my Twilight fanfic [not official title, not finished]

Chapter One: a Twilight fanfic1

The only thing I remember hearing from the night before was my lullaby echoing in my family's gigantic house. The words 'I love you' repeated in a three-part harmony. Two angelic perfect voices and one course voice.2

I remember feeling a warm, furred body curled protectively around me. My tiny fingers tangled in the fur. My mother's cold hand caressed my cheek as I drifted into slumber.3

Rays of the early morning sun streamed through my bedroom window, bouncing off everything sparkly in my bedroom.4

My mother's wedding gift from the proposed Volturi leader, Aro, hung on a hook on the wall. That, too, refracted every color of visible light, sending rainbows to the hardwood floor.5

Shivers were sent down my spine as I watched it shimmer. I remembered immediately the horrible days as we waited for the Volturi to arrive. To end us. Thankfully, they never got that chance.6

But they weren't going to forget about the issue just yet.7

A few days after the Volturi left us in peace, I found Aro's gift lying in the corner of my bedroom. I picked it up, almost permanently crushing the chain in my hand. My strength was improving every day, like my growth. Though, I had yet a way to control it with my anger.8

Before I entered the living room, my parents could hear my feet pattering against the hallway floor.9

In one blink, I was in my father's arms and his lips kissed my warm cheeks.10

Wondering why the necklace was in my bedroom, I held it up in my mother's face.11

She smiled half-heartedly.12

"Mommy doesn't want it anymore. You can play with it."13

Her singing voice chimed in my sensitive ears. I reached out for her to hold me. I stared at her until she responded to my request.14

I inherited my eyes from my mother. Those, which were once chocolate brown in her human years, were now gradually changing from newborn red to a golden topaz. I, to Jacob and my father's great interest, inherited my mother's chocolate brown eye color. This small, but rather large detail, reminded them of the old Bella Swan before her transformation. 15

My mother gladly reached for me, too, as my father handed me over. Instantly, I placed my hand to her cheek. My father and I waited as she listened to my plea for food.16

"Edward, she's thirsty." My mother said.17

"Who's going with her this time?" My father calmly answered.18

"I can round up Jake. The two haven't seen each other in at least twenty-four hours." My mother laughed. Her hand tugged at my reddish-brown curls as she looked down at me. "How would you like that, Reneesme?"19

Eagerly, I shoved my answer into her head.20

My parents chuckled in unison.21

With me on my mother's back, we ran to Jacob Black's house. 22

Jacob was always so warm compared to the rest of my family. Mostly because his is a werewolf, or 'shapeshifter' as my dad explained to the Volturi guard.23

That single white lie pretty much saved the whole wolf pack that day in the clearing.24

I loved Jacob as if he was a part of our family. Along with the other members of the pack. Though, I understood that Jacob had imprinted on me. It was impossible to keep him away from me for very long. 25

Without me in his life, Jacob felt he had nothing to live for. Not even for his pack, his family.26

His imprinting caused an issue with my father. Jacob and my father would fight on several occasions, discussing the 'future', as they'd put it. 27

Realizing the inevitable, my father would let us be together. I returned Jacob's love, and no one could take that away.28

We arrived at Jacob's that day to find him working on another car in his garage. So many faded memories were made here in my mother's human years. Despite the fuzziness, I enjoyed watching them. I cried when they cried, and laughed when they laughed. 29

My favorite memory I've watched was the day my mother punched Jacob. Broke her hand really well, and my father was enraged at Jacob. 30

But, all in all, Jacob was a wonderful friend to my mother, and always would be.31

"Hey, Jake." My mother casually called out. 32

Jacob's russet-colored face looked up to meet my gaze. A grand smile crept across his lips as he sprinted towards us. He did not hesitate to pick me off my mother's back.33

"Nessie!" He cheered. 34

He swung me in a circle above his head. My mother chuckled a few feet away. 35

Now cradled in his arms, I placed my hand against his bare neck.36

"I missed you, too, Nessie." He said softly. He kissed my forehead. "So, Bells, what did you come here for?" He asked. He did not take his eyes off of mine.37

"Nessie's thirsty again. Want to join us this time?" 38

"Sure. Give me a head start." He placed me on the driveway pavement and turned towards the forest edge. 39

Jacob didn't even bother to tell his father, Billy, he was going out, or to clean up his mess in the garage. He wanted to be with me that badly. I smiled at that observation.40

The tall, large boy, who looked to be a middle-aged man, leaped first into the forest beside his house. We could hear the faint sound of his clothes hitting the forest floor with our precise hearing. 41

"Here we go." My mother leaped off after him, following the scent of werewolf. I sprinted at the moment she did.42

The 'stench' as my father called it, never bothered me as it did towards everyone else. Although, thanks to those long weeks waiting for the Volturi, I think everyone had become immune to the smell of werewolf.43

Shortly after we entered the forest, he was at our side. The russet wolf's eyes glowed at me as I ran between him and my mother.44

By this time, the sun was rising ever so slightly behind the trees. Puffs of cotton candy floated, untouched above us. The snow lay on the ground in melting mounds. Soft hues of purple and orange gave a bright golden tint to every surface, including the blinding snow.45

If it wasn't for the snow itself, I'd thought it was Fall again. 46

My mother and I leaped weightless, like the flutter of butterfly wings. We were silent compared to Jacob's loud thumping as we ran. 47

My attention of the forest was now broken as I heard the heartbeat of a deer or buck. I was not sure. I sniffed the air, locked now on the scent of a buck. My eyes darted quickly back and forth, trying to follow the path leading to my prey. I barred my teeth, and my running quickened.48

Jacob howled a laugh, hoping for a race. 49

I smiled and darted forward ahead of them.50

"Be careful! Please, Jake!" My mother's wary voice was close behind. He barked softly, letting her know everything was okay.51

I took down the buck before Jacob even got close to the pond. Unfortunate that I had to ruin the buck's quiet time. Couldn't blame me though, I was thirsty. 52

The water was covered with a sheen layer of ice. Only small patches had melted down into thinner spots to reveal water. Miscellaneous rocks and boulders were visible under melting patches of snow. 53

I paused as I was washing the blood off my face My neck snapped around to see that my mother and Jacob froze where they stood. I listened harder. 54

Someone was coming in the distance.55

I ran to Jacob's massive body, and wrapped my hands in his fur. 56

"Alice." My mother breathed.57

Southwest of the pond, we watched as she danced into the field. As she got closer, her dance was more of a sprint. Alice's black hair flew askew as she ran rapidly towards us. Her face resembled whatever peeved her. 58

"Alice?" My mother asked.59

She stopped in front of my mother, talking very quickly. I caught only the interesting parts of their rushed conversation. Alice apparently had a vision. I could not swallow my saliva anymore when I heard what she had seen. Jacob growled beside me in protest.60

A Volturi was sent to spy on us. 61

"Just one?" 62

"Just one." Alice confirmed.63

Another pair of feet were headed towards us, stampeding through the forest. My father came through the trees, fury easily readable on his face.64

He stopped abruptly next to my mother, wrapping an arm around her waist. He glanced at me, then Jacob, who was slowly curling his tail around me for protection.65

What did the Volturi want this time?66

What seemed on cue, we all looked toward an opening in the trees. The same opening Alice came through. One shadowed figure waltzed forth, both cowardly and deadly.67

"What do you want with us, member of the guard? State your name and reason for following us here." My father shouted across the water. His words seemed to reverberate off the surface of the pond. The power creating a series of cracks separating the ice.68

The cloaked figure halted in its tracks. The pond sat directly between us now, creating a sort of cease-fire zone. 69

Five against one - no way this member of the guard was looking for a fight. Unless the figure was suicidal. With Jacob here, he or she would not dare attacking. Our werewolf friends, our allies, permanently frightened the Volturi that day in the clearing.70

Meticulously, two frail, clawed hands reached towards the figure's shadowed face. This person's veins were clearly visible through her ivory skin. A silver band circled the ring finger of the left hand. 71

They were women's hands. Too frail for a man, even for a male vampire.72

The figure dropped her hood to reveal glittering white hair, almost silver, down to below her waist. A single thick braid fell over her left shoulder, with an ornate gemstone clip at the tip. Her red eyes were soft, as was the skin on her face. 73

She was a striking sight, no doubt.74

She could see we did not remember her face among the Volturi who had come almost a week ago, from the way we reacted to her arrival. Obviously this was a Volturi guard wife, though. Her stance said she held great authority. 75

As threatening as she looked, she did not come, hoping for a fight.76

"My name is Sulpicia. I am Aro's wife. I have not been sent here for violence. The Volturi ancients have agreed to send members of the guard to witness the growth of Miss Cullen." The woman motioned her chin towards me. As she spoke, her razor-sharp teeth protruded through her lips. Jacob's tail tightened around me. 77

Alice and my parents rushed into a defensive hunch in front of Jacob and I. A snarl broke through my father's chest and my mother froze, concentrating on her shield around the five of us.78

"Peace, dear Edward. I am harmless. I do not wish to hurt Miss Cullen or your family." There were no signs of struggle with her last word, even as she looked over Jacob's wolf form. 79

She accepted our abnormal family. Then again, as my mother always said, what wasn't abnormal anymore?80

"Please understand as I say I took my time traveling here, so Miss Alice would be forewarned to my arrival. She did warn you all, did she not?" 81

Alice nodded, as did my parents, then Jacob. Their stances did not faulter.82

"Good, then. I do see the half-immortal child has grown at least an inch since the our last visit." Sulpicia smiled when her and I made eye contact. I cringed to Jacob's body. A few loose curls partially hid my face from Sulpicia. 83

So, the Volturi weren't done with us yet. I could see none of us were ready for this. Not even Alice. I was hooked on the idea that this must have been last minute decision making for the ancients. 84

Really urgent thinking.85

Pushing my hand into Jacob's wide neck, I shared with him my thoughts on this visitor. I asked if he thought my conclusion was believable. He shrugged.86

I scowled. I wanted to know what was up. My father's calm voice broke my thinking.87

My father straightened his lean body, standing erect. His hand reached out to hold my mother's hand. 88

"Everyone back down. You too, Jacob. She's speaks the truth."89

Across the field, the woman smiled at us.90

We were all very tense. We had no idea what to say or do next. Alice was beginning to drift off towards the trees and rubbing her temples, trying to see the future of this spontaneous meeting. 91

It really didn't help that she could see neither Jacob nor I in her visions.92

Sulpicia's head bowed discretely. 93

"Apologies. I ask of you to accept this fact: I sent myself. They were ready to send Aro to witness. Even as his wife, a wife of an ancient, I wasn't having that. Aro is much too...unpredictable. Except to Sir Edward or Miss Alice, of course. But, I knew more would follow if he came here." Sulpicia interjected. 94

We knew whom she was taking about. Renata, for sure. Possibly Caius if he was calm enough for Aro's liking. Then there was Jane and Alec, the witch twins. 95

They were stuck together like magnets. More powerful paired together, more vulnerable when not. Wherever Aro went, if by command, they followed.96

The way she looked at me when she spoke told me she was much kinder than Aro probably ever knew. Sulpicia must have the one thing Aro didn't. Kindness.97

To this, I immediately opened up to her. I began to trust her. I was cautious, but more for my family's sake rather than my own. I loosened my grip on Jacob, and this made him tense up more. He knew I had a soft spot for her now, and that scared him.98

I smiled back at Sulpicia, showing her I, at least, welcomed her.99

--------------------------------------------------------------------100

The morning I woke up remembering that day by the water, a year had already gone by. I was as tall as a nine-year-old would be, and yet I was considered six years old.101

My rapid growth frightened my family, including Jacob. Grandfather Carlisle still recorded my growth and questioned me on various occasions. Asking me how I felt and if I was in pain.102

Each time, I'd shove the same answer into his head, on repeat if necessary.103

Jacob seemed to be the most concerned with my growth. 104

He once told me that no matter what the cost, he would do anything to keep me alive, forever. 105

I rolled out of bed, staring intently at the shimmering gift on my wall. Why, would you ask, would I display such a gift if I despised the giver?106

Well, to wear it the day when we would take down the Volturi.107
