Saturday at 6:30, Jayde was putting the finishing touch on her white painted face and purple bruised eyes. The make-up was the most important part because it was what sold the costume. She was a vampiress; complete with cape, fangs and black wig with hair that fell in an ocean of plastic to her stomache. Everything was perfect. 1
The party was being held at Cristine's close friends house. It was big and mansion-like, but it didn't stand out in this neighborhood because every house seemed like it's twin. The music was blaring with a loud, pulsing beat but it didn't seem like a normal high school Halloween party. The room was set up so that half was dark and half was bright and everyone who was dancing on one side, ignored the others.2
"Jayde!" Cristine ran up to her, eager to give her a hug but she remembered how she didn't like to be touched. She wore a black ballerina dress with grommets and lace that hung like curtains to a funeral. On her feet were laced up boots with about a four inch heel. There were silver wings tied to her back and black roses encircling her head. 3
"What are you supposed to be?"4
"I'm a death fairy. Like it?"5
"Yeah it's pretty awesome."6
"How about your costume, talk about awesome." Cristine pointed to the plastic fangs dripped in blood that sat in Jayde's mouth. 7
"It's alright I guess. So why is the room so split up?"8
"What are you talking about?"9
Cristine looked at Jayde with a puzzled expression. The room she was standing in was full of orange and black balloons, plastic pumpkins filled with candy and house music. The people that hadn't seen eachother in a long time were re-uniting and everyone else was either dancing or hanging out on the side. 10
"The room; it's split up into two sides. Don't you see it?"11
From Jayde's eyes she saw a huge room with an imagined line for separation. On the brighter side there were normal looking people dancing and talking. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until she saw the other side of the room. There were less lights and everyone looked strangely different. Compared to the other side, these people were all extremely like they never saw the light of day. They stood poised and proper with blueish purple circles under their eyes and a slight evil, red glare. 12
"Your'e crazy." Cristine walked away to re-fill the punch bowl, leaving Jayde to fend for herself. 13
She spent a good half of the night sitting on a metal chair next to the table of food. She chose to sit on the darker side of the room, hoping it would make her less noticeable. 14
"Are you okay"15
Jayde looked up into the bright blue-green eyes of a stranger. He was dressed as scream minus the mask, but it was resting atop his head for the moment. The black cape and glow in the dark skeleton on the rest of his costume, hugged his frame perfectly. She guessed that he had come from the darker side of the room because of his skin. It shown like fresh snow, porcelain underneath the low lights. 16
"I'm fine, just go back to your dancing."17
Her words came out mumbled and she wondered if he didn't hear her. Instead of treating her life every other loser, he sat down next to her in the empty metal chair. 18
"That's okay you seem more interesting anyway."19
"Hah", she scoffed. 20
"What you don't think so?"21
"No, I know so. No one knows me in this city and no one cares to know."22
"I care to know."23
"What's your name?"24
"Ty, and you're Jayde right?"25
"How do you know that? A lot of people I've met already knew me but I've never talked to them before."26
"That's because you're special."27
"Special how? Why does everyone know me?"28
"You'll find out soon. You were invited to this party for a reason you know."29
