Jayde was in her room lying on her small bed with her headphones in, and the music turned up loud. Her mind was entranced with the familiar beat of the cymbals mashing with the drums.1

The words echoed in her head as the wail of the bass guitar pierced the quiet humming of her thoughts. She closed her eyes, letting the music just take her away, but then she felt a presence standing in front of her. 6

"Jayde, honey are you sleeping? Someone's on the phone for you." Her Aunt's hand was outstretched toward her, and she smiled warmly looking at her with brightened eyes. 7

(Maybe it's Carsyn) Jayde secretly hoped. She felt her heart beating faster, ready to rip out of her chest and her palms began to sweat. 8

Taking the phone from her Aunt, she braced herself. Knowing if it wasn't him she shouldn't allow herself to get depressed. He was just a stupid boy, another stupid boy. 9

"Hello?" Jayde asked cautiously.10

"Hey Jayde, what's up?"11

It was Cristine. Suddenly all the excitement inside her washed away, leaving her drained and every bit of depressed she swore she wouldn't be. Jayde cleared her mind and spoke, using a forced happy tone. 12

"Nothing just listening to Puddle of Mudd."13

"That's cool, I love them. So since I don't know your address and I kind of ran out of envelopes...are you busy Saturday night?"14

"No I don't think so...why?"15

"You're invited to my Halloween party!"16

A party? Parties made her uncomfortable. It the equivalent of screaming in the middle of the hall at school that you were a loser with no friends. She wouldn't know anyone because she had just moved here. Should she go? Jayde wasn't sure but something told her it might be...interesting. The feeling of a thousand swarming butterflies in her stomache told her this party would change her life. Little did she know, it would change her life in more ways than one. 17

Her voice came out in a hoarse whisper. After being quiet for so long Cristine worried that she had hung up. 18

"Jayde? Are you there?"19

"Yeah, I can go."20

"Really? That's great! Okay, well it's a costume party so make sure you come dressed up. Kyle's going as my knight in shining armour."21

Jayde could only imagine how wide Cristine's smile was at that moment. Her happiness seemed to radiate through the phone line. 22

"So see you then okay?"23

"Yeah, see ya."24

It wouldn't be so bad, maybe she'd make more new friends. All she needed was a good costume and she already had the perfect idea. 25
