Supernatural: The Resistance

-----
Sam slowly shifted into a sitting position, running a hand over his face. Damn, he couldn't sleep. Getting up, he wandered into the kitchen for a glass of water.1

He had just gulped down a glass when a sound behind him made him turn around and reach for the gun hidden in the back of his pants. It was just Kasey, half hidden by the shadows. Sam started to relax. "Kasey, something wrong?"2

Kasey took a step foreward. "Actually, yeah, Sam, something is wrong."
-----
Sam shot into a sitting position. His chest was heaving and a cold sweat drenched the sheets. Dean looked over at him in concern, setting down the remote. "Sammy? What's wrong?"3

Sam frowned. "Dean, I think I just had a vision."4

Dean chuckled on some coffee. "A vision? As in a Yellow-Eyed Demon vision?"5

"Wait," Sam said, looking around the room. "Where's Kasey?"6

Kasey was in the bathroom, sitting on the floor with a gun in her lap. She clutched it tightly, like a life line. One of her eyes was its normal dark hue, while the other was tainted with yellow. She'd been sitting there for about an hour, and she now knew what she had to do.7

"Don't do it, you fool," the demon sneered through her mouth, her yellow eye seeming to bulge. "I'm offering you power!"8

"Get out of my head," Kasey answered herself, twitching with the effort of holding the Demon back.9

"I'm not going anywhere," the Demon hissed. "I'm just as much a part of you as your heart is." Kasey held the gun level to her forehead. The Demon let loose a chuckle, the sound foreign and evil in her mouth. "That won't do any good. All it will do is mar your pretty face."10

"Kasey!" Dean pounded on the door. "What's going on in there?"11

Kasey's body twitched again. "L-leave me alone!"12

The doorknob shook, but the door did not budge. "Kasey, unlock this door right now," came Sam's agitated voice. "Now!"13

Kasey didn't answer. Instead, she took the safety off her gun. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Then the door flew open. Sam and Dean rushed into the small bathroom, grabbing the gun from her clammy hands. Kasey's eyes opened and looked up at them, her yellow eye glinting in amusement. "I told her not to do it."14

Then Kasey's body shuddered and she passed out.
-----
"Kasey, what the hell were you thinking?" Sam asked quietly to the silent car.15

Dean glanced at her in the rearview mirror. Kasey's pale, limp form was draped over the back seat. She had yet to regain consciousness. Dean gripped the steering wheel tightly. He hadn't thought that she was stupid enough to try and kill herself. Still, it made some sense; the kid had a lot on her plate.16

He sighed. "Just be thankful we got to her when we did, Sam."17

"Thankful?" Sam shifted in his seat, and let out a sarcastic laugh. "What do we have to be thankful for, Dean? Mom's dead, Dad's dead, the world's going to hell..."18

Dean frowned at him. "Whoa, whoa, the world's not going to hell. No as long as we're here."19

"And in a few months, you won't be here, Dean," Sam continued, swallowing past the lump in his throat. "So tell me, what exactly should I be thankful for?"20

Before Dean could answer, a low groan came from the back seats. Both brothers cleared their throats hurriedly. "Kasey?" Sam asked. "How're you feeling?"21

"You have to ask?" came the raspy reply. A pause. "Where're we going?"22

"Bobby's." Sam answered shortly.23

Kasey was silent as she digested this. "There a reason why?"24

"He called me a week ago," Dean shrugged. "Said she had something special to show us. Figured we shouldn't wait too long to get out there; he might decide to go looking for us."25

"So that's it?" Kasey asked, sounding suspicious. "Not for some other reason?"26

"No, we're not going because of you," Sam answered the unasked question.27

"So," Dean asked after a moment. "This morning. You remember much?"28

Kasey leaned back in her seat. "I remember it all."
------
"Hey boys," Bobby Singer greeted them at the door. "Come on in." He took the Hunters into the kitchen, and handed both a shot glass full of holy water. He didn't bother with Kasey. "Sorry boys, just a precaution."29

The brothers gulped the water down quickly. "You can never be too careful," Dean agreed, handing back his glass.30

Bobby leaned toward the doorway. "You can come out now, Ellen. Ain't nothin' in these boys, like I said."31

The brothers broke into grins as Ellen entered the kitchens. She held open her arms. "Come here you two. Long time no see."32

After a quick hug, Sam smiled at her. "Ellen, what're you doing here?"33

She shrugged. "After the incident with the Devil's Gate, I left town. Tried to settle somewhere else, you know, tried to move on. Turns out hunting's just not that easy to turn off." She gave a small smile. "Bobby's been a real friend, lettin' me stay on with him."34

Her eyes flickered over to Kasey, who had maintained a wary look and distance throughout the whole exchange. Ellen gave a larger smile. "But you must be Kasey. I'm Ellen. Nice to meet you. These boys been treatin' you well?"35

Kasey allowed a small smile. "Fair enough."36

"Well, that's all you can ask for, isn't it?"37

Ellen took it upon herself to fix a hot meal, and the others went into the library. Bobby spoke with the boys by the sofa while Kasey stared pensively out the window. He eyed her. "She's not the same as I remember her."38

Dean nodded. "You know, Bobby, she doesn't remember anything. Not us picking her up, or coming to your house... none of it."39

"The Demon?" Bobby asked, his eyes hardening.40

Dean lowered his voice even farther. "Yeah. She knows now, but... she's taking it pretty hard."41

"Well, you can't really blame her, can you?"42

Sam spoke up. "She tried to kill herself this morning, Bobby. Not that it would have down any good; she knows guns don't kill demons."43

Bobby's eyebrows twitched. "Then I'm guessing you don't want her to know about this." Reaching into his vest pocket, he withdrew an antique gun, one that the brothers would know anywhere.44

The Colt.
-----
All the Hunters gathered around a table in Bobby's dining room, eating and talking. The food was good, the company better. Bobby in particular looked happy; it'd been a long time since his house had been this full of happiness.45

"You know, this is nice," Ellen said during a lull in the conversation. "Seems like we never get a break anymore."46

"Tell me about it," Dean agreed, leaning back in his chair. "I feel like fricken' Han Solo leading the Resistance against the forces of evil."47

Sam gave a lopsided grin. "No fair, man. I wanna be Solo."48

"Han Solo had the Falcon," Dean replied smugly. "I've got the Impala. You can be Luke; the whiney kid with weird powers."49

Even as Sam kicked him under the table and made a face, Dean felt his chest swell with happiness. He hadn't seen Sam this lighthearted in a while. 50

Across the table, Kasey snorted. Even she seemed to be enjoying herself. "Care to let us join your party?"51

Dean shrugged. "Bobby is so Obi-Wan; the wise old guy. Ellen can be Leia." Dean frowned thoughtfully at Kasey. "I dunno, Sam, help me out here."52

Sam grinned mischievously. "I think she's Yoda. Tiny, kind of annoying, and really powerful. But tiny."53

Everyone cracked up, Kasey included. Then Ellen picked up her drink. "To the Resistance," she toasted.54

Everyone else followed suite. "The Resistance."
-----
After dinner, Kasey went upstairs to wash up, and the Winchesters used the opportunity to grill Bobby, who brought the Colt back out.55

"Alright, Bobby, you gonna tell us what the big deal is?" Dean asked, stretching in his seat. "I thought we used all the bullets."56

Bobby nodded. "We did. But it's been a project of mine to try to figure out what makes it tick."57

"I'm guessing you found a way to make it work, right?" Dean asked.58

Bobby chuckled. "You've never doubted me before, have you?"59

"So it works with any bullet?" Sam pressed. Bobby patiently nodded.60

"Have you tested it?" Dean asked. 61

Now Bobby looked kind of mad. "Do you boys honestly think I'd let you go off with a weapon I hadn't tested myself?"62

Dean looked down. "Sorry, Bobby. We're just a little on edge. What with Kasey and all..."63

"I've been meaning to ask you about that," Ellen spoke up, coming to sit with them. "Why do you keep her around? Isn't that like riding with little Hitler as your sidekick? I mean, you know what she'll become."64

Dean clenched his jaw and looked at Sam. "Sam, you wanna answer that?" He only shifted uncomfortably, so Dean continued. "See, my brother here thinks she's the key to getting me out of the pit."65

Ellen frowned and Bobby raised an eyebrow. "And how do you think you're going to do that?" he asked the younger Winchester.66

Sam rubbed the back of his neck. "Her soul's gotta be worth five times what Dean's is." Dean muttered something, and Sam continued. "All I'm saying is that we could do, I don't know, a swap or something. Offer Kasey's soul instead of Dean's."67

The room was silent for a moment. Finally, Bobby let out a breath. "That's a dangerous line of thought, boy."68

Sam sighed. "I know."69

Despite their honed senses, none of the Hunters noticed Kasey lingering just outside the kitchen door.
-----
Sam slowly shifted into a sitting position, running a hand over his face. Damn, he couldn't sleep. Getting up, he wandered into the kitchen for a glass of water.70

He had just gulped down a glass when a sound behind him made him turn around and reach for the gun hidden in the back of his pants. It was just Kasey, half hidden by the shadows. Sam started to relax. Then he realized that she was fully dressed, with both her leather jacket and boots on. His heartbeat quickened slightly. "Kasey, something wrong?"71

Kasey took a step foreward. "Actually, yeah, Sam, something is wrong."72

With that, she stepped forward again and punched him in the face, and then in the gut. Unprepared, Sam stumbled backward into the sink as pain needled through his nose. Taking a few more hits, he withdrew his gun, cocking it and aiming it at Kasey. "Don't move."73

Without blinking, Kasey brought her leg up, kicking Sam between the legs and using his distraction to knock the gun from his hand. It hit the ground at the Sam time as Sam, going off and firing into the door. A kick to Sam's head sent his thoughts reeling. When his vision finally cleared, he looked up to see Kasey standing over him, Bobby's huge stake knife in hand. She was laughing.74

"Aw, Sammy, that was too easy," she cooed, pinning him to the cabinet with one knee while she brushed some hair out of his face. "But you weren't really trying, were you? You were too busy worrying about your dumb ass plan."75

Sam glared at her; unfortunately, it was true. Not that he'd ever admit it. "I don't know what you're talking about."76

"Oh, but you do, Sammy!" Kasey brought the knife forward, stabbing it through Sam's shoulder and pinning him to the cabinet with it. Sam let out a cry of agony. Vaguely, he heard Dean call his name from the living room. The pain was threatening to make him pass out.77

Kasey twisted the knife a little, earning another scream. "Stay awake, Sammy. We still have more to talk about." She pinched at the wound. "Like how you think you can sell me out to save your stupid ass brother."78

That got Sam's attention. "How'd you-"79

"I hear things, alright? But I thought I'd be nice and let you know ahead of time. No way am I going to hell for Dean. End of story. So you should probably start thinking of something else." With a smile, she stood up.80

Clutching at his shoulder, Sam glared at Kasey's retreating figure. "Dean'll kill you for this."81

Hand on the doorknob, Kasey looked back at him with a sneer. "But you won't let him, will you, Sammy?" Then she left. Sam heard the front door close and then the sound of a car starting up.
-----
As Dean stitched up his brother's shoulder, he watched as Sam grimaced and tried to stifle a groan. Obviously, the painkillers hadn't kicked in yet. Anger coursed through his veins. Nobody hurt his little brother and got away with it. "I swear to God, Sam, I'll hunt down that bitch and kill her."82

Ignoring his brother's comment, Sam looked at Bobby, who was sitting at his desk looking very frustrated. "What'd she take, Bobby? The Colt?"83

The older Hunter sighed. "Not much, from what I can tell. I mean, aside from the car. The Colt's safe. I'm just glad she didn't take one of our cars, what with the arsenals and all."84

Dean practically growled. "That's because she knew that if she'd hurt my brother AND taken my car, I would've killed her then brought her back and killed her again." Dean noticed Sam looked troubled. "Sam?"85

"Dean, remember when yesterday's vision? Well, I think-"86

"Hang on a sec, you had a vision? I thought you'd said they'd stopped." Bobby interrupted.87

"Well, they had. Last time I had one was when we first met Kasey," Sam explained.88

Dean cleared his throat. "You were saying?"89

Sam took a deep breath. "I think I saw Kasey in the kitchen. I mean, before she attacked me."90

Dean stood up angrily. "Why didn't you say something?"91

"I don't know, Dean. I woke up before anything bad happened. Besides, it was kind of distorted."92

Dean took a calming breath. "Did you see where she'd go?" Sam shook his head. Frustrated, Dean plopped down in the nearest chair. "Fan-fricken'-tastic. Here we go again."
