Taming the fire (chapter 13)

Chapter 13:1

Maxwell stood by the window, with his hands in his pockets pondering over the job offer Kim had informed him about when she dropped by a few days ago. Once again, he was wondering how he had gotten here. He shouldn’t have to ‘ponder’ this was his dream job!2

This was obviously Amy’s fault, with her stupid attention-seeking back-talks and her whorish outfits. She drove him insane. He knew there was absolutely no chance of meeting any other woman who got him as worked up as Amy did. 3

So what the hell was he doing there?4

The annoying red-haired drove him so crazy that he was pretty sure he would never feel for another woman the way he felt for her. He couldn’t just let her go. Going after her was definitely worth a shot. If he didn’t he’d only feel regret wondering what could have been.5

He grabbed his car keys from the table with out knowing where to start. He found himself driving to Olivia’s house since that was only home address Amy had given him. She was so reluctant to give him hers.6

He knocked on the door and the petite brunette emerged with her boy-friends arms wrapped around her waist.7

“Mr Maxwell?” Her brows furrowed in puzzlement .8

“You must be Olivia… am I right?” She nodded. “I’m looking for Miss Palmers. I um I -uh really need to get back to her on this essay project we’re working on. Its really important, do you know where I can find her?”9

With out a word, Olivia turned to her boy-friend and said, “Hey babe? Could you go check if my brother’s done fixing the heater yet? Mom will be here soon and I don’t want her freaking out.”10

“Sure.” He said giving her a quick kiss and leaving.11

Olivia turned back to Maxwell solemnly. He lowered his and half sighed-half smirked.12

“You know don’t you?”13

She nodded. “It not that hard to see, I’ve known Amy for six years. Read her like a book.”14

“I wish it was that easy for me. The girl seriously drives me nuts.”15

“She said the same thing about you… And oh my gosh why are you looking for her when she was coming to find you!”16

“What?” 17

“Okay you know what?” Olivia sighed. “She probably reached there by now and knowing Amy, she’ll probably freak out that you’re not there, get angry and then go home. So just go to her house!”18

“I don’t have her address!”19

“Number five third street and Slate avenue… not too far from here.”20

“Thanks!” Maxwell said turning on his heels before he heard her call his name again.21

“Yeah?” He answered.22

“No one knows but Chris and I, and we intend to keep it that way until Amy turns eighteen. You can trust us.”23

“Thanks.” He muttered softly with a brief smile before heading back to his car.24

He reached her house in six minutes. He knocked preparing himself to steal her into his arms the minute she walked out the door. The door knob turned and he felt his heart rate quicken. Holy fuck. He was in love with her.25

The door opened to reveal a man to Maxwell’s disappointment. He was a scruffy looking man with tired sullen eyes, an unkempt beard with lean muscular arms hanging out of his rough looking clothes.26

“Um.” Maxwell cleared his throat uncertainly. “Is Amy in?”27

“Who the heck are you?” He voice was deep and ragged, and his mouth emitted a foul stench of liquor.28

“I’m… her teacher.” Maxwell eyed him suspiciously. He didn’t like what he saw. He hated coming to terms with the fact that his Amy lived with a man like this.29

“Are you her brother, friend…”30

“I’m the bitch’s uncle.”31

“Excuse me?” Maxwell felt his fist clenching at his sight. Even though he might have called her that a couple of times in his head earlier. He loathed the way he heard from the mouth of this brute.32

“She used to be such a nice little girl.” The drunken man continued as if he hadn’t heard a word he had said. “Gave her uncle everything he wanted. Well it’s not like she could anything about it.” He winked and smiled as if he expected the disgusted and furious teacher to agree with him. “But she don’t do that no more, she’s barely ever here.”33

“Besides the chick can pack up one heck of a punch now”34

But that ain’t gonna be a problem. She just got me unprepared is all. A couple of ropes and a gag and I’ll be riding her like a horse.. You know what I’m sayin-”35

Adam felt himself being blinded by white hot fury and he felt his fist slam into the face of the intoxicated man who fell backwards against the hard ground.36

As Adam slowly regained his senses. He stared down at the drunken body before him in disgust. It took all the determination he could muster not to slam his foot against his unconscious face and step on it until it was in a bloody unrecognizable state.37

Adam staggered back into his car but couldn’t bring himself to start the engine. Is this was she’d had to go through? All this while he’d given her a hard time for being so stubborn and cold when all along she was trying to be strong. He felt like shit. 38

He knew what he had to do keep that bastard away from her. To keep her to himself where she belonged. To tame that raging fire that had been burning in her for ages.39

He started the engine and headed home, as an undeniable feeling in his gut told him that she was still there.40

He arrived at his home and he wasn’t disappointed. She was standing right there… standing head to head with Kim. Both their arms crossed and looks on their faces that made one think they were going murder each other.41
