Paid In Full - Part 12 (Dark-Hunter Inspired)

1

Sitting under a tree and staring out at the large property did nothing to soothe the emotions running through Roan. She had thought anything that could be done to her had, but this touched her on a completely basic level that she’d never really acknowledged. 2

Hurt. Her feelings were hurt, and she wasn’t sure how to soothe the pain without completely destroying something, or a certain surfer. She could just kill something to get back at him, but they were Chthonian…and the police of the gods couldn’t go around killing things just because they felt like it. 3

Okay, they could, but she didn’t have the desire to explain herself to one of her peers if she did. It even boggled the mind to think how Savitar had gotten away with what he had. Then again, he’d simply taken advantage of circumstances and withheld pertinent information all because he wanted to be a jerk. 4

Part of this was her fault, too. Her peers had handed her the task of tracking Labeve, and she’d assumed there was some mystical reason behind if falling to her. She wasn’t powerful enough to seek out, and to break down the walls surrounding certain information. Only Savitar held that power. Then again, if she had absorbed as much energy from defeated gods as he had, she’d be able to bend the Chthonian council to her will, too. 5

The worst part was… he hadn’t lied. If only through her would this mystery person be able to defeat Labeve, then Roan’s hunting of the demon was necessary. Someone that was with her now had to be that person... why else would Savitar mention it. He may have been a jerk, but even he knew better than to mess around with things like this. 6

Rubbing her hands over her face, Roan fought the headache that was forming.  “Tria?” she asked, a moment before pulling Tria from what she was doing. 7

“Something wrong?” Tria asked as she studied the woman’s face.8

Inhaling slowly, Roan let the breath out, then began. “It’s time to pass this on to you,” she said. “You’ve got the desire, the knowledge, and soon the power to take Labeve down.” The speech she had so laboriously written in her mind dissolved into nothing as she returned the other woman’s’ stare. “Oh, to hell with it.” Opening her fingers, she motioned.9

Tria jerked as electricity seemed to course through her. Sounds, smells and light assaulted her, bringing things in to greater focus than she’d ever experienced. It was like the abilities of a Dark-Hunter, only tenfold. As soon as it started, it ended, leaving her panting in exhaustion. “What… was that?” 10

“As my representative, you can invoke my powers,” Roan told her. “Use them as you see fit, but misuse them, and you will not live to see the error or your choices.”11

“Okay,” Tria said slowly, not understanding or believing what just happened. “Why?”12

A sad look crossed Roan’s face. “I’ve been played the fool by someone who masters at manipulation. I have no desire to continue.” With that, she turned away, effectively dismissing Tria. “Paul?”13

The eagle appeared almost instantly. “You summoned?” he asked, sensing the mood and not tempted to push his luck. 14

“Instruct Tria how to use magick, then find and destroy Labeve.”15

Nodding a small acknowledgement, he placed a hand on Tria before she could object, and phased them both away from the sullen goddess.16

“What happened to her?” he asked as soon as they appeared in a large room. 17

“Savitar, I think.”18

“Ah.”19

“That’s it?”20

Paul scoffed. “She’s a goddess, he’s a god. They can sort it out themselves.” Rubbing his hands together, he gave her a good once over. “All right, baby-cakes, let’s see what you got.”21

Crumbs fell on her expanding stomach as Angie took a bite from the cake in front of her. Polishing it off quickly, she dabbed at the remnant on the plate, stopping when she heard a small chuckle from across the table. 24

Dom had Amy over one shoulder as he gently tapped her back, the bottle on the table in front of him. “There’s more cake,” he said gently. “Have all you want.” 25

“Too sweet,” Angie said as she stood and walked to put the plate in the sink, pausing long enough to drag her finger over the top of the cake. Placing the large amount of frosting in her mouth, she returned to the table. “Mmm. Great cake. What’s for dessert?”26

A feeling passed through Dom, and he studied the table for a moment before looking back at her. 27

“What?” Angie asked, worried. 28

“Hm?” 29

“You’ve got that funky precognition look in your eyes.” 30

“It’s nothing,” he told her. “Just company.”31

“Of the evil kind?”32

He considered for a moment. “Well…” Stopping at the look that she gave him, he reconsidered telling her. “Not evil, no. Not overly friendly, either, but not here to harm you or the baby.”
33

Nodding, Angie stood and reached for Amy. “I’ll take her upstairs, and get her settled in bed. Then maybe take a nap myself.”34

“Sounds good,” he said as he passed Amy over. 35

“And you can tell this company to take a flying fuck.”36

“What?!” he asked, amazed at the language that came from her. 37

“No,” Angie said, changing her mind. “On second thought, I’ll tell whoever it is to fuck off.” She paused. “Uh, it’s not Ash, right?”38

“Nope.”39

Nodding in decision, she turned and calmly walked out of the kitchen, pausing long enough to grab another large dollop of frosting from the cake.
40

Cleaning up slightly, Dom put a few things away, sighing at the mistreated cake before putting it in the fridge. Closing the door, he opened it again, ran his finger over the top of the cake, then pushed the door shut. 41

Boredom would be the one word that described how Savitar felt at the moment. That, and annoyance. The waves were not cooperating, and as he stared up at the sky while the water gently rocked the surfboard, he was passing the time by forcing himself not to contact Aiden. 44

Knowing that she was safe made him feel relaxed, but he of all people knew just how fast safety faded. Aiden, despite her powers and obvious bravery, needed someone to watch her back…especially with what was coming. Savitar knew that he had to step back for a while in this whole deal, since his presence would most likely do more harm than good… and he hated that. 45

He couldn’t see his own future until it was set in motion, which was why he so often looked at hers. If Aiden’s was fine, then his was too…up to a point. Then again, all it would take would be her to change one little thing, and it could spiral his own well-planned future out of control. 46

He couldn’t change things without causing a massive screw up, and had long ago stopped trying. It was better to just surf those waves when they came at him, and hope that they didn’t slam him off the board and conk him over the head with it a few dozen times.47

Which was why he tended to circumvent that little shortcoming by subtly manipulating Aiden’s future. It had taken him a while to realize that as long as she lived, their futures were somehow linked. When they ceased to be a couple, they would still influence each other in the little things that ended up making the largest impacts. 48

She needed to be kept safe, yes… and the annoyance at who he could actually trust was starting to piss him off. Ash was far too busy with his own soon to happen issues, which would also involve Simi. There was always Takeshi, whom Savitar knew would gladly do it if he asked…but that would bring Aiden even further in to the circle of Chthonian, and that was something Savitar didn’t want to do. Fury would be finding out his own relevance in the universe fairly soon, and there wasn’t another Were that he knew Aiden would trust.49

No, wait. Sitting up on the surfboard as the perfect being came to mind, he smiled slightly.50

~~~~~~~~~~~~51
~~~~~~~~~~~~52

“You’re doing it all wrong.”53

Turning to glare, Tria gave Paul a lethal look before turning back to the large ceramic platter on the table. “It’s hard to concentrate with you barking at me.”54

“Eagles do not bark,” he replied evenly. 55

“Screeching, then.”56

“Much better.” He stopped with a sigh. “Look at the platter… and then imagine it in your hands.”57

“I’m doing that,” she said through clenched teeth. Annoyed at his presence, she imagined the serving plate smashing into his head, and smiled to herself. Before she knew it, the platter flew across the space between her and the table, then turned suddenly, stopping only when it slammed into Paul’s head. 58

“Sweet mother,” he hissed as his hands automatically went to his head. Stepping back, he gave her a glare that would have frightened the heartiest of souls, then bent over slightly in pain. “Nice shot, but a little warning next time would be appreciated.” 59

“Sorry?” Tria offered. “You were pissing me off, and the next thing I knew…” She trailed off with a shrug.60

“You damn near took my head off.”61

Rolling her eyes as his dramatics, she approached. “Let me see,” she said, taking her hands in his and lowering them. A large scrape was already bruising on his forehead, while blood trickled from a cut just past his hairline. “I really nailed you.”62

“No shit,” he said pulling his hands out of hers. “Now heal it.”63

“What?”64

“Part of your powers should include the ability to heal. Just place your hand on it, and imagine it healed.” Grabbing her hand as she reached, he gave her a searing look. “Just don’t explode my brain or something equally stupid.”65

“I’ll try to refrain.” Raising her released hands, she placed one of the bruise, and the other on the cut, muttering and apology as he hissed lightly. Closing her eyes, she tried to feel where any powers would be that she could use. With her Dark-Hunter power or fire, it had been ingrained in her so that it was as easy as breathing. This, though, was harder than she thought it would be.66

“You’re trying too hard,” he whispered. “Relax.”67

“I’m trying.” 68

“No you’re not. You’re too tense, and you’re comparing this power with your Hunter power, which, if you fry my hair, I’ll be pissed.” He watched the frustration play over her face as she tried to focus and relax. His eyes fell to her lips as she licked them gently, and he was half-tempted to kiss them just to see how she’d react. What the fuck? 69

Taking a step back from her, Paul exhaled as she opened her eyes in confusion. “We’ll work on healing later,” he said lamely. “Uh, try moving things around again, but not at me.” 70

“Okay,” she said, confused. “You all right?”71

”Just, uh…” he motioned to his head. “Uh, little headache, I’ll be fine.” He took a further step back. “Um, I’m going to get this taken care of, and I’ll be back in a couple minutes. Maybe you can kick back with a tea, vodka, bubble bath or something and relax.”
72

Staring as he vanished, Tria shook her head at his attitude. 73

Appearing outside the palace, Paul shook his head to clear it. “Fuck,” he whispered as he raised a hand to his head to heal his wounds. Most times he had to heal normally, but small cuts and scrapes were no big deal. 74

No, the big deal was the thought he’d entertained just a minute ago. He’d never, in his entire existence, ever considered being with a human…although, technically Tria wasn’t really a human any longer. That didn’t help with the confusion. 75

“Okay,” he said as he started walking, “it’s been a couple weeks since you’ve been with someone, and you’re just horny. Yeah, that’s it. Get that taken care of, then come back. Yeah.” 76

Looking around when he didn’t move, he sighed and shook his head. “You’re playing with fire, eagle. Literally.” 77

Tria looked as he appeared again. 78

“Change of plans,” he said, improvising as he went along. “The best training always happens in the field, and that’s what we’re going to do with you.” 79

She stared at him, noticing with her new powers that he seemed a little nervous. “You all right?” she asked. “You seem nervous.”80

“Let me smack you with a platter and we’ll see how you feel.”81

“Point taken.” Stepping forward, she smiled lightly. “So, where’s the ‘field’ I’ll be training in?”82

~~~~~~~~~~~~83
~~~~~~~~~~~~84

Trees stretched far ahead as a lone eagle flew through the branches. Spotting a tall figure that appeared far below, the eagle changed direction, and headed for the intruder. Stopping a few feet away, the bird changed in to a tall good-looking human male who looked to be around forty. He stood as clothing appeared on his body and ran a hand through short auburn hair. 85

“Eagle,” Savitar said.86

“Savitar,” came the wary reply.87

“You need to talk to Aiden.” 88

“She’ll never talk to me.”89

“Probably,” Savitar agreed. 90

“She’ll hate me.”91

“Most likely.”92

The man turned to look at him. “I put everything on the line to stay away,” he said. “I lost everything.”93

“And you’re to be commended on that,” Savitar replied. “But now’s the time to stop running and face the past.” 94

“Why now?”95

“Because Aiden needs you.” Savitar gave him a hard stare. “And because she needs someone to make sure she’s safe from things that are coming.”96

“What’s coming?”97

“The future.”98

Giving a small shake of his head at the vague answers, he leaned back. “I’m quite content avoiding everything, so… I think I’ll pass.”99

“Let me put this another way,” Savitar said easily. “You’re going to do this, or I’m going to kill you.”100

“Well,” the man said, not missing a beat, “why didn’t you say so in the first place.”101

“Thought it was kind of obvious.”102

~~~~~~~~~~~~103
~~~~~~~~~~~~104

Usually his walks through his property lead him nowhere in particular, but this time Dom had a specific destination in mind. Not that he actually knew where it was, but he trusted his instincts to lead him there. 105

Walking past the basketball court, Dom stopped as a man and woman appeared not too far away. Shaking his head at the ‘company’, he let out an annoyed breath. Giving Tria a studied look, he approached. “What do you want, and why are you bringing strangers on my property?”106

Ignoring the anger, Paul gave the man a good once over. “You killed my brothers?” he asked in disbelief. He looked at Tria. “This is a joke, right?”107

“Nope.” Tria took a step back to get a head start on ducking for cover in case Dom flipped at having the eagle on his property. She glanced at Dom’s confused face. “This is an associate of mine, Dom,” she began. “Paul Kalenta. Youngest brother of Liam and Zane Kalenta.” She could tell the moment the names registered with Dom, and took an extra step back. 108

“Such a sterling pedigree,” Dom said in a forced tone. “And how thoughtful of you to actually hand him the key to my property. Why Tria, I do believe you’ve outdone yourself this time. I bid you a good day.” Turning, he walked away.109

Raising an eyebrow at the retreating back, Paul looked at Tria. “What’d he do? Kill them with boring kindness.” Moving quickly, he barely dodged a knife that came sailing at him at chest height. 110

“Actually, it was a knife,” Dom said as he held another blade up. “That little toss satisfy your morbid curiosity?”111

”Quite nicely yes, thank you.” Walking to the blade, he picked it up carefully, then smiled before flinging it back from where it came. He gave an incredulous stare as Dom turned, avoiding the knife, and reached out with a hand as it passed, grabbing it by the hilt. “Oh, come on!” Paul said. “No human could pull that off!”
112

“Thousand plus years of practice, eagle,” Dom said with a smirk as he placed the knives back in hidden holsters. The last thing he wanted was for Angie to see him with them. She tended to think that he gave up carrying any sort of weapon when he turned human. “What do you want?”113

Satisfied that most of the testosterone had been trotted out, then pulled back in, Tria joined the men again. “It’s obvious that Angie will be Labeve’s next target.”114

“Figured as much,” Dom said darkly. “It would be preferred if you actually caught and stopped her before she finds some way on to the property.”115

“How good’s your security?” Paul asked.116

“Unless someone is invited, then they’re not getting on the grounds.” He looked at Paul. “Little after-thought thanks to your brothers.”117

“I’m sure they appreciate the gesture,” Paul returned snidely. 118

“Want to get the chance to ask them?”119

Tria didn’t miss the threat in that question, although Paul merely snorted in amusement and let it slide. “What we’d like,” she said, getting attention back to her, “is to maybe be able to stay here for a day or so to get a feel…for…” she trailed off as Dom shook his head. “Why not?”120

”You want me to let the brother of two eagles I killed stay in the house where they died?”
121

Sighing, Paul shoved his regular sarcasm down for a few moments. “Look… I hated my brothers, and they hated me. They’re dead, and I’m glad. In fact, I’m rather jealous that you got to do the deed and rob me of the chance of doing it myself. In fact, if I get to see where they died, I may just be overcome with joy and erect a statue in your honor so that-“122

“Shut up,” Dom ordered. “Dysfunctional family issues aside, I just don’t like the idea of two beings in my house that may or may not have ulterior motives.”123

“We don’t.”124

Dom looked at Tria. “The eagle I may believe, but I honestly don’t know if I can trust you.”125

“I understand,” she said. 126

“And I doubt Angie would want either of you here.”127

“Can we ask?”128

“By all means,” Dom said, smiling lightly. 129

Placing a hand on Tria’s arm as she started towards the house, Paul stopped her. “Wait,” he said slowly as he stared at Dom. “Something’s not right.”130

Tensing, Tria formed a fireball in her hand and looked around. “What?”131

“Fuck sakes, Tria,” Dom hissed as he grimaced. “Not the best way to convince me to let you stay.”132

“Sorry,” Tria apologized as she extinguished the blaze. “What’s not right?”133

Paul stared at Dom like he was studying a lab experiment. Filing away the man’s apparent fear of fire, he went back to the original concern. “Your ex-Dark-Hunter is looking forward to what this Angie will say when you ask her.”134

“True,” Dom admitted, trying to shake the fear that he had at the fire. He’d been slowly attempting to overcome that little phobia of his, although at times when it caught him off guard, he couldn’t stop the anxiety from surfacing. “Her hormones are giving her a roller coaster of moods, and it’ll be quite interesting to see what she throws at you… literally.”135

Laughing slightly, Paul shook his head. “I think I may just like you.” 136

“Imagine my relief.”137

~~~~~~~~~~~~138
~~~~~~~~~~~~139

Turning slowly at a sensation she hadn’t felt in over one hundred years, Aiden traded astonished stares with the man across the bar that was also a Were sanctuary. She had assumed he’d died when her mother had, but really wasn’t surprised to find out that he hadn’t.

Tensing as he made his way slowly to her, she stayed where she was and waited. He looked barely older than forty, but she knew that he was hovering around the five hundred age range.

“Aiden?” he asked hesitantly.

She nodded, not really knowing what to say our how to proceed. The thought of throwing herself at him for a hug crossed her mind, but those old emotions of anger she felt towards him beat that feeling to the surface.

Turning, she walked away, not stopping until a hand landed on her arm and she looked up at him. “I don’t want to talk to you,” she said.

“I understand,” he replied. “Can I at least explain before you shut me out for eternity?”

“No.”

“Can I explain why I’m here?”

“No.”

“Savitar thought that I-“

That stopped her in her tracks. “He knew?” she demanded, then wondered why she even assumed that he didn’t. The god knew all. Which begged the question of why he’d never told her about it. Then again, she hadn’t really asked, and Savitar was notorious for not offering information. “Just, go away.”

Cursing to himself, he hurried to step in front of her. “Listen here, young lady,” he said sternly. “I’m not sure what you’ve been doing since we last met, but you will not address me in that tone.”

Gaping at him, Aiden shook her head slightly in disbelief. “Of all the condescending, annoying, arrogant-“ Stopping with a light growl, she took a step to the side and walked past him.

A shape across the room caught her eye and she sighed. Just when this night couldn’t get any worse, in walks Fury. The wolf always did have an odd sense of timing. Walking up to her slowly, his eyes were pinned to the man behind her, and she could feel the animosity rise between the two.

“Hey, Aiden,” Fury said slowly, his attention nowhere near her. “How’s things?”

“Get lost, wolf,” the man said, which elicited a growl from Fury.

“Sanctuary rules,” Aiden reminded both of them, looking around as more than a few people were either staring with interest, or moving out of the way of a fight they thought was coming. More than a few were even laying down bets. That was all she needed, to be caught in the middle of a fight with a wolf and an eagle… it would be the cherry on the top of the soda of life.

“Who’s this?” the man asked.

“A friend of mine,” Aiden said, enjoying the shock that rolled off him.

“That explains who I am,” Fury said. “But who’s the old dude?” He smiled as the glare directed at him intensified.

“This,” Aiden said with a sigh. “Is Adlar Falconidae.” 140

~~~~~~~~~~~~141
~~~~~~~~~~~~142

Giving Dom a confused look, Angie raised herself to sit on the bed. “Who?” she asked slowly. 143

“Tria.”144

“The fire one?” She sighed as he nodded. Standing, she put her hand on Dom’s arm to help her up. “Since you obviously didn’t tell them to fuck off, let’s hear what she has to say.”145

“Yes, dear.”146

“Don’t yes dear me,” she said, pausing outside of Amy’s room so she could take a step in and check on her. “I’ve been thinking,” she said as they walked out of the room. “Maybe we need someone to look after Amy until after our son is born.”147

“I can take care of-“ Dom stopped as she looked at him. “What I mean is, I’d like to hear your reasoning behind that suggestion.”148

“You’re learning,” she said, giving him a smile. “I know you can protect us better than any human can, but there could come a time when you’d have to choose between me, or Amy.”149

“No choice,” he said. 150

“Exactly. Save me, and Amy could die. Save Amy, and you’d be burying another wife.” Angie took two steps before she realized that Dom had stopped walking. Turning, she caught an indescribable look on his face for a brief moment before it turned neutral. “Sorry,” she said, going back to him. Raising a hand, she caressed the side of his face. “I didn’t mean to sound so flippant.” 151

“A bodyguard for Amy,” he said, not wanting to get into a discussion about loosing anyone. 152

“Yeah,” Angie whispered, forcing the rest of the apology away. She hadn’t meant to call into question his ability to protect, and definitely hadn’t meant to imply that any shortcoming had lead to the loss of his first family. “A nanny, bodyguard, whatever.”153

“They’d have to live here,” he said slowly, his mind already spinning though the limited number of people that could be considered. The preferred option would be a Were-Hunter, or some other being with the ability to simply vanish with Amy, and hopefully Angie, in case of trouble. Wondering if that was what the pair downstairs was here for, he fell in to silence as he considered.154

Continuing down the steps, they stopped as both Tria and Paul stood from their respective seats. Pursing her lips, Angie looked at the couple, then walked past them. “Tria, I want to talk to you.” 155

Grimacing slightly, and scowling at the smirk Paul gave her, she followed Angie in to the kitchen. Paul turned his attention back to Dom, who was giving him such an intense stare that he felt like punching him so he’d stop. 156

Looking around, his eyes fell on a table by a bay window. “You play?” Paul said, nodding to the chessboard.157

“Used to,” Dom replied as he continued to stare. Since Craig’s death, he had avoided the chessboard. One day he’d be able to put it away, but not yet. 158

“So,” Paul said slowly. “Your wife give us permission?”159

“Fiancée,” Dom corrected him. “And sort of kind of, but not really.” 160

“Okay,” Paul replied with a shrug. Vagueness was commonplace in his world, especially since he started dealing with Roan and other assorted immortals. “But, if that morphs to a yes?”161

“Why are you doing this?”162

“Doing what?”163

“Hunting Labeve.”164

Paul gave him an evaluating stare. “Because she has to be stopped.”165

“The main thing is the safety of Angie, the baby and Amy,” Dom said, satisfied with his answer. “Keep Angie safe, and the baby’s safe. Keep Amy safe, and it preserves some timeline thing. Promise me that regardless what happens to me, you’ll protect them.”166

Paul stared for a moment as he felt something foreign in his chest. Not being familiar with ‘love’, it took him a moment to realize that was what he was witnessing. The human in front of him was willing to lay everything on the line to keep three people safe…and a part of Paul was envious of that. “I’ll do my best.”167

“That’s all I can ask,” Dom said. He paused, then motioned to the bottom of the steps. “That’s where your brothers died. I’d appreciate any statues not be too garish, and preferably kept out of the way.”168

Smiling in amusement, Paul watched as he left, then slowly turned to the steps again. Walking over, he crouched, feeling the floor beneath his fingers as his eyes closed. “Tria?”169

She appeared behind him, blinking in surprise as his position. “What are you doing?”170

“Let me see your memories of that night,” he whispered. 171

“No.”172

“I need them.”173

“You’re one sick bastard,” she responded, turning away. 174

“Please?” 175

Stopping at the word, she slowly looked at him. Sighing, she remembered as best she could, and let the memories flow. Watching as Paul stiffened slightly, then lowered so he could sit on the floor, she wondered what could be accomplished by him knowing the details. A part of her felt sorry for him that he felt the need to see it. 176

Grimacing as he saw Tria’s recollection of the event, his bare tolerance of Dom morphed into a respect at the other man’s abilities. No wonder he’d been able to survive over one thousand years of hunting things that went bump in the night. He was one ‘tough mother’ that knew what was needed to get something done, and wasn’t afraid to shy away from doing it. 177

“Damn,” he whispered as Tria pulled her memories away. That could have been me. Exhaling at his luck at pulling out of the hunt for Aiden when he had, he stood and turned. “Thanks,” he said. “I have a question.”178

“Why doesn’t that surprise me.”179

“He saved your life,” Paul said, referring to the near beheading in the kitchen. “So why’s there this palpable animosity between you two?”180

“I slammed his ass to the ground a couple times with a few fireballs.”181

Paul considered the words, then shrugged. “Fair enough.” He looked around. “You know the house better than I do, so where would the best place be to grab a room and get down to business?”182

“I beg your pardon?” Tria asked in an arctic tone.183

“My, my, my, your mind is in the absolute gutter today, isn’t it.” Shaking his head, he tried to hide the smile that he had. Wording things a certain way to get a rise out of her was his current favorite form of entertainment, and so far she was naively playing along. “Why don’t you phase us both to the kitchen, then whip up some burgers, pizza, or something. Think of it as part of your training.”184

“You’re a jerk.”185

“You’re very astute,” he agreed. 186

    Aw, geeze. Now I feel sorry for Roan.

    Savitar, too. Come here, let Cryptic make it all better

    the bit with the platter. Too funny. Oh, and me likes Paul getting more parts in this story. His and Tria's banter is nicely written.

    Okay... whose the newest eagle? Interesting.

    Does Paul get along with no one? Hasn't even known Dm for a minute and already pissed hiim off.
