Prisoner of War: Prologue

Prologue1

There was a slight crack; the sound of a twig breaking under someone's foot. She didn't take the time to see who it was. In an instant she was running.2

Away from him. Away from home.3

All she could do was run and hope that no one would ever catch her even if she deserved it. But she was a coward. There was no way that someone as spineless as her could ever face up to punishment.4

Stumbling over her own feet, over the rocks that littered the ground. Her breathing sounded so loud to her ears - how long would it be before anyone heard it? The pounding of her heart, sounding like the throb throb of music put on too loud, made it even worse. It was like highlighting herself on a blank piece of paper.5

That's why she ran faster, ignoring the scream that raked at her cramped muscles. Her throat would give out a real one if she was caught by any of them.6

A traitor to one side. A friend of the enemy to the other.7

It was no use. She had no chance against either side. It was a wonder why no one had caught her yet. That jinxed her.8

Something tackled her from behind, sending her into the ground. A hand clamped tight around her mouth, enabling her from any noise-making. The body was warm and familiar; it made her shudder.9

"I caught you."10
