To the Dark Side

Chapter 1: Cookies1

“Hey…Yeah, you! Do you want a cookie??” a strange, mysterious voice called in the distance. “They’re warm!!” the strange voice tempted.2

I found myself moving towards the voice, wanting that cookie. After a few steps, I could smell warm cookies in the air; my pace quickened.3

“Ah-ah!” the voice said, rejecting me. “You have to do something for me to get it.” I felt a presence behind me and as I turned around, I saw an unfamiliar face. He was obviously male; he was tall, slender, and had a sort of crooked smile that lured me in. His hair was brown, his face was clean shaven, and as his eyes stared into mine, I noticed they were chocolate colored. Mm, chocolate.4

“Do you want that cookie?” he asked as his pale hand rose to rest on my shoulder. Something in me told me to be scared, but I just wasn’t. I nodded staring in to the chocolateness. A smile started on his face as he snapped his fingers once. My body shook as we suddenly appeared in a red room. “You must go back for now…I’ll reveal myself to you with the cookies…Don’t forget!” he winked as he snapped again.5

I found my mother snapping in my face, trying to wake me as I groaned and covered my face with my hands. “Finally,” my mother said dramatically. “I’ve been trying to wake you up for ten minutes,” she said angrily. “Geesh, Omori.”6

I sighed sitting up and looked around in my room. Glancing at the dresser next to the door, I saw that the clock read 7:45 AM. Waiting for my brain to turn on, then blinked as I burst into my closet. I panicked looking for a clean uniform for school.7

The uniform was a white shirt with an orange tie and skirt with black stripes in it. They also came in purple and red, depending on your wants. I was an orange kinda girl, and my friends wanted to each get one of different color. After I quickly put my uniform on, I went to the bathroom to fix my hair.8

I had a few hair styles I stuck with. Today was a hurry day, so I had two, just straight, or in a side ponytail. After no time at all, I placed my hair into a side ponytail. I glanced in the mirror—same blond hair and pale skin with green eyes. A sigh escaped my lips as I realized I was wasting time. Rushing outside and ran to school. Hearing the warning bell ring, I ran into my class, taking my seat just as the late bell rang.9

“Yes!!” I shouted, and the class all turned to stare at me. I put my fist to my mouth and looked down at my desktop. Now that I had time to rest and relax, I started to rethink about the dream last night.10

The cookie man came back into my thoughts. ‘Just for cookies, I was going to give up my life,’ I thought, smacking my forehead. ‘You’re a genius…Good thing it was just a—‘, mid-thought, the door opened and the man from my dream walked in. ‘—dream…’ I stared at him.11

“Good morning, children,” he spoke with the same voice. He walked up to the front and stared directly at me. “I’m your new teacher.” He smirked.12

I knew right then this would be bad. I placed a hand under my chin, giving him the stare like I didn’t care.13

He smiled a bit as he looked away. “My name is Dab Krad. Please address me as Dab or Mr. Krad. Either will do,” he stated as he wrote his name on the board.14

I stared at his first and last name for awhile. ‘Nice name,’ I thought, thinking nothing of it. This was Math class; I got A’s in this class and only this class, so I didn’t have anything, other than this teacher, to worry about. He started today’s lesson as I worked on homework for that night. As I finished, he wasn’t even halfway done, so I pulled out paper and started to doodle like I always do.15

I wasn’t really paying attention to what I was doing. When I finally noticed what I’d drawn, it was too late.16

Mr. Krad picked up the drawing and looked it over. It was a picture of him holding a plate of cookies, saying, “Don’t forget!” He stared at it as he moved to the front and put it on the board. “Let’s pay attention, or do you have today’s lesson done?” he asked.17

I was embarrassed that he posted my picture up for everyone to see, so I wanted revenge. So I stood up, wrote the hardest problem on the board, and wrote it all out for him and the class to see. “Happy?” I went over and grabbed my picture, about to take it down.18

“A-ah!” He shook his finger. “You may have the answer correct and today’s lesson done, buut! I like that picture of me. It stays.” He gave a sly smiled. A shiver went down my spine.19

“20 bucks!” I held out my hand and stared at him.20

He started to pick a 20 dollar bill out of his wallet, and then he put it back. “I owe you…I don’t have the money right now.”21

I stared at him and my eye twitched. “I just saw it.” I pointed at the 20 dollar bill as he put it back in his wallet.22

“What are you talking about?” he smiled a bit as he stuffed the wallet back into his pocket.23

My eye twitched again. “Fine…” I knew he would win; he is a teacher.24

The bell rang and everyone ran out of the room, probably scared of the stupidity. Mr. Krad called me back before I could exit. Turning around, looking back at Mr. Krad; he was already pushing me into the wall behind me. I gasped and looked into his chocolate eyes.25

“I told you. Don’t forget, and you didn’t…” he smiled. “Now we can discuss our contract for that cookie.” Mr. Krad started to lean in, as all hope and light seemed to disappear with every inch he drifted closer.
