Highway93

"Jet, I’m leaving now. Yes, yes I know. Alright I get it." Marcie snapped her cell phone shut and through it into her Louis Vitton bag. She tugged at her t-shirt then got into her car. The Volvo’s leather seat was cold on her back. Marcie shivered. Something about tonight just didn’t seem right to her. She looked out her window to the moon. Its yellow glow skimmed over the world, casting a glimpse to all humanity of God’s grace.11

Her husband Jet had been patient but was getting antsy. Marcie had stayed out late with her friends and was supposed to be home almost an hour ago, but she had simply lost track of time. Not a big deal or anything to her but for Jet it was a different story. Jet was a little overbearing and very protective. He didn’t want to lose Marcie like his previous wife. The car accident had been a terrible tragedy for him and the whole family, but some way or another; Jet had found a way to continue living life and eventually found Marcie. She was 28, he was 30.22

Marcie put her car in reverse then headed out onto the main road to the next city. She was sure Jet would be standing in their front yard pacing back in forth. “Poor thing” she thought to herself. Marcie was adopted from birth with no brothers, no sisters and no real family. Marcie didn’t know what loss felt like because she had never known anything or anyone that she had lost. Her adoptive parents were sweet and let her move out at 18. They tried to be as parenting as possible but things just never worked out. They basically let Marcie have a lot of freedom without any limitation. Surprisingly, she had turned out fine without having any boundaries. 33

On this particular night, Marcie drove a little faster than the usual speed so she could get home. An unusual feeling was building in her stomach. She sped up to 65 when the limit was 45. What was the chance a cop would be out on this road this late? Cop sirens sounded close behind her, go figure. Marcie slowed to a stop as she pulled over into the brush. She pushed her long hair behind her back and rolled down the window one third of the way. The cop cars lights flashed in and out of her car window and she sat there and waited patiently. She soon heard the cop slam his door shut and the sound of footsteps approaching. 44

“License and registration?” he asked Marcie. She couldn’t see his face because he was taller than her car. She got the papers out and handed them to the cop through the window. “Alright mam everything seems up to date. I’ll let your speeding slide this time. Where are you heading?”55

“163 Monte Carlo north.” Marcie told him straining to look him in the eyes or at least see his face. She gave up and sat back. “I’m just going through that road straight ahead-“66

“No can do.” The cop said handing her the papers back. “Major road work right that way no in or out.” He said in a robotic voice. He placed his hands on his hips and tapped one foot. “The short cut everyone is using is to the left right over there.” He pointed to a small road to the left that looked like it was leading into a dark forest.77

“I’m sure I can get past the road work.” Marcie said hesitatingly as she glanced at the dark woods. “I’m really in a hurry to get home.”88

“I’m sorry, but I can’t let you do that. You must take the detour.” Marcie glanced around nervously for a moment and starred out into the dark. “Don’t worry,” he said smiling “It’s a one way street.”99

Now Marcie had never been out in this part of the town before. She was just following the directions her friends had given her, but the law was the law. So she put her car in drive and began moving forward. When she came to the clearing she saw only a dirt road. She took a deep breath and moved forward into the night. The road was bumpy and owls howled from outside the car. She turned on the radio and looked for a song that might calm her nerves. But she only found news.1010

“Breaking news!” A reporter said from the radio, Marcie turned up the volume. “Over in the south area of block estate and highway 93 there has been a prison break.” 1111

“Hmm,” wondered Marcie “I wonder where that is”1212

“We advise all residents to stay indoors and lock up your house. Thank you.” Marcie turned off the radio then suddenly halted the car to a stop. A sign was hanging up by a post next to a tree. She could see some cabin homes that looked deserted, and other dirt roads to turn down. The cop never told her to turn; Marcie was confused and began to worry. 1313

She couldn’t read the sign so she slowly got out of her car and approached it. “Highway 93… Now entering...Block estate.” She gasped and held a hand to her mouth. Behind her the car door slammed and locked. Her eyes swelled with small tears as more and more fear approached. She ran to her car door and began tugging on the handle. The alarm began going off and Marcie began to run.1414

She put her hands on her head and ran to a cabin. Her cell phone and any line of communication were in that car. Her husband would be worried even more now, and she couldn’t do anything to help it. As Marcie approached the cabin she noticed some frightening things. There was no door, the two windows were broken and it smelt as if someone had died. She coughed and went into the cabin. Three dead bodies were scattered in a corner. Their eyes had been gouged out and their stomachs ripped open wide. One of them was a small child. Marcie threw up fast. In front of her was note. She picked it up and read it.1515

“Family number one: Adam 23, Lana 20 and Katie 4. –prison break John”1616

Marcie ran from the house and crossed over many streets. She found another cabin that looked decent. Her sobs filled the night’s silence. She opened the door and looked in. Two bodies hung from the ceiling on wire. They had been hung and their feet had been cut off. Marcie puked once again. Another note lay on the floor.1717

“Strike 2: Marian 19 and Jack 20. –Prison break John”1818

Marcie ran faster than before. She cried and stumbled through the brush. She came to a clearing in the woods and fell down on her knees. She cried to God, she prayed, she was afraid. Marcie closed her eyes and wished herself away, she imagined she was with Jet, she imagined she was with her foster parents. She cried and cried then it finally ceased to a small whimpering. She opened her eyes and saw a white paper on the ground. Hesitating, Marcie stood up and walked to the note. She opened it and starred.1919

“The pretty girl in the Volvo. –Prison Break john” Marcie shrieked in horror and turned around. Behind her stood a man wearing a blue prison uniform. He brought the ax up high in one fast motion, and then brought it down onto Marcie’s head. Blood gushed from all corners of her skull and she collapsed to the ground. John pulled out a cell phone.2020

“Jet. Yea… I got her. This was way easier than that car accident.”21

Wow, I loved this, the suspense and the final twist especially. This is one of the best i've read today and it didn't go on to long, which just shows that you can write brilliant short stories! I was so scared by the end of it! Well done!
