Telltale Heart

It's that time of day where the sun is low in the sky, but it's not quite sunset. It's a little warm out, there's a cool breeze, the temperature is perfect. At the top of the park, the kids are playing, their parents are watching.1

Down the stairs is the outdoor amphitheater that we walked past. We went down the dusty trail, the dry vegetation and skittering lizards making us feel as though we're on some sort of hiking adventure, despite the fact that we're in the middle of a city.2

Your hand is a little clammy, but I'm sure mine feels the same way to you. Our arms bump, the drone of our voices is soothing as we talk lightly, just chatting. Still, my heart doesn't seem to realize that there's nothing too extraordinary going on. It's beating twice as fast as normal, the echo of blood rushing in my ears almost drowning you out. I try to convince it that it's just another walk, it's just some time alone. Calm down.3

We walk onto the bridge and you turn to me. I feel the weight of your free hand on the side of my neck, then your lips soft on mine. And I hesitate, new to this, and I lean in for more.4

And my heart is beating: I. Told. You. So.

Author notes

During my jog one day I kept passing by this high school couple that was kissing on the bridge. A freewrite prompt reminded me of it, so now I figure I'll just post it, regardless of it's lack of length.

Fantastic - and a new meaning for the short story. Your descriptions were vivid and lovely. This is a wonderful scene, full of emotions and intensity. I think it stands alone just fine.
