Don't Answer The Door - Ch. 17

Alex fell off the steps. He layed there, his vision was blurred. When he went to get up, he felt lightheaded. His hand involuntarily went to his head and he felt something wet and sticky. When he looked at his hand, he saw something red, and it felt warm. It was his blood, he was bleeding from his head! Alex began to panic because he didn't know what to do. He slowly walked back into the house and bent over to pick up the bandages. When he bent over he saw blood drip to the floor. He sat down on his knees as he tried to unwrap the bandage. He had a hard time wrapping his wound, but it was still done.1

Alex remembered Eva and he suddenly stood up. It hit him it right then that Eva was his motivation. She was the one that kept him going. Alex jogged out of the house once again, but this time he held onto the railing, just to be careful.2

"Eva?" Alex whispered as he approached the car.3

Alex felt his knees become weak and he almost collapsed. 4

"Oh God! What the hell?!" Alex screamed.5

He stared inside the car. He couldn't get his eyes off the body. It was Matt's body and he had streams of blood flowing down his stomach. Alex noticed some open wounds at his chest. They were not really big enough to kill him, but it still bleed a lot. Alex took his shirt off quickly and sat in the backseat of the car.6

"Owe! Son of a bitch!" Alex screamed as he sat on something sharp.7

Alex lifted his lower body and put his hand under him on the seat. He pulled out a shard of glass and Alex gasped as everything connected. Alex recognized the piece of glass, it was from the broken window upstairs in his bedroom.8

"Oh, Eva... Why..." Alex asked no one but himself.9

He took off his shirt and placed it over Matt's chest. It was difficult to keep it there since Matt was obese, but Alex still managed. He placed his ear next to Matt's mouth and nose and felt warm air coming out. Matt was still alive, just unconscious. Alex got out of the car, remembering Eva. He still had to find her, but where was she?10

Alex ran out of the car, but something stopped him. Matt was grabbing onto his arm. Alex turned to look at Matt and he saw his lips moving slowly, barely parting.11

"What?" Alex asked, he couldn't hear him, so he got closer.12

"I'm... please help...m e. Don't leave..." Matt whispered, unable to talk loudly, as his words came out in a mumble.13

"I have to find Eva..." Alex said, not knowing what to do.14

Matt grew quiet, his eyes closed again and his arm fell to his side. Alex didn't want to die, well not in his car at least. Alex got into the front seat and he started the engine. He waited five minutes, hoping to see Eva, but he had no such luck.15

"God, Where are you Eva? Please be okay." Alex whispered to himself as he felt a lump in his throat.16

Alex decided that all the waiting is only killing Matt. He hesitantly began to drive away, tears welling in his eyes because he was hating himself.17

Alex was still driving after two miles, and he was still in the desert. The sun was setting quickly, and it was becoming very difficult to see.18

As Alex was driving he thought he saw something, but he drove along. Suddenly he realized something. He just passed someone, someone was walking. Who could it be? He thought.19

"Eva!?" Alex said as he quickly stopped the car.20

Alex made a quick u-turn and drove quickly back to where he thought he saw her. Alex began to slow the car as he approached her.21

Rolling down the windows, he asked "Eva?"22

He recognized his shirt and his pants and stopped the car. He got out and ran towards Eva.23

"Eva! Stop!" It seemed as if she wasn't even there. That really scared Alex more than he could say.24

Alex shook her by the shoulder and held tightly to her arm, making her stop.25

"I killed him, I killed him..."Eva kept repeating it to herself over and over.26

"What are you talking about? Eva, you're freezing!" He yelled, not at her, but at how cold her skin felt.27

When Alex touched Eva's skin, he got chills. Her skin was so cold that it didn't seem natural. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tightly.28

"Eva, you didn't kill anyone. You didn't kill anyone..." He repeated now to try to calm Eva.29

"I killed my own father." She cried.30

Alex was about to say that he wasn't her father, to remind her, but he thought it won't be the wisest decision. 31

"He's not dead Eva! He's hurt yes, but he's in the back of the car. I was just taking him to the hospital. Thank God I saw you Eva, thank God. I was feeling so guilty because I thought I left you behind.. it was such a horrible feeling Eva." He said, as he held back tears.32

"What? You were going to leave me?" Eva asked as she looked up into Alex's green eyes, the moonlight was beginning to reflect in them.33

Alex saw the hurt in her eyes. He bit his lower lip, afraid that Eva was going to scream at him in anger, and in pain. 34

"I'm sorry." Was all that he could tell her. 35

He knew that the hurt she felt was like no other, and probably no words could heal it right now, only pain.36

"Can we get into the car? We need to get into town, you're da..." Alex didn't finished his sentence.37

He took a deep breath, and said, "He's dying as we speak." 38

Alex didn't want to call Matt Eva's father anymore, he wasn't after all.39

Eva stared into Alex's eyes, then her eyes went cold as she turned her head and looked at Matt who was laying down. She had no sympathy towards him, she only felt sorry for herself. She was sorry that her life turned out this way. Her father killed her mother. Why doesn't that sound right? Eva thought. Tears welled back into her eyes as she remembered, Matt isn't her father. She never knew her biological father, and that made her cry again.40

"Eva? What's the matter?" Alex asked, stunned at the sudden amount of tears. 41

"I.. I.. let's get this over with." She sighed. 42

Eva got out of Alex's arms and walked to the passenger side of the car, and got in. 43

"Hurry up, he's dying." Eva said.44

She didn't want Matt to live because she despised him with every fiber of her being. At the same time, she didn't want him to die because she will have his blood on her hands. She didn't want to be locked up for the rest of her life. 45

Alex ran to the drivers side and got in, starting the car again. They began to drive quickly, because every time Alex looked into the rear view mirror, he would see that Matt was getting weaker and weaker. Alex felt a bit uncomfortable because there was no talking going on, none at all. He didn't know what to say to Eva, and Eva felt the same way.46

"Are you feeling any better?" Alex asked, with genuine worry. 47

"I'm fine." Eva replied, her voice was unintentionally cold. 48

Eva was staring at the moon that was high above in the dark sky. Eva pondered why it could be there were no stars in the sky for two days in a row. They were in the desert, there is no clouds. That was what she thought though, and she had a feeling she was wrong. 49

Eva became bored of the moon, and began to stare at the trees that just appeared around them. They were finally out of the dull desert and driving past the woods. It seemed so dark out there, so full of evil. She didn't know why. Eva sighed and looked back at Alex, who was flipping through the radio stations as he was driving. When she looked up at the road, she let out a horrified scream.50

"Watch out!" She screamed. 51

That was the last thing said before they hit something that was in the middle of the road. The car didn't stop. Alex was trying to get it under control, but it went off the road and began to run down a small hill. The car crashed into some trees. Eva and Alex both were taken out of their seats, and their heads both hit the windshield. They didn't go through, but Alex screamed in agony. His head was still hurting from the previous bruises. Eva fell back into her seat, and her hand shot up to her neck.52

"What the fuck! What the hell did you hit up there?!" She screamed at Alex.53

"Whoa, chill out. I don't know, probably a deer or something!" He screamed back, not in the mood to be yelled at.54

"There are no fucking deer around damn it!" Eva screamed, angry at Alex for being so stupid.55

"Well let's go see what it was, stop your bitching!" Alex snapped, not caring if he hurt Eva's feelings. 56

Alex was in so much pain that he kept stumbling. He couldn't see right. They left Matt behind in the car, realizing it won't do any one good if he came along. They climbed the hill that led up to the road. It didn't seem so long when they were crashing down with the car. Eva and Alex began panting as they got back onto the road. 57

They began looking around, trying to find what it was they hit. Alex left Eva and began walking back a few feet. 58

"Wait!" Eva screamed to Alex. 59

Eva felt scared, and she felt a chill run through her body. She never felt so alone. The entire place frightened her. She ran up to Alex, placing her hand around his arm. 60

"Oh My God!" Alex and Eva screamed in unison. 61

Eva's hands shot up to her mouth, as she gasped. Her entire body was shaking as her eyes were as wide as ever. 62

"Oh.. Oh.. God!" She screamed.63

Alex didn't know what to say or do. He stood there staring at what he did, his hands going numb. Everything zoned out, even Eva's screams that were so close to his ears.64
