The Attic That Is My Soul

I am an attic. It's the first thing that came through my head that actually fit. An attic. The place in the house where everyone puts all the stuff they don't want anymore. The room underneath the roof and above all the other rooms in a house. Or as the dictionary puts it: the part of a building, esp. of a house, directly under a roof; garret. I guess you could say that is what I am... if you wanted to call me part of a house. But I think it can have a deeper meaning.1

An attic is used. Used to store unwanted or unneeded things. Being the doormat friend, as I like to call myself, I am often used to help fix unwanted problems. An attic has no say as to what you put in it. It just sits there and takes it, speechless. Another problem of mine. But an attic is also a very comforting place. It's a place where you can be along to think or to wander. A place of solitude and memories.2

Attics are stock full of secrets and surprises. Some good, some... not so good. There are many odds and ends in attics. Things you can't find in any other room. Things you may not want but don’t have the heart to throw away. Or the things you deeply cherish and don’t want to keep out, in fear that they will be lost or stolen. In a way, that is also me.3

Often attics can be crazy and weird. With random things jutting out at you and no floors. Then, other attics are quite nice and finished. They can be places of fear as well, holding dark secrets. I can be both calm and crazy, like attics. And I can also be scary, but usually only to myself. 4

It is sometimes challenging to get up to an attic and then challenging to get things out of it. It is very hard to get me to trust you, or to get information out of me. There are things that I will hold in my mind forever. Things that will never be said, or even remembered again. Attics hold things like that too, and even when people move from a house, there are always a few things that remain in the hidden crevices of an attic.5

Other rooms can feel superior to the attic. They are more decorated, more organized and more people go into them. But the attic can be so full of wonder, of adventures, and it is closest to the sky. Closest to everything. Closest to its dreams.6

Author notes

I know, it gets sort of depressing at times. But I enjoyed writing it. It was fun. I must say, I am an attic sounds very close to I am an addict. Haha. So yeah... Hope you enjoyed!

This was interesting (in a good way). I like the way you've analysed the attic and how that relates to your personality. Obviously this is for a competition - but it works well as a piece of writing on its own.

I especially like the last paragraph - as that's how I feel sometimes!
