Alice

I look out into the endless smudge of churning blackness, just wishing I could jump into the water and be lost forever. It's dreamy weather we're on. And I know that you can see me, if I cannot see you. You wave your crooked wand, sending your magic into this world. Along an icy pond, with a frozen moon, I sit and wait. Looking in the watery sky, a murder of silhouette crows I saw flew in front of the moon. And the tears on my face refuse to dry. Leaving wet stains down my cheeks. And the skates on the pond, they spell Alice. 1

Looking at it, I disappear in your name. You're gone, but you must wait for me. I will come for you somewhere across the sea where there's a wreck of a ship. And when I close my eyes, I see you. Your hair is like meadow grass on the tide. I focus on anything, to keep my mind off you. And the raindrops on my window, and the ice in my drink cannot keep my mind from wandering. Baby, all that I can think of is Alice.2

Arithmetic, Arithmetock. I want to go back to when I could see and touch you. I turn the hands back on the clock. And you were lost out there. How does the ocean rock the boat? I will never see you again. You are gone, and I remain. How did the razor find my throat? I want to come and find you. Out in that eternal ocean. the only strings that hold me here are tangled up around the pier where I stand. 3

I see your face now, faint in my memory. And so a secret kiss, your shimmering lips on mine, brings madness with the bliss. And then you are gone. And I will think of this when I'm dead in my grave. And I want to go out into the ocean, but I can only glide over the frozen pond. Set me adrift and I'm lost over there. I put on the bladed shoes, And I must be insane to go skating on your name. The letters scratched into the solid surface of the pond. And by tracing it twice, I made your name thicker. I fell through the ice of Alice.4

finally free, I realize, There's only Alice.

Author notes

okay, so this short mini write was majorly inspired by a song. I used all the lyrics in the song, in order, I just added a few things in between. This song, quite literally, changed me. I very strongly recomend that you listen to it.
Alice, by Tom Waits.

It's dreamy weather we're on
You wave your crooked wand
Along an icy pond
With a frozen moon
A murder of silhouette crows I saw
And the tears on my face
And the skates on the pond
They spell Alice-
I'll disappear in your name
But you must wait for me
Somewhere across the sea
There's a wreck of a ship
Your hair is like meadow grass
On the tide
And the raindrops on my window
And the ice in my drink
Baby, all that I can think of
Is Alice-
Arithmetic, Arithmetock
I turn the hands back on the clock
How does the ocean rock the boat
How did the razor find my throat
The only strings that hold me here
Are tangled up around the pier-
And so a secret kiss
Brings madness with the bliss
And I will think of this
When I'm dead in my grave
Set me adrift and I'm lost over there
And I must be insane
To go skating on your name
And by tracing it twice
I fell through the ice
Of Alice
There's only Alice
