Chapter 32

Like A Walk in the Park 3

Except a Carnivorous Dragon is in the Way
4

Toplain rose from his sheepskin grass bed. He sighed. Toplain considered just walking around his home, but thought of instead going on a nice long walk through Gontin Forest. 5

His paws softly padded against the tree floor as he trotted over and down the steps. One of the younger wolves who helped in the Paladon-the name of Toplain’s home-and served Toplain for a wagerable amount stood at the bottom of the stairs on the ground floor looking up at his Master. He bowed his head slightly as Toplain stepped onto the growing green grass that was the floor and gave a little bow in return. 6

“Where are you going, My Liege?” the young wolf asked as his head followed Toplain. He was at the door and turned his head back to the young dark brown wolf with the grey diamond on his back. “I am going for a long walk, Nabire. I will be back in a while. Do not fret if I am not. Sometimes things don’t take just a little while. If I was gone for days then you should worry,” Toplain replied. His voice did not crackle, but it was soft and deep. It did sound aging, though-but not enough to make him sound as old as he was. But then, no one knew how old he was.  7

Toplain then placed both paws on the strangely hinged door and pushed it open. “See you later,” he said, turning his head back to Nabire. “You can tell the rest to take the day off-you too.” Toplain set his head straight again and trotted out the door into the sunlight. 8

~~~~~~~~9
It was a small distance to the forest, but Toplain was close enough. He was just a ways away when he heard a loud roar. Now, one end of the path was facing towards the Paladon making it easy to go for simple walks. But the roar did not sound like that of a forest creature. 10
Toplain took off at high speed into the forest following the path as usual. He decided that it wouldn’t be the smartest thing to follow this wide open path if it was a massive creature he was dealing with. Toplain dodged some branches jumping into the bushes and slid through the trees. 11
As he quietly skidded unknowingly on the opposite side of the path as Merrihcik, Toplain peered through bushes. As he saw the dragon, he raised what seemed to be an eyebrow if he didn’t have a bunch of fur.12
A boring day…I suppose it’ll just fly off and my day will be even more uneventful, he thought. Not a good thing to go looking for trouble, though- especially when there’s a dragon involved. 13
Toplain silently watched as the blue and silver dragon bent down, narrowing its eyes as it bent. What was it looking for…?14
~~~~~~~~15

Merrihcik crouched low and edged back. He watched the bright dragon bend over, probably smelling him. The wolf tried to lay as low as possible, avoiding the dragon’s eyes and nose as he crept back into the darkness. 16

“I smell you, little wolfie…” the dragon said softly. From the sound of the voice, it seemed as if it was a female dragon. It was slightly raspy, but the tone was soft-for now. It was generally deep because she was a dragon of course, but being female it wasn’t as low as it could’ve been. 17

It turned out that she was a glistening silver-sapphire dragon, and when she moved, her sapphire color sparkled to silver all over as Merrihcik observed. She had glowing silver (and slitted pupils of which were sapphire blue) eyes…She was rather large, with long, sharp, black claws. In a way, she was beautiful. Seemingly evil in a way, but beautiful. When she breathed fire, it was a blue flame with silver edges. She snorted silver smoke.18

It was useless to Merrihcik to hide. The dragon would find him anyways, so he edged over away from the dragon and slowly crept upwards into a standing position. When the dragon looked his way, Merrihcik was clearly visible to her. 19

“So, little wolfie…I see you have tried to be brave,” the dragon said. She dropped her soft tone and apparently this was her real voice. It was of course deep, but it had a permanent growling sound. 20

Merrihcik growled and bared his teeth. He decided to make a formal introduction, seeing as it was never good to charge into barking at a dragon. “I am Merrihcik Comalhi Tidanska. I come from this forest, the Wood of Gontin.Why have you suddenly decided to prey upon me, and what is your name?” he asked. 21

The female dragon snorted her silver smoke and replied, “My name? What would you do with my name? But seeing as I could always eat you I shall tell you. My name is Nalatu Jukanma Isenjo; but they call me Nala. I am from the Mountain of Kilwumma. As for ‘preying upon you…’ I am a dragon and I eat. I spotted you and heard you from above-a tasty snack for a traveler of the Skies.” 22

The dragon called Nala paused to let the information sink in.23

Merrihcik blinked. “Nalatu? You come all the way from Kilwumma? That is a far ways away, or so I’ve heard,” he said.24

Toplain watched from his bushes. What a fool to step out unto the path of a dragon, the old wolf thought. It would have been safer to run into the woods! This dragon would not be able to chase after easily. Toplain shook his head slowly side to side. 25

The dragons of Kilwumma were powerful. From the looks of Nala, she was of a rarer breed. Kilwumma held the rarest dragons and ruled over the other dragon filled mountains. It was rumored that vampires lived in the Ruling Mountain. And of course the head council of dragons lived at Kilwumma-a dragon from every breed in the mountains that Kilwumma ruled over. Past their vast regions they did not rule over the other dragons.26

It looked almost as if Nala was among the council. The council was made up of the most powerful and intelligent dragons of each tribe.27

Merrihcik’s ears twitched as he loosened his body. On the other side of the path…”Who’s there!?” the young wolf suddenly barked out.28

Toplain started at the bark, and so did Nala.29

The dragon looked over in the direction Merrihcik was now facing. Merrihcik growled-they were towards the right side of the path.30

Nala was wary of both sides. She didn’t want to have been tricked so that the wolf could get away, but curiosity edged into her about what was on the edge of the path. 31

Toplain edged back. He had been louder than he should’ve been. Toplain was generally a quiet wolf, but in the rush of running to figure out a cause he had forgotten to be stealthy although it came naturally to him. 32

Nala took a giant step forward, immediately in front of the bush Toplain was hiding by. A low growl emitted from the dragon’s throat.33

She leaned over the bushes peering down upon a crouching brown ball of fur and two glowing orbs glancing upwards.34

Another thought about dragon’s suddenly crossed Toplain’s mind; Feed a dragon, gain a fiend. An odd thought to use, but Toplain trusted his instincts. He rolled through the bushes past Nala into the path near Merrihcik. 35

The dragons gaze followed the rolling ball of wolf and watched Toplain as he stood in one swift movement after rolling. 36

“So!” Nala roared out as she turned to face Toplain and Merrihcik. “A spy? A mere wolf dares to spy on a dragon!”37

Toplain breathed slowly and calmly in spite of being confronted in face by a dragon-a large one at that. “I mean thy no harm…”38
