‘Darling, where on earth did you get those stains?’ Mum asked surprisingly.2

I glanced at the greenish/purple marks at the back of my school dress. I knew I would get into trouble for this. Thinking quickly, I replied, ‘Well – you know the farm excursion on Monday afternoon? I sort of got pushed over.’3

‘How come?’4

‘Well,’ I continued, ‘There was a commotion and Jimmy, well, pushed me over…’5

‘What kind of commotion?’6

‘Well… you see, Mum, there were some pigs after Jimmy…’7

Mum sighed. ‘Why were the pigs chasing Jimmy?’8

I shrugged. ‘Some of the kids in my class started making rude noises at them – Jimmy worst of all – and they didn’t like it.’9

‘Why were the kids doing that?’10

‘Mrs. Jones had given them some of her special porridge. Said they deserved it after the chooks had pecked them.’11

Mum frowned. ‘Why did the chickens peck them?’12

‘Because Melli went to the shed to get more eggs – the chooks didn’t like that since they were already mad at her for pinching their eggs.’13

‘Why was Melli collecting eggs anyway? – I thought Mrs. Jones was very particular about who goes near her chooks.’14

‘Well,’ I smiled, ‘Marty and his friends were throwing corn at her.15

Mum interrupted again, sounding slightly different this time. ‘Why?’16

‘There was this tiger chasing him and he threw the corn at it, but missed and hit Melli instead.’17

Mum raised an eyebrow.18

‘See, the tiger had gotten away from that circus in town – some kid felt sorry for him and let him out…’19

Mum folded her arms. ‘Stop right there. Start again – this time tell me the whole story – the truth this time, Becky.’20

‘But Mum, I was just getting to the good part, where the little kid…’21

‘I told you – that’s enough!’22

‘But, it is the truth. I could have told you that some Martians took me hostage and…’23

‘Go to your room – we’ll talk about this when your father comes home.’24
