Where am I? My eyes flickered up towards a bright halogen lamp. I didn't recognize anything, probably because my vision hadn't returned to its normal crystal clear self, a grey haze obscured my vision. I'd once been told that being par blind was worse than being blind. I'd have hated to have to walk around forever, but the veil of grey mist that covered my eyes started to lift as a sharp pain shot through me again. It sliced through my lower back muscles in an extravagant fashion, like a chef slicing carrots on a chopping board. At least the blindness had lifted, and all too soon the pain ripping through my back dwindled in insignificance. 1
I was locked into a room of mirrors, and just one door in the far corner of the room, my mind reeled. Had I let something, anything slip? Maybe this was my examination, but the door handle began to turn and my heart beat with the speed of a thousand drums being played. 2
In stepped a tall, dark man. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror once more, my brown eyes were wide open in fear. There was no controlling the terror I felt as this monolith of a man approached me, his strides long and confident. I choked, but he didn't stir as the hard leather clicked against the marbled floor, my chair screeched across the ground as I instinctively moved backwards. He stopped though, staring at me through grey, empty eyes. The gaze was that of which horror writers had told in the early years, my heart rammed 3
against my rib cage and I began to wonder if my ribs might break from the pressure. He opened his mouth, and closed it again like a Goldfish, he looked out of place in this mirrored prison. He would have looked out of place anywhere though. That was, until he spoke.4
"Are you always so careless with your diary? Or was it a mere slip of the mind that you left it open on your desk?" His teeth were cracked, broken and a sickly shade of yellow, as he grinned malevolently at me, pushing the velvet bound notebook towards me, before seating himself at a rusting metal chair. 5
I mouthed silently, just longing to grab my book and run through the bowels of the ship, was I even on the ship though? Truth be told, it wouldn't help even if I did escape.6
"Indeed, do you know What would happen if this book got out? If the truth ever got shown to the masses? Pandemonium, that's what. The government has kept this knowledge secret and believe me, I'm here to use whatever means of torture to find out the source of your information." The grin on his face widened in glee, as he snarled another string of words as he leaned closer to me, "We've been watching you, oh yes, you're smart but careless." His breath reeked of rotten meat, and his cheeks were sunken like blown out holes in white snow. 7
"But, what about freedom? I don't know much, you've made a really big mistake. I swear. Just let me go," I paused, before realising that words wouldn't help, but pressed on anyway, "Why don't you just kill me?" I have no idea why I even said it. All I realised that it was a mistake, a very big mistake.8
