He was looking out the fogged-up window, watching a young girl play in the snow. 2
He decided he could use some fresh air, so he walked outside, breathing little puffs of visible air.3
The girl saw him and waves him over. “Come play with me,” she said.4
“Um, okay,” he said, kind of second-thinking himself. What if someone saw him?5
“Hi,” she said. “I sure could use some help with Mr. Snowy.” She gestured to a wilting snowman.6
“Um, didn’t your mom tell you not to talk to strangers?” he asked.7
“You look nice enough,” she said. “And lonely.” 8
Lonely indeed. His brothers were ignoring for some unapparent reason, and his parents were on vacation. He was sad, and very lonely.9
So he sat down and helped her with her snowman, until a very angry teenage girl stomped outside.10
“Hi Carolyn!” the younger girl said, waving. “That’s my babysitter.”11
“Who are you?” Carolyn said.12
“Um, I’m Nick.” He stuck out his hand, but she didn’t take it. She just stomped her foot. 13
“And why are you here?” she demanded.14
“She asked me to play with her …” Nick said.15
“Julia, is that true?” Carolyn said.16
“Yeah, it is. He’s nice.” Julia whispered something in Carolyn’s ear and Carolyn told her to shut up.17
Then Julia got up and ran inside. 18
“So.” Carolyn smiled. “Sorry for being so mean back there.” Then she threw a snowball at Nick.19
Nick said, “Hey!” and threw one back at her. She glared at him playfully, and nudged him, making him fall into the snow.20
“Aw, now I’m cold and wet!” Nick said.21
Carolyn gave a little fake cry and collapsed next to him. “Better?” she said, getting about an inch away from his face. 22
“All better,” he said, smiling.23
Julia came outside, screaming, “Mommy’s home! Mommy’s home!”24
Carolyn got up and brushed the snow off of herself. “Well, I’d better get going.” She slipped something in Nick’s hand and ran inside. 25
It was a note.26
Hey, Nick! I think you’re awesome! 27
Call me as soon as you can.
