To Kill a Heart - Prologue

Have you ever loved someone who had no idea how you felt? I have. Its not fun. I made the stupidest mistake a girl could make, I fell in love with my best friend.1

Yeah, he got me alright. He got me and he didn't even know it. I met Apolo in my first year of high school. He was one of those guys that you fall for straight away. Then he becomes your best friend and you can talk to him anything and everything, anything that is, except the fact that I was in love with him. 2

He called me Jess, only when we were alone though, and I called him Polo. It was a pet name, he absolutely refused to let anyone other than his father and I use it. To me it was very special, almost like it had some sort of secret meaning that no one else knew.3

He was incredibly good looking, His light brown hair was cut close to his head, but long enough to spike, his eyes, oh his eyes, they had to be my favorite feature. Almond shaped, with a tint of green but mostly brown. Simply beautiful.4

To say that I was any more to him then a friend would be a lie. He considered me as one of his closest friends, but that was it. I knew I was just one of the guys. I knew that he would never see me as I was. Despite that, I tried so hard to get him to notice me, but no matter what I did I always seemed to escape his gaze. I even wore a miniskirt to school once. I got grounded for a week, because the Principal sent me home for the day, telling me to dress appropriately. 5

My long brown hair, and deep green eyes held no appeal for him. I had a few boyfriends of my own, but they were always jealous of the time I spent with Apolo. If any of them ever noticed the attraction I had for him, they never said anything.              6

Apolo had two talents, two things he did better than anyone I knew; One was skating, which he did with a grace and beauty that no one could have imitated if they tried, and the other? The other was charming any girl he wanted. Of course the girls he wanted were, for lake of a better word, perfect. Blond hair, blue eyes, tiny waists, and beautiful faces that seemed to say, Look at me. I was always repulsed at his choice of girls.7

He would call me up at nights to complain about the antics of his latest blonde. I would joke with him telling him he needed a brunette. He would laughed and say "Like you?"8

"Yeah like me." I would joke back, or at least I let him think I was joking. Poor Apolo he never did get a clue.9

Time spent with Apolo was time that went by quickly, too quickly. I hated having to go home after having dinner with him and his dad. Once Yuki confronted me about my interest in Apolo. I begged him not to tell, and he agreed, only after telling me that it would be better if Apolo knew how I felt. "Easier said than done." I told him10

You might think that I'm some silly girl, with a high school crush, but you'd be wrong.  It wasn't a crush. It was love, and it was my downfall. That's why I'm putting this down on paper, so that no one will make my mistake. 11

My Name is Jessica Blancett and this is my story.12
