Everyone gets stressed out in life. It is your body's way of telling you to slow down and relax. But relaxing can be hard, so this guide is to give you a few simple tips in how to deal with a stressful situation.8

1) Take a few deep breathes. breathe in, pause, breathe out. You may want to close your eyes while you do this, or put your hands over your ears to block out sights and sounds. Do this several times.9

2) Find a safety spot. Create a mental immage of a spot where you feel completly safe. This may be a room or someone's house or a vacation spot, or somewhere you invent. When you feel stressed go to that safety spot in your mind, and combine step one and two.10

3) Remove yourself from the situation. If a situation is getting too stressful for you step away from the situation until you have had a chance to calm down. While you are away try steps one and two.11

4) Focus on one thing at a time. Prioritize the tasks before you and break it down into steps. Ex. 1, turn on computer, 2 open Word, 3, write opening paragraph, 4, write body, 5, write conclusion, and before you know it your essay is written.12

5) find a smooth stone to keep in your pocket, or a stress ball, and rub or squeze it slowly twenty times. Combine this with step one and/or two.13

6) Start using a journal. Write down your thoughts and feelings in a journal. If you can not do this at the moment you are feeling stressed than do so later.14

7) Remember that everyone gets overwhelmed.15

8) avoid situations you know are going to stress you out.16

9) Get a good nights sleep, tirdness can raise anxiety levels.17

10) recognise when you are starting to feel stressed and use the tecniques early before the stress escalates to unbearable levels.18

If none of these tecniques work for you you may want to consider talking to your doctor about getting an anti-anxiety medication.

    Elvenfairy ,

    Ok...so...
    1) Breathing is a big thing for me, i've done it over and over and sometimes it works , sometimes it doesn't.

2)I have many safety spots...recommended by a therapist. Too many safety spots...they just don't work for me.

3)Removing from a bad situation definitely works for me.

4)Focusing is hard for me, because of med, but i try.

5)I'll have to check out the stone thing...never done it

6)Have written in a journal for over ten years...and it works..sometimes

7)I try to remember that i am only one person in a big world, but i am pretty selfish

8)I wish i could avoid these situations, but i work in one. My family is one. Can't avoid those.

9)I sleep well enough..now..didn't use to. And yes, it does help

    10) I am beginning to recognise many things about anxiety and am working to prevent it.

These are all wonderful suggestions...that i've heard of but not really tried each. I will consider those i didn't bother with! Thanks again, this is wonderful and helpful. You are a finalist.
