Rachel stared at Mora's lifeless body. She had gotten up to get the newspaper when she'd seen her dog's corpse on the drive. Mora had been killed by something. Her body had been completely drained of blood. Rachel started to cry, her tears dripping onto the cement and making dark patches.1

Rachel stopped crying and bent down. Had she noticed something? She pushed her dog's silvery fur away. There, indented faintly in Mora's skin, were three identical bite marks.2

Rachel stood up. Something wierd was going on. Bite marks that looked exactly like a humans. Who could have done this? Some blood-sucking fiend?3

Rachel loved mysteries, and this one was just begging to be found out.4

Rachel was getting ready. She tossed in clean underwear, a few t-shirts, a formal dress, a few jeans, and her magnifying glass, for further study on the bites.6

Rachel slipped into her favorite skirt and tied a flowered bonnet onto her head for mourning.7

She was going to find out what was going on, even if she ended up like Mora.8

Rachel was determined. She tied the black straps of the bonnet together and picked up her suitcase. She went outside and locked her door.9

The neighborhood was eerily empty. Rachel climbed into her convertible and tossed her trunk in the back. She stared at the trail of blood the creature had left. Taking a deep breath, she followed it along the road.10

Somewhere near Santa Maria Beach, the trail stopped. 11

By looking out her window, Rachel could see fresh footprints. On each of the footprints were drops of blood.12

There was a figure, seated on the sand, string at the sea. Rachel climbed out of her car. Who could be on the beach at this time? Very fishy. 13

Rachel cautiously approached the figure.
