PHYSICAL APPEARANCES (eyes, hair, height, distinguishing marks) - Vanya has blond hair that falls to his mid-back and green eyes. He is six feet tall and pale skinned (more so than his countrymen from a- the Cambronese blood in his family, and b- all the time he spends indoors).4

PERSONALITY - If Vanya’s personality had to be summed up in a single word it would be ‘love’. Vanya loves deeply and frequently, friends, lovers, his work, life, everything, basically. He usually portrays a calm demeanour, though he does get to be quite playful as well when around good friends. He can also be quite needy, requiring a lot of attention, and usually cuddles to go with it. He has the tendency to get so caught up in his work that he will forget to eat or sleep unless reminded.5

BACKGROUND - Vanya was born in Leca, a small farming town in the south of Quirion, near lake country. He came to Leib to study mage craft when he was ten as the youngest student the school had accepted in its history. His official majors were theory and elementals, but Vanya’s thirst for knowledge led him to accumulate knowledge on all aspects of magic, and he mixes them unrepentantly in his experiments.
After his nine years of schooling Vanya was apprenticed to the Head Mage and for the next three years he worked with the brightest minds the country had to offer, until only he was surprised when he was named the Head Mage’s replacement when he retired in 733.
Vanya remained Head Mage for the next twelve years, and during that time Quirion had two wars and Vanya suffered from many upheavals in his personal life, including his best friend and lover being missing, presumed dead, for the entire four years of Monak’s Rising (739-742).
Vanya remained in the palace after his retirement, to give support to his successor (his own apprentice, Tybolt Zaindis) and his King and close friend, Macias Kaisa.
His life remains relatively quiet for the next eight years until one of his lovers, Azeriel Ferris, is offered the opportunity to be a co-owner of a horse farm along the Quirion-Maresca border, which he accepts, moving himself, Vanya, and their two other lovers (Aiello Hallam and Abassi Diandra) to the farm (called Dawn Armouries).6

LIKES/DISLIKES - Vanya likes most things but some of his favourites include his lovers, cooking, and his mage craft. Vanya is perfectly content to be the ‘home-maker’ for his boys, though Abassi usually insists on doing most of the cleaning while Vanya cooks. The kitchen is Vanya’s domain, however, and nobody touches anything in there without Vanya’s permission. Vanya’s life’s passion however, is his work with magic. Vanya is widely recognized as the mage of his time, and some even argue that he is the most influential and innovated mage in history. Some of Vanya’s more wide-spread inventions include the shower and stove, which debut his revolutionary use of elemental-pacts.
Vanya’s dislikes are few but intense. He hates to be alone, and at one particularly dark point in his life shortly following Monak’s Uprising he attempted suicide for just that reason. Vanya’s deep love of his friends leads him to an intense hatred for those who would harm them, and he has no compunctions about being utterly ruthless in their defence. His strength and experiences in the wars mean that he is very capable of being as ruthless as he wants, as well.7

GOALS - For a long time Vanya’s only goals were to protect his friends and country, and to see them happy. However as Vanya has aged his goal has shifted to pushing the boundaries of known magic as far as he can. The desire to see his friends and family is happy is something that never changes though.8

ABILITIES - Vanya is a mage through and through. Outside of his magic he has no really useful skills (besides cooking, but Vanya doesn’t really consider that countable). When one includes his magic, however, Vanya becomes incredibly versatile and very powerful. Some speculate that his power comes from learning the basics so young, but the Academy has declared testing too dangerous to prove this theory. No matter where his power comes from, however, no one can doubt that it is Vanya’s thirst for knowledge that made him learn all he could in all schools of magic, instead of just the ones he was majoring in. This incredible breadth of knowledge means that he can find something he can do for every situation.9

STRENGTHS - Once again, Vanya’s magic is his greatest strength. However, if one were to examine other parts of his life and personality, one would see that he has great strengths of character. Once Vanya gives someone his love he does not take it away, he is a very constant lover and on more than one occasion he has defended a lover from true accusations, or given support long past the breaking point of others. In return, Vanya’s friends and lovers tend to be equally as supportive of him (though he seldom accepts their support gracefully).10

WEAKNESSES - On the flipside, the depth of love that Vanya feels for people requires a lot of attention. He needs to be cuddled and held, a night with no one in his bed is a night that Vanya spends working. More than once a lover’s need to back away from the relationship for a time has precipitated a breakdown in Vanya. He will also overwork himself with almost no thought whatsoever, draining himself so thoroughly that it requires days in bed for him to recover. Additionally, he has virtually no ability when it comes to physical skills.11

OTHER - Vanya has a very strong relationship with three men. He dated Azeriel Ferris during his school days while the boy was in Guard training, but due to certain circumstances their relationship broke off for nearly a decade at the time of their graduation. Monak’s Uprising sees them returning to one another, for a more permanent relationship. Azeriel’s relationship with Vanya’s is the most rocky, because he dislikes the presence of the other two men (most of the time).
Abassi Diandra was Vanya’s first friend in school, and in the beginning their relationship was merely experimentation and friends-with-benefits than actual lovers. After they graduated however, their relationship deepened, despite Abassi having joined the Guard and subsequently spending ten months of the year on the Perimeter. For eight years the two struggled with their (open) relationship, until Abassi agreed in 738 that he would leave the military and stay with Vanya. Tragically, however, Abassi’s last tour of duty marked the beginning of Monak’s Uprising, and Abassi went missing, and was presumed dead. When he was returned to Leib four years later, Vanya took up the difficult task of helping his dear friend recover.
Vanya’s final lover, Aiello Hallam, was a relationship that Vanya originally pursued to pass the time between Abassi’s visits, however it developed into a very deep and lasting connection. His relationship with Aiello is definitely the least demanding of Vanya’s relationships, as Aiello has said on numerous occasions that he is willing to do whatever Vanya needs, so that he can remain in Vanya’s life.
