Chp. 29: Mission with Pein 1

I woke up before the sun had risen. I was just about to get up when I heard a knock on my door. I moved the covers aside and let my feet hang off the side of the bed. I yawned and forced myself to get up and walk over to the door. I opened it slowly. Itachi was standing there. “ Yes? “ I said sleepily. I wasn’t fully awake yet. “ Pein’s ready when you are “ he said. “ Oh, okay. Tell him ... tell him I’ll be ready in about an hour “ I said. Itachi didn’t say anything, he just walked away. 2

I closed the door and turned around. Looking at my bed I suddenly realized I should probably take a shower. I groaned and walked into the bathroom. About half an hour later I was out of the shower and drying my hair. I was just about to put my one piece on when I heard another knock on the door. ‘ It’s a good thing I have my shorts and shirt on ‘ I thought as I walked to the door. I opened it, more quickly this time. “ Deidara? What are you doing up so early? “ I asked. “ I wanted to talk to you about Itachi, un “ he answered. I sighed.3

“ Not now, Deidara I have to leave soon “ I said. I started to shut the door, but Deidara put his hand on the door and pushed the door back open. He stepped in and looked outside before he shut the door behind him. I sighed. “ Deid- “ Listen to me, you can’t trust Itachi, yeah “ he said, cutting me off. “ Why not? “ I asked shrugging my shoulders. “ Because he’s evil, that’s why un “ he said. “ Deidara, are you just jealous that I’m spending time with him? “ I asked. “ Of course not, un! “ he shouted in response. 4

“ You are, you’re jealous! “ I said. “ I feel nothing of the sort, yeah “ he said, his arms crossed across his chest and his face turned the other way. 5

“ Well, Deidara. I have to take a shower ... and then I have to leave with Pein to go on a mission “ I said. I started pushing him toward the door. “ So I will see you when I get back “ I said opening the door and shoving him out. Outside in the middle of the village, Pein was getting impatient. “ Deidara! “ he shouted. “ Yes, un “ Deidara answered looking back at him. “ Where’s Rai?! “ he yelled. “ She’s coming “ Itachi said quietly coming out of his room. It was wonder that Pein could hear him, he talked so softly, but yet so sternly. 6

About two minutes later I stepped out of my room. As I shut the door behind me, I noticed Pein was giving me the death glare. I sighed in annoyance. “ Yes, I know, I’m late. I”m sorry Pein “ I apologized. Pein looked irritated now. He despised me for calling him by his real name. He made a mental note to talk to me about that. “ When are you getting back? “ Konan asked him. “ About two weeks “ he said. “ All right “ she answered. They stared into each others eyes for a moment, then Pein broke the stare by looking away. “ You ready? “ he asked me. I wonder if there’s some romance going on between them? 7

“ Rai! “ Pein shouted. I shook my head to snap myself out of it. “ What? Oh, yeah I’m ready “ I answered. “ In your own little world “ I heard Pein mutter as he walked past me. “ Come on “ he grumbled leading the way. I looked back as I followed and saw Itachi. He stood back a ways from the rest. His face seemed more in a trance then normal. I watched as he got smaller and smaller as we got farther away. As we walked down the path, I noticed that Pein had a soft look on his face. “ So ... you and uh ... Konan. Are you guys ... together? “ I asked cautiously. “ What makes you think that?! “ he snapped. I stopped walking. “ Jeez, sorry I asked “ I answered looking away. I ran to catch up to him. “ So about Itachi ... is he like ... nice at all? “ I asked. “ Why do you ask? “ 8

” Just curious “ I said. “ Perhaps ... “ Hearing Pein speak, I turned my head to look at him. “ ... There might be some feelings between the two of you? “ he suggested. I looked away. ‘ Is there? He does seem to be looking at me a lot ’ I thought. I looked back at Pein. He raised an eyebrow. “ Oh! Well I don’t know. I guess I like him a little. He seems okay “ I explained. Changing the subject I said, “ So exactly how long until we find this said fire ninja? “ Pein didn’t answer right away, he just stared forward. I didn’t say anything else, afraid that he might snap at me again. 9

“ The person who sent us on this mission said that the man was headed for the Waterfall Village “ he said. ‘ Wait a minute. The Waterfall Village borders the Leaf Village. Why would he take me on this mission? He must of know that I would try to escape ... I promised. Ooh! I set myself up for that one ’ I thought. I shook my head, disappointed in myself. Suddenly I got an idea. ‘ If I really wanted to I could try and make a run for it. But what if Pein caught me? Would he really extract the TwoTails from my body? That would probably kill me on top of it ’ I thought. 10

I sighed out loud. “ What? “ he asked. “ Oh, nothing. I was just thinking about something “ I answered. “ So if the Waterfall Village borders the Leaf Village, how long will it take for us to get there? “ I asked. “ How long did it take Itachi? A day or so? “ he asked. “ Pein, I was unconscious by the time the ninja attacked us, how should I know?! “I shouted. “ You were attacked? “ he asked. “ Yeah, didn’t Itachi tell you that? “ I asked.“ No, he didn’t “ Pein said glaring at the path as he walked. “ Is he in trouble? Please, I don’t want him to get in trouble because of me! “ I put my hand to my mouth. What did I just say?!11

I just pleaded for the man that kidnaped me from my own village! Pein looked down at me, his face showing amusement. “ You really do like him don’t you? “ he asked, a smirk forming on his face. I looked away, starting to feel my cheeks heat up. “ He’s not in trouble. And I won’t tell either “ he said. “ You won’t tell? “ I repeated confused. “ I won’t tell Itachi that you like him “ he explained. “ I never said that! “ I shouted. Pein let out a chuckle. “ Your color says different “ I put my hand to my cheek. It was red hot.12

Pein started laughing. “ You look like a cherry! “ he said in between laughs. “ Hey, you! “ someone called from in front of us. Pein and I looked up at the same time. “ Let me see some form of identification for the both of you “ a man said. Apparently we were about to cross into the Water Village. “ What did you do? “ I asked, glaring at Pein.“ What do you mean? “ he asked, acting like he had no idea what I was talking about. “ What kind of jutsu did you use to get us here faster? “ I pried. “ Just a teleporting jutsu “ he explained. “ You jerk, how come Itachi doesn’t know that jutsu? “ I asked. “ Because Itachi is an s-rank criminal and a jonin in your perspective, he’s also not the leader of this organization “ Pein replied.13

He started walking into the gates. “ Pein what did you do to the guard?! “ I cried in alarm. The guard was leaning against a stick and seemed to be asleep. “ I don’t want him to remember us “ he answered. Pein walked into the village and had to come back to grab my arm because I was so concerned about the guard. “ Now, we just have to figure out when the old man’s gonna get here “ Pein mumbled as he led me through the village. 14

“ Hey, you there! “ I suddenly felt a burn on my arm. After examining my arm, which was burned by fire, I looked back at the voice. It was an old man.
