||A Sweet Far Thing||

1

It is a sweet far thing
of mystery and loss
filling us with unreliable hope
caressing our dreams
testing our sense of destiny.2

It is a worthless and painful thing
Many would say
Quick tempered and rash it is
Fast to judge and quick to fly.3

But they have not tasted
it’s sweet sugary flavor
Have not felt the warmth
with which it fills our stone hearts.4

Oh the longing it creates in us.
The yearning to find it.
Even the faintest of hearts cannot turn away
From this sweet far thing.5

We search the farthest ends of the Earth
Under every rock,
Inside every cave
Craving so intensely what we cannot create ourselves.6

But try we do.
Only to feel the harsh slap of failure,
The burn of rejection
And the new holes of the emptiness
Of what was unsuccessfully made.7

Turning our backs
We blame only it for our self created defeats.
We demand to know why
Why it let us down, why it left us.8

Its only answer is a lightly whispered
“How could I leave you?
When I wasn’t truly there to start”9

Bitter and cold we refuse to listen
Its sweet tune bounces off the icy walls of our hearts.
Slowly chipping away our built up defenses10

It softens us for when we will embrace it
For the first time,
The last time,
For the true sweet thing
Need only come once.11
