The Denaya was a big cave out in the sticks by the railroad tracks, famous for its beautiful wildlife, peaceful scenery.. and of course its humongous drunken parties. People went there to get hammered, get laid, get high, or just sit around and laugh at people making fools of themselves doing any or all of the above. When Alex and Savannah pulled up, there were at least 50 people there, most from their school, others just lurkers that Savannah had never seen before, probably over the age of 30. They made her nervous. Savannah spotted her friend Katy and left Alex for a minute to to talk to her.1
"Hey Kat, what's goin' on?" Savannah asked as she hugged her friend.2
"Not much, 'most everyone worth seein' ain't even here yet," Katy said.3
"I noticed." Savannah felt a tap on her shoulder and whirled around to face Danny Mason. Cute. Nice. Smart. Her ex.4
"Hey Savvy," Danny said. "I have a question."5
"Yeah?" She could tell what was coming.6
"How bout goin' out with me sometime? Again, I mean."7
"Umm, Danny, I don't think so. I have a boyfriend."8
"Who loves her," Alex said as he came up and slipped his arms around Savannah's waist. "God," Savannah thought, "he smells like beer."9
Danny caught the look of distaste on her face and there was a twinkle in his eye and smirk on his lips as he said, "OK Savvy, talk to you later." As he walked away, though, it was hard to hide his disappointment.10
Going against her better judgement, Savannah joined Alex in getting totally wasted. By 2 am, most people had left or passed out, so she went to find Alex. She needed to get home. She looked around and finally decided to go check the truck. As she stepped closer, she saw two forms sitting in the front seat. 11
"Ugh, I hope one of them's Alex," Savannah said. She immediately regretted the words. She wished it was anyone, anyone but Alex, because the person sitting beside him was Katy, and she was kissing him. Or he was kissing her. Savannah didn't want to know which. She ran up to the driver's side and started frantically pounding on the window. She heard Alex say, "Fuck!" as he opened the door.12
"Baby, I can explain," he quickly said.13
"Like hell you can!! I know perfectly well what I saw and it needs no God damn explanation!" Savannah shouted.14
"Come on Savvy, it just happened," said Katy.15
"Don't even try using those lines on me, I am NOT STUPID!" Savannah screamed. Suddenly her voice got quiet. "I thought you were my best friend Kat...I thought, you know, that I could trust you...oh my God," Savannah said with a cracked voice before she buried her face in her hands.16
"I am your best fr..." Katy's voice trailed off and she hung her head. Yes, she knew exactly what she was doing, liked it, and had expected to get away with it too. Now she had to pay for it.17
Savannah turned to Alex. "Alex, I'm not going to waste anymore of your time, God knows you've wasted enough of mine. I'm through with both of you." She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes, but held them back. No, she wasn't going to let them see her cry. Not ever. That meant defeat. She was stronger than that. She held her head high and looked Alex straight in the face. "We're over."18
Suddenly Alex's anger boiled over. He grabbed her by the shoulders and slammed her against the truck. "We are NOT OVER!!! Dammit Savvy, if I can't have you, I'll be damned if anyone else will! You can count on me to see to that!" 19
"LET..ME..GO!!," Savannah yelled. Savannah felt his body lurch and his fist on her face. She stumbled and fell, hit her head on the side of the truck, and blacked out.20
