Jungle Girl

The little girl ran for her life, trying not to scream in terror and alert the men who were searching for her.1

Her bare feet pounded on the sun-baked mud, and she despeartely scanned the bare plains for a place to hide.2

The men chasing her shouted, not to far, now, and Rebecca could see them waving their guns in the distance. She screamed in terror when she heard the scuffling of feet.3

She yelped when a small monkey with a long tail appeared from behnd the bushes. It screeched and scampered off.4

Rebecca started running again. Her feet were blistering in the heat of the sun.5

Suddenly, she stopped. The jungle loomed above her head menacingly. She gulped, and padded towards it, treading softly.6

Soon, she was inside. She didn't dare try to run. Instead, she hid behind a thick palm tree with a zig-zag pattern on it's trunk. Rebecca listened desperatley for the men.7

"I saw 'er a minute ago." She heard a voice say. Rebecca peered through the bushes and nearly screamed again. One of the men was just a couple of feet away from her. She could have reached out and touched his boot.8

Another man spoke, his voice smothered with a rich, unidentifiable accent.9

"She's probably still here. Search the jungle."10

The other man spoke again. "The jungle is..too dangerous."11

"What are you talking about, Kimbay?" 12

"Sir, the jungle..it is inhabited by a great tiger..."13

Rebecca knew the tiger. She had seen it. She pictured it's razor sharp teeth and shuddered.14

Suddenly, Rebecca felt a hand over her mouth. She tried to scream, but the hand pressed against her mouth, smothering them. Try as she might, no sound came out from between the sun-tanned fingers that were gripping her so tightly.15

"Don't move." An unmistakably female voice muttered so quietly, Rebecca had to strain her ears to hear it.16

Rebecca sighed in relief. No woman could be a soilder...17

"Come with me. We must make haste." The voice commanded quietly. Rebecca obediently slipped away from the trees. She followed the girl, who could only be about thirteen or fourteen, the same age as her.18

As soon as they reached a small brook, the girl spun around and looked at Rebecca. Rebecca gasped in amazement. The girl had a hard, tan face and a muscular figure. She was wearing Some animal skins, and had a dagger stuck into her leather belt. Her long, black, tangled hair was braided and slung over her shoulder. Her eyes were almonds, the same shape and shade.19

"What's your name?" She questioned the trembling child.20

"I-I'm Rebecca." Rebecca stammered akwardly.21

"I'm Wolf." Wolf said. Rebecca wondered at her strange name for a moment.22

"Why is your name-?" Rebecca began, but Wolf cut her short.23

"Wolf?" Wolf laughed quietly. "I named myself, little girl.24

Rebecca was indignant. "Little girl? I'm the same age as you-"25

"How old are you?" Wolf planted her hands on her hips.26

"Fourteen." Rebecca replied.27

"Fourteen." Wolf answered, surprised.28

A contest entry

OK. Not dark yet, I know. I really haven't been able to get that far. It's a new version of The Jungle Book. Wolf, as you can probably guess, is a female, older, dark(soon!) version of Mowgli.

nice story, I'ts so good. Why could men chase Rebecca? Every life in jungles are dangerous! did Rebbeca do anything bad or run away? I didn't know it was from the jungle book though it is set in the jungle.
