I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see bad times today. 1
Don't go around tonight.
Well it's bound to take your life.
There's a bad moon on the rise. 2
Creedence Clearwater Revival 3
Chapter Two 4
That was disturbing tonight, thought Lucas. He had no idea what the hell Jenna’s father was talking about. He sat slouched in a lawn chair in front of his fireplace next to the river. 5
It was at least midnight. Earlier he thought about looking for Jenna, but just decided for right now to stay away. Her
Father did not seem like the understanding type. Closing his eyes he felt the breeze on his face. He felt tired. He was starting to drift off and then suddenly he was running fast through the woods, seeing things he never noticed before. Smells were assaulting his senses. He was looking for someone. He was looking for Jenna! His eyes snapped open and he was sitting in the lawn chair.
Jesus, he thought to himself, this has been one weird night. And then she was there. 6
Through the flames of the fire he saw Jenna standing on the other side of the fireplace holding a book. He sat up straight peering through the rising flames. 7
Jenna was just standing there staring at him. Then she spoke, “Will you? Will you, hurt me, Lucas?” she asked softly, almost tearfully. Standing up he rounded the fire coming close to her. 8
“Not now, not ever.” he said. Then, wrapping his arm about her, he walked her back to the chairs. He sat Jenna down and took a seat next to her. He sat looking at her thinking she was still beautiful, tears and all. 9
“Jenna, what was your father talking about tonight? What were you talking about? I didn’t understand any of it.” Lucas asked her.
“I am from an old family, Lucas, full of history, full of lore. There are legends behind my family. Some true, some not. My father, he is ancient in his ways. I have brought you something, Lucas. It is the history of all that we
are, you and I.” and she lifted the old worn leather bound book she had been carrying. Lucas took the book from her looking at it. The book was large and quite thick. Lucas needed two hands to hold it. On the worn brown cover was just an embossed image of the moon shinning down on an altar standing alone in
an open glade surrounded by trees. 10
He looked at the book then back up at Jenna. “I don’t understand, Jenna.” he said. Jenna smiled through tears. 11
“I know you don’t. I know, but it’s important that you do. So you must read, Lothario, and when you are done, I will answer all your questions that I am able to.” she whispered, as if afraid of ears that could be out there in the dark. 12
“Lothario?” he asked, raising his eye brows in a quizzical look. Regaining her composer Jenna tilted her head while shrugging her shoulders. 13
“Just read it and all will become clear. I’ll sit here with you. It’s a beautiful night and our camp fire was interrupted.” 14
“Now? You want me to read this now?” 15
Jenna sat looking at him and he knew he would do whatever she asked of him. He took a deep breath and opened the book. Suddenly he felt her hand on his.
Looking at her she seemed to be scanning the surrounding darkness. Her emerald green eyes were catching the light from the fire and glowing. Her back was stiff and straight. “Wait.” was all she said, then she raised her face up to the breeze and sniffed, once, then twice, and then she turned toward the road. 16
“What are you doing here?” Jenna snarled into the dark towards the road. “You are not welcomed.” 17
“Why don’t we let Lucas decide if I’m welcomed.” a familiar voice said from the dark. 18
Jenna moved from out of the light of the fire as a figure emerged from the pitch dark of the road. Lucas, just standing there, was stunned to see Tamar. 19
“Hello, Jenna.” Tamar said, stepping up to the edge of the road stopping just before the grass. 20
“Tamar.” was Jenna’s only reply and it wasn’t a welcome. Jenna stepped up to the edge of the grass facing her. “What do you want here?” 21
“Same thing you do, Jenna, though I think I already had a little more then you have.” Tamar answered her as the right corner of her upper lip curled in a smile. 22
Jenna glanced quickly from Tamar to Lucas in complete surprise then regained her composer as she stepped towards the girl standing in the road. “You bitch! I’ll skin you right here where you stand.” she growled. 23
“Tut, tut, not in front of the semi-human, princess.” Tamar said. “Besides, he’s not one of you anyway. He belongs to us. So, my dear girl, the question is what are you doing here?” 24
That was when Lucas, who had been just standing by listening, could take no more. 25
“What the hell is everyone talking about? Jenna? Tamar? Huh? Your father acted like he knew me or something about me. Now you two are talking in code or something. Someone tell me what is going on!” he said almost pleading at the end. 26
Jenna and Tamar just looked at him and then their attention was drawn back to each other. Jenna stepped out into the road. 27
“Shall we take a walk Tamar?” she asked. 28
“Oh yes, I think so, Lupa. This has been a long time coming.” Tamar answered.
Then both girls turned to Lucas and said, “Lucas, stay here!”, and then they moved off into the darkness out of Lucas’s sight. He strained trying to see and thought he was beginning to cut into the blackness when he heard growling and then an explosion of sound like two dogs fighting, snarling and barking. There
were sounds of large bodies slamming against each other and teeth gnashing, then suddenly a piercing howl of pain followed by a shriek. He thought he heard the sound of a body crashing through the bushes away from him. He stood there, silence reigning around him. His eyes were feeling the strain of trying to see through the night. He could just make out a figure coming towards him. It was just a dark shape, but began to take form. 29
He breathed a sigh of relief as Jenna emerged from the surrounding blackness.
Her hair was all amiss and there was a scratch on her cheek running from just under her ear down to the side of her chin. One strap of her tank was top torn and hanging down. 30
“Jesus.” Lucas exclaimed, and rushed forward and helped her to the chair she had been sitting in. “What just happened? Where’s Tamar? Did you guys just get attacked by dogs?” 31
Jenna just smiled wearily and sat down. She brushed the back of her hand against Lucas’s cheek. 32
“I knew all those years ago when I first saw you through the amorist eye we were destined, Lothario. We would always be as one. I know you say we are young, but I have an old spirit, as you do. I am ancient. My kind and you come from
the same lineage. We are children of the night. We worship the everlasting sky that our Goddess Luna resides in. You must embrace your heritage and you must be our champion...my champion.” she paused, checking his expression and
listening for his pulse and heart beat which would tell much. Lucas just sat listening to her as the fire burned brightly casting shadows on the river and trees about them. The wind began to pick up gently kissing the flames sending sparks floating through the air and causing the flames to dance ever higher. 33
“Long ago, Lucas, in a land far distant from here to you now, but won’t always be so, it is said a great gift was bestowed upon one of my clan. It was a gift of great magic. It gave its owner a great power. That is what has caused the war between your clan and mine. The gift disappeared somewhere around 1589 and both sides clamed the other stole it. They both desire it. It is written that this prize was a gift from the Devil himself. One of us made a pact with Satan and, in turn, the Devil gave him a gift that would give the bearer a great
power. I do not know, Lucas, what that power is, only that it will make the one that holds it powerful and that is all that was needed to know.” 34
“But how did it get lost? What do I have to do with all of this?” Lucas asked her. 35
“One of us...” Lucas turned to her and, taking her by each shoulder, cut her off. 36
“You keep saying one of us. One of us! What the hell do you mean one of us? Who are we?” he questioned her. 37
“In time, Lucas, in time, but first, as I said, one of us made a deal. His name was Peter Stumpp or Stube, Stubbe, Stumpf. He went by many names.
Nevertheless, it was he who made the deal. It was he whom the dark one gave the gift to and, it is said, drove him mad. For 25 years this Peter Stube possessed this thing the Devil had given him and over the years he killed fourteen children, even devoured two women’s unborn fetus from their very womb before the people of Bedburg, Germany tracked him down and killed him. And that is when the gift disappeared from the knowledge of men. Because of the power it wields, both clans have sought it. It has been my father’s obsession since I can
remember. He seeks of it always. Finding it consumes him. 38
And now you have come, Lothario, the chosen one. It is said he will come from the north. The Halfling with Luna emblazoned on his scalp in a half circle. It is then the gift will make its whereabouts known. I know only recent history of our clans, Lucas. Of the very beginning I only know we were spawned from the brothers Romulus and Remus in the Palatine hills, but that is all I know. I have heard the ancients speak in whispers of such things, but was always ushered out of the room before hearing much. 39
As for whom we are Lucas, I shall show you.” Jenna stood and faced him, “Do not fear, I will not ever harm you. You must trust me. Do you trust me, Lucas?” she asked, and he nodded his head yes. “Then come stand next to me, Lucas, and I will show you who you are.” she whispered. Lucas moved closer to
Jenna, so close he could smell her hair and he could feel her breath upon him.
Then he felt suddenly her touching him. Trailing her finger over his eyes, around and down his face, over his nose, across his lips till she reached his neck. That’s when she began to walk around him, still dragging her finger lightly after her around Lucas. 40
She began to whisper to him. “Open your heart, Lothario, and close your eyes” and he did. “Embrace your heritage. Lift your face up to the night. She is your mother. Breathe deeply of the forest who is your father. Take in the cry of the wild and the sounds of your brothers and sisters. Come to me, Lucas,
come.” and she dragged her finger across the top of her chest just under her neckline, leaving a thin trail of blood. Reaching up she pulled Lucas’s head down to the red line of life and his instinct took over as he began to lick and suck on her wound. “Drink of me, my Lord, and we will forever be bound to each
other, my blood and yours together. I will always come when you call.” and then she stepped back. She had waited for this time since she was a little girl.
She had hoped and dreamed she would be the one to bring him forward to their world and that she would be his and he hers. They were bound now. Their blood was surging together and there was nothing stronger in their world. And then
Lucas began to change. 41
His heart began to race. He felt his face changing.
His nose began to push out and narrowing, sounding like a sheet of paper being torn in half as it grew into a snout. His eye teeth sharpened to points and lengthened two inches. He felt something seeping out from his body and looking down saw it was hair, light golden hair growing all over him. His hands began to elongate into paws. He had PAWS! But not paws as you see on a dog, there were still ten fingers and there were still two hands, just misshapen with claws that looked as if they could shred steel. Kicking his loafers off allowed his feet to spread and lengthen, also growing hair and claws. He reached up feeling his ears begin to lengthen, growing in to pointed cone shapes and, almost on their own, began to swivel and pick up sounds he never heard before. His eyes stabbed the darkened areas around him he couldn’t penetrate before. 42
Then he felt his back and chest begin to widen, tear and spread. His ribcage spreading sounded like the sprockets on a ten speed bike changing gears. The growth stopped just short of ripping his shirt, though stretching it to its limit.
Then there was only the sound of his breathing. Looking down at his hands again he was in shock. Jenna came closer to him. 43
“It will come easier, Lucas, as you become accustomed to it. Your changes will not take long soon.” 44
“What the hell am I?” Wait! Wait! Hold up! I can talk? I can still talk? I can talk! What am I? A werewolf or something?” he asked looking at her. 45
“Yes, that is what you are called by the people of this world and we use it in slang, but you are a Ur-bar-ra. That is what our race is called. It is an old Hittite word, but if you are more comfortable we will call it werewolf for now.” she said smiling. 46
“Comfortable? You call this comfortable? Jenna, what are we? Uhmmm, do you look the same? Jesus, I feel ridiculous.” Lucas was babbling now, almost going into a panic. “I got to sit down he said.” moving to the chairs. 47
Jenna’s eyes widened as she started to shout, “Lucas wai...” and her voice trailed off as Lucas sat down smashing the lawn chair as flat as a pancake and landing on the seat of his pants on the ground. “Wait.” she finished quietly. Lucas sat there on the ground with his hands open in a gesture of despair. 48
“What? What now? What just happened?” 49
“In your Ur-bar form you weigh several hundred pounds more, though you don’t feel it.” she said, trying, but could not contain herself any longer, and burst out laughing at the sight of him sitting on a flattened lawn chair. Lucas first growled at her and then he burst out joining her rolling over on his side. He
reached out and grabbed her ankle pulling her down. They began to wrestle rolling around on the ground and Lucas, without realizing it, transformed back into his human form. They giggled and played like kids. Unknown to them, it
would be the last time they would be able to be carefree and children. 50
