The small hunting party pushed their way through a weak wall of vegetation and stopped in the minuscule clearing on the other side.1
'Where could the...'2
'Frank...'3
'... fool-hardy idiot be?' Private Frank finished, having completed his swearing quietly while the scout rebuked him.4
'I don't know, Frank. Come on, let's go.' This was Sergeant Mackenzie, a battle-weary veteran in his thirtieth year of service. He had specifically requested his position so as to work with a small group of men, and was also granted the privilege of hand-picking his team from the best of the platoon.5
Their quandary had escaped quite handily just hours ago, but he hadn't taken anything with him, so he was unarmed and unsupplied. Unfortunately, he was also untrackable, untraceable, and invisible. The entire battalion had been on the search since dawn, and now it was time to head back to camp before the deadly jungle night fell. The camp would be on double guard tonight, to prevent any killings or raids. Only God knew how many friends the prisoner had waiting in the shadows.6
As the team stepped back into their napalm-made campground, the sounds of the the jungle began a decrescendo to their nighttime acoustics, a bit more bearable for the fresh grunts, the ones that had just arrived in the latest batch of reinforcements. The scout was one of these, but he knew the jungle as well as any of the natives did. In fact, that is what the Sergeant was just stepping up to learn about.7
'Scout, name please.'8
The scout about-faced, turning away from the eerie screechings and groanings of the land and lowering his centuries-old M-16 rifle, the only one still operational. 'Blaise, sir.'9
Mackenzie nodded, then posed his question. 'How is it you know so much about these parts?'10
Blaise grinned menacingly, and even allowed himself a few satisfied laughs as he contemplated releasing his 'secret' to this officer.11
'I've been around a while, chief,' he decided to say. 'Years and years...'12

Heir, I have not heard of the reputation of M-16's for jamming... if they have one, I was not aware of it. However, as I have stated before, Blaise is a great metalsmith, which has allowed him to maintain (and in this case possibly, improve) his weapon at peak performance.
But I'll check into the jamming thing. Thanks for bringing it up. -
You know, I just had a thought...Don't M-16s have a reputation for jamming?
-
Think of it this way, Mack... Would a modern day militia have centuries-old M-16s if they weren't used until the late 1960's?
It *is* in the future. This is a professional, national army, and thus they all use the latest weapons (or still-useful ones like napalm defoliants). However, Blaise likes his M-16 so much that he keeps it, even though he has to hand-make everything for it, including bullets, since the weapon was replaced in 2022. He knows more about his gun than the original designers :-D -
scuse me, maybe they're M-16A2's, not for certain... oh well. anyway, just kidding about the jungle thing, and i agree. but, is this in the future, or the present, cause if it's in the future, they probably wouldn't be using M-16's, unless it's a militia. and it can't be vietnam, because the M-16 wasn't issued until the middle of the war, before that they used
M-14's (very simular to an M-1-carbine)and therefore could not possibly have century old M-16's. -
ah, coolness!!!
I totally agree with your last post with anime characters and all...
He was in Vietnam?! (or is it just me jumping to conclusions again?)
hehe, awesome story, Kash...

Mack: I believe a few centuries in the jungle could disable even an AK-47. I mean, even if the elements didn't get to it, two hundred years would almost certainly involve being dropped, bombed, shot, and otherwise physically impacted, which would deform even the toughest of metals over time. Blaise, however, is an excellent metalsmith, and has kept his working since he got it in Vietnam.
For the CMers: Yes, I intended to set up bare-minimum storyline on this one, just so I could see what you would do with a demon in the military. I mean, most half-demons are found in anime-style fantasies, and I don't like it. Why can't half-demons be found in a realistic setting where they fight with guns instead of magic swords and willpower? And for that matter, do they really have to be limited to an emotionally weak identity-less character just because they're half demon?
I guess it just irks me that anime characters are so easily stereotyped because they're always the same no matter what show. It's like, one person comes up with a good idea, and a dozen others like it and copy it with new names and a different theme song. Like they have no creativity.
Okay I'll shut up now. -
heheheh, nice job kash, a nice begining with lots of room for our little friend Blaise.

Nice! You've managed to get the proverbial wheels turning in (at least) my proverbial brain, and all of your non-CM friends are baffled :-D ! I never would have thought of that sort of character's story being set up quite this way... between the setting and the title, you've definitely given the rest of us something to build on! Good job, as always!

so, is this in the future, or are they some kind of well armed militia, (i'm assuming they're well armed because you suggested they had napalm defoliant, which must be dropped from a plane, which means that either they created this clearing for their own use, or it was the result og an enemy bombing run.) (oh, btw, are you suggesting that a few centuries in the jungle can defeat an M-16, (i believe that technically, we are using
M-16A4's... i think.)) -
centuries old huh? interesting...

I seem to be at a lose of words.
