Don't Answer The Door - Ch. 22

Eva and Alex began to see some lights far away. They knew they were getting closer to town.2

"Why did you have to live in the desert?" Eva asked, not looking for an answer.3

"I can't walk anymore, Alex. I can't, I'm about to collapse right here." Eva said, as she put her arm on Alex's shoulder for support.4

Alex wrapped his arms around  Eva's waist, trying to help her stand up, although her legs were feeling weak under her. 5

"Want to take a rest?" Alex asked, afraid that something might happen to Eva.6

Eva nodded yes and Alex kicked some rocks off the curb of the street. He was trying to make a spot for Eva to sit without getting poked by anything. 7

"Here you go." Alex said, helping Eva sit.8

Alex was glad he got to stop. He was also feeling dehydrated and was really tired, but he didn't want to admit it to Eva. He was glad she had the courage to finally stop walking for a well needed rest. 9

"Wow.. I just realized how much screwed up shit we have went through in our lives. It's like all catching up to us all in the same time... I hate this Alex." Eva said, wiping away her fresh warm tears. 10

Alex didn't know how to respond to Eva's statement. He had it rough, just as she did. He was hating the situation as well, but he didn't know how to comfort Eva. Alex looked down the long road, and looked at the bright street lights. They were so far away, yet visible, as if they were there to taunt them. 11

Eva laid on her back and put her hands under her head. She stared at the sky, and her mouth gaped open as she saw something. She sat straight up.12

"Alex! Alex look up!"  Eva said excitedly.13

Alex did not look up right away, he was just surprised at Eva's enthusiastic shouts. He watched her pointing up at the sky, so he looked up.14

"Oh wow!" Alex exclaimed.15

"Make a wish!" Eva said, as she looked up at the shooting star. 16

She closed her eyes and made a wish. She silently wished, begged with all her might, for her misery to finally end. 17

"Please..." She said in a silent whisper.18

"Huh?" Alex said, as he heard Eva say something. He couldn't quit make out the words though.19

"Oh, it's nothing. Make a wish?" She asked, wondering if Alex made a wish.20

"Yep." He said, as he laid on his back looking up at the sky, wondering how long till sunrise. 21

Alex yawned. He stood up quickly, knowing if he were to lay down any longer he would fall asleep. Eva saw that Alex was getting up, so she stood up as well, wiping away dirt from her pants.22

"Good God. I'm going to take a shower first thing." Eva said.23

It just suddenly hit her, what were they going to do when they got into town? She asked Alex, and she didn't get a responce.24

"Alex, I mean.. who is going to believe us? I just got raped by Matt, and all of the sudden he's murdered?! They're going to think I did it! Or worse, You!"25

"Oh God.. You're right Eva." Alex said, fear rising from deep inside.26

For what seemed the longest time, Eva and Alex just stood there wondering what they were going to do with their lives.27

"Eva, we have to tell the police. There is no doubt in my mind that we have to tell the police." Alex said.28

"But.." Eva said, but was cut off by Alex.29

"We have to tell them, but by phone. We're going to your house Eva and you're going to pack a single bag of the most needed things of yours. Just a bag, and we're going to take whatever money your.. whatever money Matt had hidden away. We're going to use some of it for bus passes, and the rest to get back on our feet."30

"Where are we going to go?" Eva asked, contemplating the plan Alex came up with.31

"That I don't know yet. We are not running away from the police Eva. They'd know we did not kill anyone. We're running away from Cage." Alex said.32

Eva stared at Alex, finally agreeing with the fact that they're still in danger. 33

"You're right...But we still need a place to go.." Eva said quietly, looking at the ground.34

"I know, but I guess we'll figure that out when time comes." Alex said.35

He took Eva's hand and began to walk again. He didn't know if it was just his imagination but he felt that the light was going farther away from them, the closer they were to getting into town. Alex shut his eyes tightly, seeing red spots everywhere.36

His eyes snapped open when he heard an engine of a car. He turned around and saw a big silver truck driving slowly towards them. Alex let go of Eva's hand and jumped into the middle of the road. He began waving his arms frantically, wanting the truck to stop. 37

Eva screamed for Alex to get out of the way because she noticed the truck was not slowing down. 38

"Move damn it!" She screamed, and then she watched as Alex jumped aside. He was on the other side of the road. 39

The truck was now between them, and it slowed down completely. Eva and Alex just stared at it, and then Eva began to scream. A body was thrown out of the back of the truck, and it began to roll down the road, hitting rocks. The truck stopped completely, and Eva became afraid.40

To her horror, she began to watch as the lights of the truck switched on, and she began to hear a beeping sound. 41

"Oh God no.." She said as she realized what was happening.42

The driver of the truck was going in reverse! The big tires on the left side of the truck rolled over the dead body. Eva noticed that the head was not on the neck of the body, and she wished she never realized that. Just then, the head was thrown out of the truck, and it rolled right to Eva's feet. The truck drove away quickly and Eva began screaming as she saw cold blue eyes staring at her. 43

"Oh God! Oh God! Oh my God!" She screamed, jumping up and down, horrified.44

Alex ran to Eva, and moved her away from the head. Alex bent over to the head. He noticed a piece of paper covering the mouth. Alex clenched his hands into fists, and then took in a deep breath. He unclenched his right hand and slowly took the paper off, but it didn't get off. 45

Eva heard Alex gasp.46

"Oh fuck! The paper.. it's stapled to her lips..." Alex said, disgusted.47

Alex ripped it off, and he turned his head to the right, squinting his eyes. He felt awful for what he just did, but he needed to so he could unfold the paper and read it.48

Before Alex had the chance to read the note, he heard Eva gasping, and she began throwing up. 49

"There's no tongue! Her tongue is missing!!" She exclaimed as she began to scream. 50

"Oh why, why would anyone do this?! Who is she?!" Eva asked. 51

Deep inside, Eva knew that Alex would have the answer to her question. She noticed that a lot of the people ending up dead, he knew them. A chill ran down her body. Eva knew that Alex didn't kill anyone, but she deep in the pits of her stomach, she was afraid.52

"She's Carter's girlfriend.." He said.53

Eva forgot that she had asked a question, and for a moment she was confused.54

"Who's Carter?" She asked, suspiciously.55

"He was a friend of mine. Cage murdered him..." Alex said, the expression on his face turning cold as he stared at the paper, yet to be read.56

"I'm sorry.." Eva told Alex.57

She realizing he must be going through hell. After all, all his friends, everyone he loved was being murdered. At that realization, she stood still, and her lips began to tremble. 58

"Alex, how many friends do you have?" She asked, remembering that he said earlier that he doesn't have many.59

"I, I don't know. Not many are left, I guess." Alex said, as he swallowed, tears welling in his eyes.60

Alex was smart. He caught on to what Eva was going to say.61

"Don't worry Eva. You're not next. And if you were, do you think I would let anything happen to you? I would give my life to save yours..." He said, trying to comfort her.62

Eva wrapped her arms around Alex and began sobbing on his shoulder.63

"We need to get out of this town, go far away. We need to do that now Alex." She said, grabbing his left hand and pulling him towards town.64

Alex didn't budge. He remembered that in his right hand was the letter. He wondered what it said. Alex knew who it was from, Cage.65

"What are you waiting for? Come on!" Eva screamed.66

"The letter.." Alex said, showing the letter to Eva.67

"Open it, c'mon hurry up damn it!" She said, wanting to run away as soon as possible.68

Alex took his left hand out of Eva's grasp and he began to unfold the paper. Once it was unfolded, Alex began to read it. Eva looked at Alex's expression and she grew worried. Alex's face showed horror. Eva was afraid of what the letter said.69

"Alex?" Eva tried to get his attention.70

Alex did not answer her. It's like he wasn't even there.71

"Alex? What does it say?" Eva asked, afraid of what the answer might be.72
