Daddy's Eyes

She'd just divorced him and they were both in the back of the dusty parking lot of that wal-mart both of them hated on Sunday afternoons. He looked at their little boy who was buckled in his carseat in the back of her black Mercedes and searched his mind for just one good reason for her not to go.1

She got in her car and rolled the window down as he walked up. 2

"Hey, Lisa," He started, still not entirely sure what he was going to say, "You...umm..you-"3

"Just say it, Alan," She said impatiently, tapping her fingers on the arm rest. He could picture what was runing through her mind.4

"You know I still love you, right?" He waited for her to start laughing at him, "I mean, its not gonna...you know, change anything i you don't...I mean...what I mean is..."5

She had an odd expression on her face and stopped tapping her fingers as he fell silent.6

"Yeah, I still love you to." She whispered and looked back at their little boy playing with his spider-man action figure.7

He had his Daddy's eyes.8

Oh, Lord, she was going to miss those eyes.9

Both of them looked around trying to see anything but eachother.10

"Well, I should probably go," Lisa said awkwardly, "He'll be wanting to..you know...play around."11

Alan nodded, "I know," He said as he scratched his head and tried not to look like he didn't know, " I gotta go make lunch...buy some things..."12

He looked at her and tried not to think about just how much he did love her.13

She rolled up the window with that odd expression still on her face and tried to keep the tears away as she drove out of the parking lot and off down the dirt road with the sun shining bright in her eyes.
