Radiance

I shouldn't be this frustrated.1

It's nearly my sixteenth birthday--the most anticipated birthday for a teenager (until the age of twenty-one)--and the point I couldn't wait for two years ago.2

Where are the brakes? Why can't I slow down?3

I want to stay a kid! I shouldn't be able to drive; I shouldn't be allowed to date. My mind should be full of Disney movies and how to improve my sketches, not this. Grr.4

Growing up stinks.5

It wasn't until a few months ago that I realized how scared I am to grow up. Now, I wish I'd figured it out sooner. I would've spent more of my time goofing around, being the crazy child I am, rather than the teenager I see I'm becoming. I want to still be able to watch Winnie the Pooh without shame! Or maybe--this is better--still be innocent enough that those sick, sexual jokes woven throughout our culture go right over my head. (I think I might miss THAT the most....)6

I don't want to grow up. I want to stay a kid. I am not ready for any of this yet. 7

Especially dating. Scary, much?8

Grr.

You cannot mess with time and the maturity you gain as you grow older. But you can still be a kid at heart and enjoy Winnie the Pooh. (Are you that worried about dating, since it's your last piece of thought?)

    haha

growing up is not that bad!
    each age has its beauty!

although i felt just like this when i was about to turn 15.
in Latin America, 15s are the 16s of North America.

i hated leaving the best year of my life so far, and i dreaded the idea of being in the most retarded age of all.

but then it turns out that i did change, but for the better!
i am more mature, more confident!
each passing day/year is a blessing, (oh yuck, did i say 'blessing'? ) and growing up is actually pretty cool!

good luck on your 16th b. day, anyway

    (winnie the pooh is cool!)

Well, well, well...I've been down THIS road before. And you know what else? I STILL AM. This rant speaks true to the "teenage experience." Why do people keep saying these are the best years of our lives? I'm 17, turning 18 in October and my conclusion about this period is: it's pure hell. Nothing but hell and more hell to give hell more hellish flavour!

I still watch Winnie the Pooh on occasion...but I don't let anyone else know I do. >_>

    Keep writin'!

I know! Seriously--"High school is the best time of your life..." What are these wackos trying to pull?? It sucks!

Oh, yay! I'm not alone on that.... (Winnie the Pooh, that is.)

lol. If you've looked at my page I'm not quite old enough to know how you feel yet, but I know it sucks growing up... and I miss not understanding sexual jokes too! Everytime something extremely girlish or something goes on t.v. when a guy is in the room I get sooo embarrassed even if they don't notice it. I miss not knowing anything!

Keep writing. I still love your work!

    Hey girl. Nice rant.

Loss of innocence does not always equal maturity, and maturity does not always equal loss of innocence. You can have both maturity and innocence, and I believe that'd be the best of both worlds. Feel free to keep watching Winnie the Pooh. The more time you spend with innocent things, the more it will still fill your consciousness, no matter your age. I wish you well on your slow but inevitable journey into full adulthood.
I hear you on the wishing I didn't get the nasty jokes. It's ironic how our culture is so amused by various bodily functions. Why, exactly, are they funny, anyway? It's a bit strange, really.
Your conflicting emotions came through vividly here; I especially liked the spacing of the last few lines. Definitely more powerful that way.
