Toni Aloise (character profile)

Hmmm... There's some decent size spoilers in this so be careful.1

FULL NAME - Antoniette "Toni" Aloise. A slave to vampires. Assumed names to date: Sarah, Tania Kent. Also known by other names in past lives such as D'Arcy, and Eilis. She goes mostly by Toni because that's what her parents called her (they wanted a boy).2

PHYSICAL APPEARANCES (eyes, hair, height, distinguishing marks) -Toni's a little tall at 5'9" with long, straight, brown hair and hazel eyes. Over the period of the book her weight has fluctuated eventually evening out at 175, she was much heavier at the beginning of the novel. As for distinguishing marks they too changed over the period of the novel as she was whipped, burned, and of course bitten. Eventually all scars save for the ones made by the whipping on her back were removed. 5

PERSONALITY - Toni can be obstinate, paranoid, subservient, and sometimes delirious. She cares (sometimes too much) about her closest friends yet cares little for her own life.6

BACKGROUND - Toni was raised in a typical middle class suburb in Southern California. She had a fairly lonely childhood which led into a lonely adult hood having few lovers and becoming an engineer only for the stability of the work. While that life has a little influence on her, her life completely changed after being taken slave and thus has little relevance to her.7

LIKES/DISLIKES - Toni once was a Trekkie but since her kidnapping that had faded. She mostly writes when she has time or studies various subjects in the library. Otherwise there is always the billiard table and chess sets. She definitely dislikes all the back stabbing and lies that go on in that place. And really dislikes being reminded of the prophecy that's supposed to be about her.8

GOALS - to get the hell away from the vampires.9

ABILITIES - Toni can fix a lot of things, from broken toasters to computers to people's relationships. She just can't fix herself. She has a strong ability to adapt to almost any situation or personality type and uses this more as a survival mechanism than anything else. About halfway through she also learns she's a bit telepathic being able to communicate first with her vampire lover and later with others.10

STRENGTHS - Toni was given an assignment at one point to write five good things about herself, this is what she wrote;11

"I have a good sense of humor. I'm a good listener. I like to help others. I'm creative. I'm honest" Some of those may or may not be true but they're her interpretation.12

WEAKNESSES - There's nothing like kryptonite that can stop Toni dead in her tracks but the vampires have broken her will by the end so thoroughly that she will do anything they say.13

OTHER - Toni has quite a dynamic relationships. The man she loves is a vampire how has a deadly secret. Her mentor is a dominatrix. Her antagonist attempts to instill himself as her friend and yet is also seeking her death. Her best friend an air head, and slave since childhood. About the only reasonable one around her is her father figure. And a mysterious man who may or may not be real attempts to help her from time to time. 14

Her main conflict, other than dealing with all of these people and her own insecurities, is dealing with everyday life of serving vampires and attempting to escape from them. Will she ever be able to? Will she fulfill the prophecy as some believe? Or will she go completely insane?
