Zac stood on the flat outside his window watching Leena climb up the tree so easily. She landed next to him and waited for the next instructions.1
“How do you do that?” Zac asked.2
“I think it’s this whole thing with everything,” Leena replied, “What’s next?” 3
“You stay out here and don’t come in ok, no matter what is that clear?” he asked sternly.4
Leena nodded.5
Zac opened his window and crawled inside, leaving the window so that he could make a quick escape. He looked around his room, wondering what to grab. He went under his bed and grabbed the packed duffel bag under his bed, he was always prepared to runaway, he just needed the courage. He paused for a second. It was extremely quiet, almost too quiet, he listened for the television downstairs, but heard nothing. That was extremely strange.6
He turned around and looked for one of his notebooks filled with the farm he drew when he was ten. He held the notebook in his hands.7
Suddenly there was a thug on the door.8
“Open up!” Tyler yelled from the other side of the door.9
Zac started to panic, never had his father tried to come into his room. Zac scrambled to the window, “Remember no matter what happens don’t come in.” he reminded Leena. Her eyes were worried she obviously heard his father.10
Just then there was another thug, “I’m giving ya this the count of three to open this door, or I’m busting it open. Zac closed his eyes and counted silently to himself, one, two, three. The door burst open. Zac opened his eyes and saw his drunk father stumble into his room.11
Zac stood as stiff as a solider ready to take anything his father did to him, he now didn’t really care at this moment.12
“Where have you’ve been son?” Tyler asked, sauntering over to his son.13
Zac stood still. Tyler grabbed Zac by the Zac. Zac tensed, don’t make a sound Leena, he prayed. He could just sense Leena at the edge of the window seeing this happen.14
“I asked you a question, what are you suppose to do when I ask you a question?” Tyler breathed his thick liquoir breath in Zac’s face.15
Zac waited so long to say this, “Ignore it for you are wrong,” Zac said calmly.16
“What did you say boy?” Tyler asked, his glazed over eyes turning red.17
Zac locked his jaw, he felt suddenly relieved he was telling his father what he wanted to for years.18
“Wrong answer, boy,” Tyler whispered. Then the punches started flying.19
Tyler was punching harder than usually, Zac noticed. Don’t make a sound Leena, he prayed again. Zac hit the wall hard, his head making contact with the solid wall. Stars filled his vision for a second then he saw his father coming at him again. Tyler gripped Zac’s shoulder and began throwing punches into Zac’s stomach.20
Zac screamed involuntary in pain.21
“Stop!” No, Leena go, leave, Zac thought. His father’s hand left his shoulder as he turned to Leena. Zac knees buckled and he slid to the floor.22
“And what do we have here?” Tyler asked Leena.23
“No,” Zac whispered, he raised his head.24
Leena was trapped in the corner of the room, Tyler slowly advancing on her.25
“No,” Zac whispered again, he forced himself up. Zac could see the sheer terror on Leena’s face, “No!” Zac yelled.26
He ran with unknown force at Leena, putting himself between her and Tyler. He wrapped his arms around her and he thought fast, disappear. He closed his eyes and held her tight.27
“What?” Tyler asked, “Where did that boy go?” he asked himself, “I’m dreaming.” He ambled out of the room, leaving the door open.28
Zac held Leena until he was completely sure that Tyler was gone. He released her and silently walked to the door, closed it and locked it. He leaned against the door and sighed.29
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. He closed his eyes.30
He suddenly felt two arms wrap around him. He opened his eyes and wrapped his arms around Leena, it wasn’t really a romantic hug, but a needed hug that they both needed.31
“Thank you,” Leena whispered, “You saved my life, probably.”32
“I’m sorry,” Zac whispered again, this time he couldn’t hold back the tears. He let them fall down and into Leena’s shoulder. Before he knew it, he was sobbing.33
“It’s ok,” Leena whispered, calming him down, “You’re safe, I’m here, don’t worry,” she hugged him tighter.34
Zac lightly undid himself from Leena’s embrace, “I’m sorry,” he whispered, then the room went black.35
