose her, then…NO. I’m not even going to think about it. I refuse. 13
Sure enough ten minutes later, Roxy and I were heading out the door. “But wait Jeremy! Who’s going to drive us?” I looked back at her. “I’ll be right back, I’m going to get Joe” 14
“Wait Jeremy!!! Who is Joe?” 15
I ignored her calls to me, and went back inside. Where I found our butler so to say. Joe. “Hey, Joe. Can you drive us up to the Mall and pick us up in about two hours?” Joe was sitting in a chair, reading a book called ‘How well do you know yourself, and how well does yourself know you.’ One of those dumb, pointless and really complicated books to understand. 16
He looks up from his book to look at me. “Yeah, sure Jeremy.” Joe was one of those nice guys, though he was really inconsiderate about my condition. He never paid attention to me much. Though when he did he was really nice. 17
He slowly puts his book down and walked to me. “lets go if were going”. He opened the door as I went out. Roxy’s face was gentle in the silent winter breeze.18
“Hey, Jeremy!” She waved by the small yellow car. It was a mustang. It had to be a couple thousand dollars. I don’t remember. When I bought it, or more like when my father bought it for me, I drove in it all the time. Anyway price has never really been any problems for me. But now, I can’t drive it at all. I hoped into the car and sat quietly. Roxy dashed to the other side of the car. Though when she opened the door I noted she wasn’t wearing a coat. Winter in new York and she wasn’t wearing a coat? Was she going mad?19
“Roxy, where is your coat?” 20
“Oh, I don’t have one…”21
She jumped in and then closed the door.22
“Roxy, your going to catch a cold!” I peeled my coat off my arms and handed it to her.23
“No, I can’t…then you’ll be cold. I’ll be fin-”24
Anger flashed in my eyes for a moment as I dropped my coat in her lap.25
“I’m not going to let you freeze Roxy, put the coat on.” 26
As if being commanded by a tyrant she did as she was told and slipped the jacket onto herself. 27
“Thanks” Roxy replied28
I merely nodded at her. I heard the cars trunk slam as Joe put my wheel chair in the trunk. Soon he opened his door and before we knew it, we were at the mall.29
Though, cold, I wheeled around the mall with Roxy while she wore my coat. She had to stop by every store and gaze into the windows. She acted like she had never been to a mall before. Heck, maybe she hasn’t I don’t know. And I don’t think that I’m going to ask either. 30
“We have bought so far, ten different outfits, all with there own pair of shoes and accessories. Seven different shirts, bought separately. Some new jeans, and most importantly a new coat.” I said31
I smiled at her and she returned it. She then took off my coat and handed it to me. Then she put on her new one. 32
Though, while she was putting on her new jacket, I was putting on my coat. Glad to know there was such a thing as warmth and that it had finally come. 33
The coat that Roxy was wearing was black, very soft material. The inside was filled with some sort of white fur. And the silver zipper at the top of the jacket was in the shape of a heart. 34
“You look great Roxy.” 35
Her face turned bright red. “I do not, your just saying that to make me happy.” I smiled at her. It amuses me that still in New York’s dead winter I can still make her face bright red. “Why would I lie to make you happy, when I could tell you the truth to make you happier?” 36
That’s when he face go really red I remember. “Ok! No more shopping, I’ve spent enough of your money.”37
Roxy carried the bags of her things that I had bought for her as I wheeled beside her. 38
“Roxy, you haven’t spent like any of my money” 39
“Do what? I come from a poor place! All of this is a fortune!” 40
“It was not a fortune; a fortune is what I have on my other fifteen cards.” 41
“how much did you pay from my coat?” 42
“About $250” 43
“WHAT?!” 44
“Yes, any problems?” 45
“I-”46
She stopped in her speech to look off to somewhere else. In awe her mouth hanged open. I stopped and tried to follow her eyes. But I could not see what she saw. She ran off, only to enter a store. The name of the store was called Diamonds Galore. Ah, I wonder what she had seen. 47
I quickly wheeled inside to see Roxy pressed up against a glass box near many others. Her eyes were wide. 48
“What is it Roxy?” She did not reply.49
I moved around to see a diamond necklace, with a silver chain. The diamond was in the shape of a beautiful heart. It caught what light there was in the dim store. Out of all the diamonds it seemed, this one outshined them all. $1,000,000 custom cut, 100% diamond silver chain included. It was amazing. 50
“Do you want it?”51
“w-what?” 52
“I said, do you want it?” 53
Her blue eyes widened in disbelief. If it was possible for her eyes to get any wider that is.54
I like buying people stuff, thought it is very materialistic, and just you know stuff . It made people happy, and I someone bought it for you, you would never forget them now would you? I don’t want Roxy to forget me. I don’t know why I’m being so kind. Maybe because I haven’t really had a friend for a long time. even when I was going out with Rachel, no one was my friend. Just her. She was my everything but now she’s gone. 55
“What?!” She said in a more sharper tone, though not really loud. Soon after her tone issues, an employee came to us.56
“Can I help you?” The man aiding me looked very confused. though I can’t blame him, many people and stores ask how I could buy such things when I was only sixteen. It’s not that I dress like my dads a billionaire you know? 57
“Yes sir, I was wondering if I could buy this.” I pointed to the glass case containing the necklace in it. The mans stunned face matched almost completely with Roxy’s. Though Roxy’s was more surprise then his. 58
Roxy then started to murmur. “J-J…” The mad nodded probably thinking that we were playing a joke on him or something. But as a good employee he went to go get the key for the case. I pulled out my debit card as he walked away from us. I looked at Roxy, who still held her gaze towards me. 59
“Jeremy! I’ve known you for about two days now, why did you do that? I-”60
“I did it because you wanted it right? You’re my friend. My first one in at least three years. Your actually nice, and you care about me. and you know what? I care about you too.” 61
Roxy still held strong with her glare towards me as the man came back and unlocked the case. He slowly took the diamond out of the place and placed it into my hands. Then with the other hand I gave him my card, and he left once again. 62
Let me tell you, that was one heavy rock. “Roxy?” I looked at her softly. All surprised looks on her face were gone, replaced with the awe of a giant diamond in my hands. 63
“Could you bend down for a second and move your hair?” She moved her hair to one side and bent down next to me so that I could reach her neck. Her face didn’t look at me, only into the rock that I was latching around her neck. 64
The chain clicked and I let my hands go. There the necklace hang on Roxy’s neck. Her face was close to mine, then she bent down further, and her lips touched my cheek. Only for a moment though, but it seemed like forever her lips were lingering on my cheek. 65
Then she stood back up and smiled at me. I don’t know what to think, or what to do. Why did she do that? All I could do in complete and total silence was take my debit card, walk out the door, and back into the car. 66
why did she kiss my cheek? Why did I let her. My mind pulled in so many different directions, I couldn’t stand it. The whole time in the car we were silent. Though she was silent she fiddled with the necklace in her hands the whole ride. 67
Lunch was when we finally broke the silence. Eating our sandwiches sitting together on the floor In the living room. “I’m sorry that I-” I cut her off. “It’s ok really.” she continued to fiddle with the necklace for another moment. “I shouldn’t have. I just couldn’t think of any other way to thank you for it,” She put her head down. “Roxy, it’s fine. Do you like that necklace?” Her face was blushing red. “Of course who wouldn’t like it?” Well, I could think of a few... “my dad wouldn’t like it. I mean, I don’t think he’s into that stuff.” 68
She smiled at me. “So Jeremy,” I looked at her. “Yeah?” she put her hands down away from the necklace to take a moment and she looked up. “Do you have any paint here?” why would she need paint? “Yeah, I have a whole art room down the hall, there should be plenty of paint in there.” 69
She merely nodded and stood up. “Where are you going?” She didn’t reply and just ran down the hallway. Curious, maybe I should follow her? No, that would be wrong. I trust her don’t I? Yeah. I wonder if I went to far buying her the necklace. I mean usually that’s something a boyfriend does for a girlfriend. I do love her though, as a friend. I don’t want to give her the wrong idea. I don’t want to be with her, I just love her as a friend. 70
I think it will be a really long time before I even consider a girlfriend again. I miss Rachel so much. Ah, but do I really want to be a mnemophobic jerk right now and start crying again because I’m thinking about Rachel? I don’t think that it would be fair to Roxy. I don’t think she should have to put up like me like she did last night. Though I really appreciate it now, even though last night I didn’t know what to think. Anyway…I’m not going to cry cause I’m thinking of her. I’ll just be depressed. I take a long sigh.71
“Roxy!” I called out to her. I wonder what she’s doing in there. After a moments pause I hear her “Yes?” Thank god she answered I didn’t think that she would. “I’m coming!” I wheeled my way down the hallway to the room next to mine. I opened the door quietly, and as I wheeled my way in I see her with paint, and she’s trying to paint something on a sheet of paper she has on the floor. 72
“What are you painting?” 73
The whole room smelled like paint. you know, sometimes its fine and other times its just a really disgusting smell. Well this time. its just plain revolting. I moved my wheel Chair along to see what she was painting.74
And when I had a clear view, I was staring right back at myself. Me…she had painted me. 75
Why would she want to paint me? ME76
