Pure of Heart (Chapter One)

Chapter 1 1

Wakin up with the Wolf turned on exactly at 7:00 AM. The unmistakable voices of the Wolf, Ellen Z, Jesse and Lovey woke up Lucas every morning for the last three years.
He listened to the banter as he made his way to the bathroom.
They seemed to be talking about a fight of some kind across the bridge in Schaghticoke last night. A real brawl apparently, but no one was arrested.

A police car had been flipped right over on its side. That’s amazing, he thought. I wish I had seen that. Oh well, better get ready. Last day of school then summer vacation! Yahoo!
At 16 years old Lucas had eyes that would captivate people who looked into them. They were the color of hazel and would twinkle in the light from the tiny gold flecks that almost seemed to circle his pupil like a solar system.
His dirty blond hair with highlights streaked by the sun was cut high and tight with a crescent moon shaved into it. He always had a fascination with the moon since the first time he looked upon it.
His handsome features were just now at 16 starting to blossom. A stern jaw line accompanied a far too serious look for someone so young. He stood almost 6 ft. tall and excelled in every sport he played. In fact, he was the best athlete in the state.
It seemed as soon as he could walk he was running. And he was strong! It was just last year he began lifting weights and already far surpassed all the other kids in his school in the bench press, overhead press, squats and all other types of physical accomplishments. This last month he had been feeling strange, kind of off kilter as his mom would say, almost since his birthday last month.
Dressing quickly he hurried out of his house and up to the top of Ferry Lane to catch the bus for his last day before the summer. 2

The last day of school was uneventful except for the fact that it was the last day of school and only a half day. The kids spent it saying their goodbyes to the teachers and classmates who would be going away with their families.

At noon the kids who rode the bus boarded and waved goodbye to Stillwater Middle and High Schools for the summer, shouting, singing and literally dancing up the isle of the automobile. 3

Lucas, in no hurry, walked home the short mile through the football field and onto the old trail that led past the cornfield all the way to the lane with Tamsey who lived at the end of the lane.

Ferry Lane ran off of Hudson Avenue in Stillwater, New York and parallel with the Hudson River for about three quarters
of a mile. It was lined with private camps for people getting out of Troy and the surrounding area for the summer as well as homes of residents of the town.
It was a quaint little lane with woods and swamps on the backside of the homes and camps, while the mighty Hudson flowed out front where all sorts of activity would go on, from fishing to swimming and water skiing. At the end of the road was a 7ft gate chained and padlocked. A fence ran off the road on the right side down to the river. On the left side the fence ran into the woods for miles.

No Trespassing signs hung from it. On the other side of the gate the road ran on for miles, twisting and turning along the river, running past old now abandoned camps. 4

Tamsey lived just on the other side of the gate. She was older than Lucas who, as far back as he could remember, had a crush on her. Her hair was a light brown, almost blond, with dark streaks, parted in the middle and shoulder length.

At 18 she was as developed as any woman of 25 and carried every bit of it confidently. Her blues eyes always seemed to take on an almost teal color in the sunlight. She was a very pretty girl and popular with the boys. 5

Tamsey always knew Lucas had a thing for her and would tease him gently almost daily, never cruelly because she truly had a deep affection for him, just not that way. More like a little brother. 6

“So Lucas, who are you interested in this summer? Any girls I have to be jealous about?” she asked in that slow drawl she used that would just make him blush. 7

“Noooo, I mean, uh, there’s Kim..."he said, but she broke him off. 8

“Sleaze bag.” 9

“Hey!” he said, laughing, “Well there’s Janice.” 10

“Holy Roller.” 11

“Debbie?” 12

“Too ugly.” 13

“Nancy?” 14

“Too thin.” 15

“Gayle?” 16

“Too weird!” 17

“Now hold on. Is there something wrong with everyone?” he asked. 18

“Everyone but me, Darling.” she said giggling. And kissed him on the cheek then continued. “Hello there, boy. Are you walking me home?” and she laughed again.
It was then he noticed he was right in front of his house and hadn’t even realized it. Tamsey waved seductively at him as she continued on down the road laughing. Lucas stood watching her thinking; you got that right, everyone but you! 19

Later that evening he finished the dishes and, as usual, his mom was already gone. She was out in the local bar looking for arms to crash in for the night.
Lucas took a shower, pulled on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and headed out and up the lane to the village. He lived a quarter of a mile from the top of the lane.

Ferry Lane, as said before, turned off of Hudson Avenue into a little hill, then straightening out and running down about 100 yards before bending over a bridge that crossed a swamp, then continuing straight on until it reached the fenced off area and Tamsey’s. 20

Lucas lived 40 yards from the little bridge. He walked up past the old Demarco place which had just been sold. It sat at the bottom of the hill and was just a trailer with a porch built onto it.

He hadn’t seen the new tenets yet, but heard there was a girl. He passed the structure and had gone a little ways when he thought he heard a growl. Turning back he saw nothing. All was dark and serene. He shrugged and continued up to the top
of the hill, took a left and headed down into the village. 21

Lucas and his friends were across the Stillwater Bridge, down by the lock on canal road, drinking. There was Mark Travens, tall and lanky, and talked with the same drawl as Tamsey, which made sense because he was her cousin. He had a wide forehead he would use to smash things like apples, oranges and even cans of beer with, hence the nickname wedge head. 22

Scott Phreesbe sat across from Mark. He had dark hair, acne and was a little overweight.
Sitting next to Lucas was George Kush, wearing his hair in a mop top. The kids called him Beetle after the popular legendary band.
They sat drinking a case of Budweiser Lucas begged Tamsey to buy for them.
Tamsey could get whatever she wanted, whenever. 23

After they had a good buzz on, the boys crossed back over the bridge into the village, which consisted of a laundromat, drugstore, sub shop and three bars.
The laundromat was one building, 30 ft. long, with a pizza parlor called Carlo’s next door. There were three steps running the length of the building that the kids all hung out on. Carlo’s doubled as a pizza parlor and game room.

The boys, however, weren’t heading there first. They first were going to George’s to pick up some clothes so he could spend the night in Mark’s yard in the tent they had put up earlier. 24

George lived in an old Victorian style home with a porch that ran the length of the front of the house and half way around it. The boys all piled in through the front door trying to be first to get the good chairs in front of the TV while waiting for George.

George’s parents were out for the night and only his sister
was home upstairs.
Lucas was relegated to the couch as Mark flipped on the TV and began rifling through channels when Lucas excitedly shouted, “Wait! Wait, go back, Mark, go back.” directing Mark to back up on the channels until he reached channel 54.
“Stop! Yeah, right here, man. This is a cool show.” Lucas said. And they all started watching. On the TV was a man with a weathered look about him, dressed in a white sport coat and pants with a hat of the same color. He slammed his fist down onto a desk and exclaimed, “This nut thinks he’s a werewolf!”

“What’s this show?” Mark asked, not taking his eyes off the set, as the man behind the desk stood up ordering the other man in white out of his office. 25

“It’s a show from the 70’s called The Night Stalker, and it’s pretty good.” Lucas answered. They all watched now as a mysterious stranger began turning into a werewolf under the light of a full moon. Of course, being a little drunk, the 70’s effects seemed better then they actually were and the boys were mesmerized when George came back downstairs. 26

“Hey, my parents won’t be home until late. You guys just wanna hang here? We can go get more beer and some munchies.” The boys all looked at each other and agreed. Lucas suggested he stay here at the house because he wanted to watch the rest of the show.

The boys, having no objections, said their usual departure lines like, “Let’s make like Tom and cruise.” Mark said, followed by
George’s “Let’s make like a rock and roll.” and Scott’s, “Let’s make like a banana and split.” Lucas, rolling his eyes and laughing, turned the TV up. 27

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, like I haven’t heard those a couple thousand times. Just hurry back and hey, grab some Slim Jim’s.” he called after them.

Lucas was alone for maybe five minutes when he heard George’s sister coming down the stairs. Looking up he nodded and tried to act like it was no big deal that she had just a jersey on coming down to her thighs. Her blond hair was hanging loosely down to her shoulders and her dark skin from tanning was glowing under the lamp’s light. 28

“Hey, Tamar, what’s up?” he struggled to get out. She smiled, as her brown eyes were focusing on Lucas looking him up and down. 29

“Hello, Lucas. Where is everyone? Is it just you and me?” she asked coyly, sliding onto the couch next to him. Tamar was the same age as Tamsey and had a reputation of going all the way. Her breasts, which were not small, were pushing the jersey out, stretching it. She lifted one long tanned leg and placed her foot on the coffee table. “Where did my brother and the two geeks go?” she asked. Lucas laughed looking at her leg stretched out in front of him 30

“They went to the store to get some beer and stuff. They’ll be awhile. They got to get someone to buy it for them.” he answered her smiling.

Tamar then took her leg from the coffee table and, twisting towards him, laid it across his lap.
“My, my, this is turning into your lucky night I think, Lucas.” she said winking at him.

Lucas was trying to play it cool while his heart was beating in his ears. He began to rub her leg smiling. 31

“Yeah, well I guess time will tell.” he answered, rubbing higher, expecting at any minute the older girl to put an end to this little sexual waltz. But instead, she laid the side of her head against the couch and parted her legs a little wider which, in turn, hiked her jersey up higher giving Lucas a clear view of the light blond hair between her legs. Shit! he thought, she has no underwear on! He swallowed hard and continued up her leg as Tamar, eyes closed, shifted slightly and leaned back, scooting her bottom closer to him. 32

Lucas’s heart was pounding and his blood was rushing through his body as Tamar began to gyrate her hips to the rhythm of his hand as he reached her mound. She groaned loudly then, snapping her eyes open, she lowered her gaze at his hand then slowly back to his face smiling. 33

“Come on, Lucas. Let’s go for a walk.” she said. Without waiting for him to answer, she swung her legs to the floor, standing up, pulling him by the hand up with her.

She headed for the back door, slipping on her thongs, and out she went leading Lucas by the hand. She took him to their little guest house in the far corner of the yard against the woods. Tamar, with Lucas in tow, entered the little one room house and shut the door. 34

Lucas lay in bed the next morning with his hands behind his head smiling. Wow! So that’s what all the fuss was about. And Tamar certainly took her time and guided him, teaching him what woman, well what girls at least like. Then again, from the sounds Tamar was making, loved.

He played every little detail out over and over in his mind. After awhile he fell back asleep, waking at noon and finally getting out of bed. He spent the day just lounging around in the lawn chairs out in front of his house by the river. Several kids stopped by to shoot the shit now and then as they watched the boats pulling skiers on the river. 35

Finally the time came to head up to the village again. Maybe he will stop by and see what Tamar is up to. All day he had been thinking about her. He left his house and headed up the lane, wearing jeans and a tank top. He was just passing the old
Demarco house again when a girl’s voice startled him. 36

“Hey there, Tiger, where are you off to in such a hurry?"
Turning towards the trailer he caught his breath. There, sitting up on the roof of the house with legs hanging over the side, was a boy and girl. The boy was pasty white with dark eyes and long curly brown hair falling to his shoulders. He was thin, with prominent cheekbones and very thin eye lashes almost to a point of not having any.
But it was the girl who caused his sharp intake of breath. She was beautiful and she sat smiling at him. Everything about her was very dark; Her hair was jet black with dark brown streaks running through it as it fell straight down to her waist. Her face was perfect; thin lips and cheeks,a thin line of freckles running just under her eyes across her nose were perfectly placed if there was such a thing blending in with her chestnut color skin. Dark eyes seeming to catch the light of the dying sun and reflect it back at him in a dazzaling array of colors.
She looked Italian with American Indian mixed in. When she
smiled, perfectly aligned white teeth only added to her flawless beauty. She was perfect. She was gorgeous. She was… 37

“Hey, kid, you there?” the boy was speaking now, snapping Lucas out of his adoration. “I think we lost him, Jenna. Man, did he take a liking to you.” the boy continued, chuckling. 38

“Stop it, Tristan. You’re embarrassing him.” the girl said. Then, turning to Lucas, she again smiled and his knees almost buckled. “Hi, I’m Jenna, and this wacko here is Tristan.” she said introducing herself and the boy. 39

“Lucas.” is all he said, still staring at her. Then slightly shaking his head,
“Yeah, I’m Lucas, and you said your name was Jenna?” 40

“Me Lucas. You Jenna. Hey, I’m here to Tarzan....Tristan, remember?” The pasty white boy said.41

“Tristan, stop it. You’re not funny. So Lucas, it certainly was nice meeting you.” Jenna said with a smile that rooted Lucas right to the spot he was standing in. 42

“Yeah, uh, me too.” was all he could think to say, but made no move to leave until finally Jenna, sweetly tilting her head and laughing, softly asked, “You want to come up and have a beer with us? We like to sit up here. Come on up. The ladder is around back.” 43

Soon Lucas was sitting next to Tristan drinking a beer, occasionally leaning forward to peer around the boy at the girl. All thoughts of going up street, as the kids from the lane called the town, and Tamar were gone from his head. 44

“So are you two brother and sister?” he asked, his heart beating so loud he thought they could hear it. Say yes, say yes was running through his head over and over. 45

“No.” and his heart sank. “He’s my cousin.” Jenna said, and Lucas practically jumped out of his skin. His heart was racing again. 46

“And a very protective cousin at that.” Tristan chimed in menacingly. Jenna laid a soft hand on Tristan’s shoulder. 47

“We have nothing to fear from Lucas, Tristan. He will not ever hurt us.” she said peering through the now stygian darkness of the lane. 48

The lane had no lights other then porch lights. The village never installed street lights because it was a private lane and the residents living on it would have to foot the bill so alas, no lights. 49

“You guys want to start a fire and hang out?” Jenna asked. Both boys nodded yes. Lucas did not want to leave. Standing up he began to turn for the ladder when Jenna stunned him by just slipping off the roof and landing almost cat like on the ground, making the 14 ft. drop look as easy as if she were stepping off a curb. 50

“Show off.” Tristan said. And turning to Lucas, he said, “Come on, Hero, I’m with you.” and the boys exited the roof via the ladder. 51

Lucas climbed down the ladder carefully in the dark and went to the fire pit. Jenna already had it lit and, standing there, she turned to face him. It was his first good look at her and now he was even more enamored then he had been previously. She was almost as tall as Lucas. She had on a blue snug tank top emblazoned with the familiar red and yellow symbol of Supergirl. 52

The shirt was tucked inside a pair of black capris. Her slender arms were toned and in perfect proportion to her body, which seemed to just flow with every movement she made. Lucas just stood staring at her again. She truly was just absolutely gorgeous. 53

“Hello? Hello? Earth to Lucas or whatever planet you now have taken off to.” Tristan said waving his hand in Lucas’s face. 54

“Huh? Oh yeah, what’s up? What?” Lucas bumbled out, hurrying up to take the chair next to Jenna. 55

“So where are you guys from?” he asked, wishing really only to hear from Jenna, but knew her cousin would butt in. 56

“We’re from everywhere, but nowhere in particular, my friend.” Tristan said and started to continue when a black Rolls Royce pulled up, looking so out of place in this setting in the driveway of the trailer. A tall broad shouldered man exited the car and headed straight for the back of the house and the kids. Jenna immediately stood up and moved in front of Lucas. 57

“What is he doing here? Jenna, what is he doing here?” the stranger demanded.
Lucas was perplexed and a little scared. What the hell did he do? He didn’t know this guy. 58

“Father, it’s ok. I invited him. Please, he’s not hurting us.” Jenna implored. 59

“No! He will eventually. As soon as he figures out who he is, he will.” Then, brushing past Jenna, he bent down. Even at 6 ft. the man towered over Lucas and had to stoop to look him eye to eye. “Leave here and stay away from my daughter or you and your family won’t live to regret it, boy! Do I make myself clear?” he growled. Jenna was now beginning to cry. 60

“But Si...sir...I have no idea what I’ve done. I don’t know you. I just met your daughter and Tristan.” Tristan had disappeared. “I haven’t done anything and have no intention of ever hurting her.” Lucas said. 61

“You don’t now, bright one, but you will. Now LEAVE! Get off my property.” 62

Jenna turned and ran off into the woods crying. Lucas, casting no backward glances and not understanding any of what just happened, lowered his head and turned away feeling the man’s eyes burning into him. 63
