Fragment of Somthing I found In My Writing

I sat on the bench with the other children listing to the music that came from the window two floors up. It was beautiful and nothing we had heard. There were so many notes! By the time the man ended playing everybody but me had left. The music confused them. The man came to the window to close it but stopped as he spotted me. 1

“What’s your business here young man?” he asked me as I stared up at him and he stared down.2

“Why, your music is so beautiful Sir. I have never heard anything like that.” I stuttered frightened of what he would do to me. 3

“Scat! Don’t tell anybody you have heard my music!” he said and then banged the window shut. I ran through the cobbled streets to the small broken down building that was once a house to a royal family until it was abounded when the family moved.4

This was the home to many of England’s pickpocketers. All of them were no older that 19! I entered through the back door to find an argument. Joe and mike were having a fistfight. No one bothered to break it up. Everybody there didn’t care. 5

That night as they all gathered around the table and showed everybody what they stole that day Sally had something special. Or at least she said so. She didn’t have it. Not yet. She needed help. 6

The next day I was in the group that went with Sally. Sam the leader said that if I did this job I’d get a better one next time. This job was to go and steal loaves of bread from a bakery across town.8

We quietly climbed onto the roof and waited there for nighttime. When the moon came up we climbed down the chimney. No one was in the bakery as we roamed through it. We quickly grabbed food and then went back to the chimney but then at that moment we heard a gun go off. We were wrong. Somebody was still here.9

We scattered trying to find an exit. Some broke the windows and climbed out, other ran through the door and still others climbed back up the chimney. I was too late to do any. At that moment the police burst through the door. One of the men grabbed me and I screamed. I yelled for them to let me go. I kicked and I punched. But that didn’t do me much good. The man that was holding me down was a tough man and he didn’t even feel any of my attempts to get away so I stopped and pretended to be dead.10

My body sagged and my eyes closed. I made myself look as lifeless as possible. The man holding me looked down.11

“I think this one just died!” he said.12

“Don’t let go of him! He might just be playing possum!” said a gruff voice from behind. A man had just entered. By my calculations he was the leader. After that I got taken away somewhere.13

I woke up to find myself lying on a heap of straw. I was behind iron bars. Outside was big fat man snoring. The jail man probably I thought. I was right. On his belt there was a big brass loop with keys hanging from it. 15
