I plopped onto my bed and gazed down at the floor. My day had gone the same as every day. Teased at school, stressed at work, and bored at home.1
My birthday was two weeks ago, I just turned 16. And I had thought that alone might help change things, but it didn't.2
I told my parents that I was ready for a little change, but my Dad kept saying: "Jamie Lynn Carter, whats wrong with things being the same?"3
I wanted some adventure, some excitement. But that seemed a far off wish for a girl living in a town smaller than a city museum that closed down for the night at 6:00 PM.4
I clapped twice to turn off the light in my room. I wasn't going to bother changing into my night-clothes. I rolled onto my back and gazed at the glow-in-the-dark planets and stars that covered my bedroom ceiling.5
I laid there for what seemed like a long time. Then, I saw light start streaming into my room from the backyard outside. I looked out my window. I saw what looked like a disk of light, it was hovering over the ground. Slowly, it was getting bigger, and brighter.6
I hurried out of my room and out the back door of my house. The light was still there, it flickered for a moment, then it got brighter again.7
A smaller gray circle appeared in the center of the light. I was so engrossed in watching this strange phenomenon that I didn't notice a strange force start to pull me forward. 8
When I did notice I tried to back away but couldn't move. My heart leapt into my throat and I was terrified. Within seconds I felt my feet leave the ground and was pulled into the light.9
The next thing I knew, I was in a pile of chairs, shelves, paperwork and other stuff that I didn't bother to try an identify in the dim light.10
"Are you OK?" I head a voice ask. 11
Then the lights came on and I could see I was in some sort of room.12
I saw an older man wearing glasses and what looked like a scientists coat, with the exception that it was brown. Strangely, the man looked very familiar.13
"I think so," I said as he helped me to my feet. I looked around, terrified at what had just happened, "Who are you? Where am I? Why did you bring me here?" I asked.14
"I'm Dr. Samual Spancar," He said, "What are you called?"15
"My name is Jamie," I answered.16
"Well Jamie, I supposed your wondering how you got here," Said Dr. Spancar, as though he hadn't heard my earlier question. "Apparently I made some minor miscalculations when cutting through the subspace barrier..." He went into a long line of scientific babble that I couldn't make heads or tails of.17
"So, where am I exactly?" I interrupted when he had finally taken a breath.18
"Well..." Dr. Spancar said slow, he seemed very hesitant to tell me where I was. I was getting impatient.19
"Well, you've just traveled into another dimension," said Dr. Spancar, "An alternate universe to your own. You're on Thera."20
I jumped from terrified to triple terrified in a microsecond. I had to force myself to breath.21
"Another dimension? how is this possible?" I asked.22
Dr. Spancar showed me what he called a 'Subspace Slicer'. 23
"This is where I make the calculations for cutting through subspace," He explained as he showed me a panel full of colored and variously marked buttons. 24
"And this is the portal," He said, pointing to a huge, circular ring contraption.25
"You can send me back, right?" I asked. This wasn't exactly what I had in mind when I said I wanted adventure.26
"Of course I can," Dr. Spancar replied as he started digging through paperwork and books on the ground, "But please, after you answer a few of my questions."27
Dr. Spancar reminded me of my science teacher, Professor Samuel Spencer. I imagined I would probably find a lot of other similarities like that in this place.28
Dr. Spancar was anxious to ask me about where I cam from, but before he could start asking me questions a strange sounding alarm went off. Dr. Spancar quickly told me to wait until he came back then hurried out of the room.29
I had no intention of just waiting. I hurried out of the room before the automatic door closed.30
A shelf full of books slid over the doorway I had just walked through. The room I had walked into looked like a library or den. There was a globe sitting on an end table by a chair.31
I walked over and studied it, amazed at how similar Thera looked to Earth, but there were some differences. What looked like America, was called Amerigo, and it took up the entire North and South American continent.32
Despite my rather unusual situation, I smiled, this was fascinating.33
The wooden door across the room suddenly burst open and two policemen came barging in with Dr. Spancar close behind them. Their uniforms seemed to be exactly like the ones worn by American policemen back on Earth, with the exception that they were a forrest green color.34
Dr. Spancar seemed a little frantic when he walked in. "Please don't say anything," I heard his voice whisper in my head, "I'll explain everything when they leave."35
The police looked around the room for a minute, one of them was taking notes, then they left, and Dr. Spancar came back into the library.36
"I thought I instructed you to stay in the lab," he said.37
I crossed my arms and looked him in the eye, "You really expected me to stay there?" I asked.38
He sighed, "Thanks at least for not saying anything."39
"You have a load of explaining to do," I said.40
Dr. Spancar sat down in a chair. I sensed this was going to be a long story.41
"I was once one of the most respected scientists in the country," he explained, "Until I started working on this theory of alternate and parallel universes. At first I was written off as a crazy scientist. But then a few said that working with that kind of technology could be devastating as far as damaging the planet, even the fabric of reality itself." 42
He took a breath then continued, "I was officially ordered by the government to shut down my experiments, but I was so close to actually breaking through that I just took my work underground. Now, a few people suspect, and are keeping an eye on me."43
Dr. Spancar stood up and walked over to the globe, "There are so many undiscovered mysteries, unfortunately men are often to frightened to take on the unknown so we are left in darkness," he said as he absentmindedly spun it.44
I still wasn't sure what to think of this whole thing, outside of the fact that I was in the wrong reality.45
"Is this the first time you've been able to cut through the barrier?" I said.46
Dr. Spancar nodded, then grabbed a notebook off the table and opened the secret door that let to his lab, "Well back to the interview so I can send you home."47
In the lab, we began comparing differences and similarities between our two realities.
