Part 3 Chapter 15 Portland Noir Instructions to Managers

Portland Noir Instructions to Managers11

Paranoid Park Filmed in Portland22

March 26, 200833

This past weekend saw the Portland release of Paranoid Park, a new film written and directed by local treasure Gus Van Sant. To many Portland cinephiles, a new Gus Van Sant film, especially one shot almost entirely in Portland, is nothing short of an event. Over the years, we have come to expect a certain grit and anonymity from a Van Sant vehicle (sans mainstream ventures like Finding Forrester, Good Will Hunting, etc), as if no matter where he films, he feels he has to single-handedly bear the cross of Portland’s art-damaged counter-culture, or at least the stereotypes associated with it. His last couple films, Elephant and Last Days, explored the social mythology behind recent “world-shaking” Gen-X/Gen Y events: Columbine and the suicide of Kurt Cobain. It was almost as if these were films he had to make, events he had to comment on through his art. They were his obsessions. The result of these projects were two beautiful and beautifully detached films. With Paranoid Park, we find an older, perhaps wiser, and certainly more contemplative creator. Without compromising any of his signature grit, Gus Van Sant has crafted a deceptively simple, fully-realized art film that doesn’t have to comment on anything or protect itself through its own conceits. It is free to just be itself. Which, not suprisingly, makes it more of a Portland film than any other I can think of.44

Paranoid Park tracks the physical and inner turmoil of a teenage skateboarder (Gabe Nevins) following a tragic event, which turns his world upside down. It is showing exclusively at Cinema 21 (616 NW 21st), an independent art-house theater in Portland’s Nob Hill neighborhood. Through March 27, the showtimes are 7:00 and 8:55 pm; and from March 28 through April 3 it shows nightly at 7:45 and 9:25 (plus Saturday and Sunday at 12:15, 2:00).55

[edit] Plot88

Alex (Gabe Nevins), a 16 year old skateboarder, rides a freight train clandestinely, together with a man named Scratch (Scott Patrick Green) whom he has just met at the Eastside Skate Park, known to the local skateboard community as "Paranoid Park". While the train is moving a security guard working at the rail yard notices the pair, chases after them, and tries to get them off by repeatedly hitting Alex with his flashlight. In the affray, Alex hits him with his skateboard and the guard falls onto another track into the path of a second, oncoming, freight train which cuts him in half.99

Alex tries to destroy some of the evidence: he throws his skateboard into the Willamette River from the Steel Bridge, and when he arrives at his friend Jared's house he disposes of the clothes he had been wearing.1010

Some time later, while Alex is attending school, he and several other students who skateboard are called to the school office. There they are questioned by a police officer named Detective Liu. It is revealed that the police have recovered Alex's skateboard, though they have not traced it back to him, and have identified DNA evidence which places the skateboard at the scene of the security guard's death.1111

Throughout the film Alex keeps the incident to himself, and does not confide in anyone else. However, one of his friends, Macy, notices that he is worried about something. She advises him to write down whatever it is that's bothering him, for a cathartic release if nothing else. He is initially opposed to the idea, but eventually writes an account around which the story and its narration are based. After completing the written account, Alex burns it.1212

So what are we about in this film called Portland Noir? Its location is set in Portland Oregon, but it could be Portland Maine or Portland England or Portland Switzerland or Portland Italy. Portland is a metaphor for entry into life at the port of things and continuation into the land of things. {In this case, the Abbey in Mt. Angel, Oregon.}2323

It is you who have to "condense fact from the vapor of nuance." (Snow Crash, p. 60) Nuance is the vapor at the port; fact is the condensation on the land. If your meeting of Our Hiro and Yours Truly -- that is, an act of discovery for them both. Where he is "an oldster" (p. 121) and she is fifteen dressed to kill (p. 93, 101), you have to port or nuance the vapor to make it condense into fact or to land with the rain or the shine. {European location: Abbey in Engelberg, Switzerland, similar.}2424

We have selected Willa Cather dialogue between the Caucasian and the CastAway. It is a means of contrasting the fears of Our Hiro of becoming an uniformity and his non-conformity. 2525

He must be man from Mars. She must be woman from Venus. She fears loss of virginity when not of own free will and choice (hence the dentata or protective gear) and her mobility (her plank) and her attachments to him (pooning as in harpooning). {Y.T: Infocalyse.}2626

He is going to be her free ride to power and notice (hence, the powerful auto and the swords). He is the hacker and swordsman (in his mind of the Metaverse). {Read his business card: Hiro Protagonist.}2727

She changes from the kourier (doing other's messages) into her mother's image (a dress). 2828

{Cather's veiled dressmaker.} {brown hands}2929

But what or who is she really? Is she the modern Varoom girl?3030

Opening the film with Our Hiro's nostalgia for better times is a Cather theme, desiring something you could have had in the past is the best you will ever get. "You really are a part of me." (My Antonia, p. 276)3131

"I felt rather than saw her smile." "'…you're here.'" (p. 278) "I could almost believe that a boy and girl ran along beside me, as our shadows used to do, laughing and whispering to each other in the grass."3232

As for me and my style, I like to mix it up a bit...blend if you will... the Abercrombie look with a side of punk... new pics will be up soon. 4040

I am currently working as a Personal Trainer at 24Hr Fitness and as a Brand Rep at Abercrombie & Fitch. So I keep myself in excellent shape year round. I've always been a very athletic individual, keeping myself busy with football, snowboading, wakeboarding and when given the opportunity surfing. 4141

I have been modeling off and on for about a year, and have had the opportunity to do some promotional work for, The Bon Marche & Redkins...and work with a few photographers from around the north west. 4242

I am currently looking for paid shoots...but, would be up for work on a TFP basis...depending on the location and type of work. 4343

I am available for travel...but, with expenses paid *, and I'm up to travel to just about anywhere... All I ask is that you please give me a minimum of 2-3 weeks in advance...but, I can travel on short notice "if" needed...and depending on the type of work. 4444

*can negotiate...depends on location and type of work. 4545

I'm always up for trying new things, like new styles on clothes or unique locations for shoots.... If you have any ideas that you would like to talk to me about, feel free to get in touch with me anytime and we'll see what we can put together. 4646

I would just like to take the opportunity to say thank you for taking the time to read through this and look over my page. I look forward to hearing from you all.4747

Couch Park is not far from Our Hiro's office in downtown Portland. He goes to a clandestine meeting there, on his way to Powell's Books. He runs into trouble with a gang and fights his way out of it with the help of another skateboarder. She is dressed like him. Both are in togs with hats to the side. They asked themselves if they hit or missed the bully.5252

She goes to a McDonald's to change into her dress costume for home.5353

She is pristine, untouched, a beauty with hat, veil and gloves, heels. Yours Truly is everyman's everywoman, a vision of lovliness, but hard.5454

His heart is touched by the change in this fifteen-year-old girl. He is older, a young man, not balding, athletic, gym-trained, ambitious.5555

So begins this sequel to Paranoid Park: Portland Noir: She could not look herself in the mirror. Here is Scout from To Kill a Mocking Bird passing from puberty and adolescence into young womanhood: Peaches and cream complexion, southern drawling words and accent.5656

Somewhere between Brigid in The Maltese Falcon, and Patsy Kelly.5757

Our Hiro is the young detective from whom Sam Spade evolves. Tough, hard, not-boyish, more big brother to little sister, not yet a smoker or hard drinker. We see young Dashiell Hammett and Lillian Hellman. It is before their downward demise in death and drink. We see how he cuts away every extra word in the dialogue; how she learns from his cuts.5858

If there ever was a morality play, this sequel achieves the dilemma of how the Garden of Eden became Paranoid Park where love is lost. It is a lost paradise because she was tempted by evil and he was redeemed by good; he chooses to give her up to the police; she chooses to stay jailed. She could not look herself in the mirror for what she saw there.5959

Burnside Skatepark is a skatepark located in Portland, Oregon, United States. Located under the east end of the Burnside Bridge, the skatepark was originally built by the skating community without permission and eventually the city approved the area as a public skatepark.[1] The skatepark was also featured in videogames such as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Grind Session, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3.[2] Burnside was also featured in the 2007 film Paranoid Park, as a setting for the eponymous skate park.6060

- Scout, what in the world has got into you? - I'm not going back. - Now, now. Atticus, I'm not going back to school anymore. Now, Scout, it's just the first day. I don't care. Everything went wrong. The teacher got mad as the devil at me... and said you were teaching me to read all wrong and to stop it, then acted like a fool and tried to give Walter Cunningham a quarter... when everybody knows Cunninghams won't take nothin' from nobody. Any fool could have told her that. Well... maybe she's just nervous. After all, it's her first day teaching school and being new here. - Oh, Atticus... - Now, wait a minute. If you learn this single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person... until you consider things from his point of view. Sir? Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it. But if I keep going to school, we can't ever read anymore. Scout... do you know what a compromise is? Bending the law? Uh... no. It's an agreement reached by mutual consent. Now... here's the way it works. You concede the necessity of going to school, we'll keep right on reading the same every night... just as we always have. That a bargain? There just didn't seem to be... anyone or anything Atticus couldn't explain. Though it wasn't a talent that would arouse the admiration of any of our friends, Jem and I had to admit he was very good at that. - But that was all he was good at... we thought. 6161

The Noir Trilogy is an unlikely To kill a mockingbird, Paranoid Park and The Maltese Falcon. Here is the child-narrator Scout growing up to the skateboard girl to the femme fatalle. Yours Truly is the fifteen-year-old girl between Scout and Brigid. What happened to her? This parody of Snow Crash seeks to cast Scout-Brigid as she changes girl-woman.6262

Changing her dress from overalls to blouse-dress in a McDonald's rest room, hiding her dress change in the ceiling. We like to think the changeling child is in her mind and body as well. When does she find that her body, her image, her sex can affect boys and then men?6363

Making the boy-man a 22 year-old skateboarder makes a seven year difference between the girl-woman of 15 years old. He is an oldster.6464

When did they both resonant two strings moving as one? Can she look herself in the mirror after each encounter? Is deceit habitual?6565
