The Legend of the White Wolf

As I packed up my sleeping pack and pans1

I caught a glance of a pair of yellow eyes2

But they vanished into the thick, black forest before I could reach it3

When the morning sun shown brightly4

I started out fresh5

My sled dogs pulling at the sled6

Pulling me towards my home7

During the first rest8

My lead dog became reckless9

Pulling at his harness and growling10

I looked once again into the forest11

Another flash of white shone into my eyes12

Then just as it had appeared, it disappeared13

When we pressed on14

The dogs were quicker15

I did not know the reason for their increase of power16

Until I looked behind me17

The same glowing eyes stared at me18

The stare seemed to reach down right into my soul19

The white fur was now completely visible20

Shining as bright as the sun21

And its black nose gleamed like a button22

It was the legendary white wolf 23

The one that I had heard about from the hunters back home24

I raced the dogs across the tundra25

Until we came to the edge of that frozen river26

My heart stopped as my dogs whined to cross27

I looked behind me and froze as many white wolves appeared28

Snarling, snapping and baring their fangs in pure hunger29

I pulled out my gun as quickly as I could30

But as soon as I touched it, a wolf sprang upon me31

The one turned to many32

Soon I heard the whimpers and howls of my dogs33

I began to give up until I heard another source of sounds34

It was whimpering and howls but not from my dogs35

From the wolves themselves36

I looked up and saw before me37

The same white wolf that had stalked my dogs and I38

It fought for me and my dogs39

As it slashed the alpha male I drew out my gun and shot40

I looked at the wolf and in an instant it fell on its stomach41

The white wolf that had saved me looked back at me still on the ground42

Then nuzzled me43

That wolf saved my life that day and three of my dogs44

After that day45

I lived in the forest and passed on my story46

The forest was not know as ordinary47

Nor was it even cut down48

The white wolf would appear and stop them49

That wolf still stays with me50

In my heart51

I still remember looking up that one last time52

To see that white wolf’s tail racing away into the woods53
