Love on the Escape

Chapter 11

Life was always a simple thing for me to do. I was top in my class for school, had amazing friends, and wonderful parents. I wouldn’t say my life was perfect, but it was close.2

As long as I can remember I have danced with the support of my parents behind me all the way.3

To day was my showcase for my school. I had choreographed each dance and had a couple of solos myself. It was an honor to have a showcase for the school. Only one senior was chosen in the dance program each year for the showcase. It was a big event, not only for the school, but for the community.4

I lived in the small town of Greens, California. It was a beautiful forest surrounded town with good people in it. It was a town where everyone knew each other.5

I awoke with adrenaline rushing through my veins. My breathing was too fast, causing hyperventilation. Slowly I took bigger breaths and calmed myself down. I kept telling myself the showcase is going to go flawlessly; hoping that it actually will I dressed quickly into dance shorts and a cami; nothing too much.6

My best friend Molly was coming over to help me prepare everything for the showcase. Molly and I have been friends since first grade and been unseperatable since then. We even are planning on going to the same college, depending on some things like the showcase.7

The doorbell rang and I ran down to get the door.8

“Hey” I said as I hugged Molly.9

I had always admired Molly. She had beautiful, long blonde hair that ran straight down her back and startling blue eyes. She had a model body without the anorexia. Guys were also around her. I am not really jealous, just amazed. It isn’t like I don’t have guys around me.10

I am captain of the dance team, beautiful, dark brunette hair that waved down to mid- back. I had an athletic body, nothing to complain about. But my favorite part of me is my eyes. They were nice, vibrant green, popping out of the white in my eyes.11

After we said our hellos, we went up to my room to start preparing for the showcase. Everything had been organized and we looked over everything for a second and third time.12

“You need to relax, Kassie.” Molly said taking the clipboard from my hands.13

“I’m fine. I just want everything to be perfect.”14

“It will be fine. All you need to do is relax or you are going to go crazy during a dance.”15

“I’m fine.”16

“Come on, we’re going for ice cream.”17

Before I could say anything I was being dragged downstairs and to her car.18

We arrived back to the house an hour later and noticed a car in the driveway. 19

I walked into the house with Molly, following behind me. There was a woman standing in the kitchen, talking to my dad.20

“Hey Dad, I’m back.”21

“Oh, hey kiddo. I thought you were at the school already.” He said startled.22

“No, we just went for ice cream and were coming back for everything. Who is this?” I asked in a polite tone.23

“Hi, I’m Sara.” She said as she reached out for my hand.24

Her hand was smooth as silk and she had a strong grip. As I let go, she had a glimpse of disgust in her eye.25

“Sara is a business partner of mine,” he interjected as we stared at each other, “she is coming to your showcase tonight.”26

“I’m really forward to seeing it.” Sara said smiling.27

“Uh, thanks. Hey, Dad, where is mom? She should be home by now.”28

He suddenly went still, and then relaxed as he spoke, “She is running a little late, but she will be at the showcase. Now I would hurry, so you aren’t late to your own show.”29

Chapter 230

He gave me a hug and kissed me on the forehead.31

“It was nice to meet you Sara.” I said politely.32

“The same here.” She responded and went to sit down.33

There were people everywhere as I tried to prep everyone. Finally I had everyone in place and started the show. Intros were made and the first dance went smoothly. The changing rooms were filled with panic as the dancers got into their next costume.34

Next was my solo. I easily found my dad, sitting in the front row as I danced out onto stage. Next to him sat Sara as promised, but I couldn’t find my mom. I suddenly had tears in my eyes from the anger building up. “How could she miss biggest event of my senior year?”35

When the music finished, I ran off the stage, desperate to hit something. Molly was the one to catch me in her arms. Her costume became quickly saturated with tears falling from my eyes. Sobs shaked my whole body, making myself angrier for ruining my make- up. Molly smoothed out my hair, slowly calming me. Finally, I came in control of my emotions and set out to finish the showcase.36

The end came, and I was relived. My mother had never shown up and by the end I never wanted to talk to her again. 37

I met up with my dad and Sara, after everything was cleaned up, at the house. We were going out for a late dinner, wince I was starving. I never asked where my mom was and did not care. I was too mad at her after she didn’t come.38

I quickly went upstairs to get changed and heard talking downstairs.39

“This is going perfect. She hasn’t even suspected anything of her mother. But we need to hurry before she finds the body.”40

My body went still as a plank. “What did that all mean?” I was frightened by the tone, but I replayed the words in my head, trying to find the connection.41

There was the first thing of it “going perfect” but, what was going perfect? Next was “she hasn’t suspected anything”. Was I the “she”? The last was of something to do with a body.42

As I pieced it together, I fell to the floor dropping my purse as well.43

“Honey, are you ok?” I heard my dad yell up.44

I couldn’t speak, but I was quickly gathering clothes to leave with. I locked the door and hurried to my window. There were three quick taps on the door.45

“Are you coming?” He asked growling impatiently.46

I didn’t answer. My feet slid down to the roof and I pulled out my bag with me, closing the window. My fingers slipped off the window and it fell with a bang to the seal. 47

My eyes widened in fear as the door swung open with an angry force. Our eyes met, holding my body in fright. I had never seen him so angry before.48

Suddenly, he swung his arm around, a black figure in his hand. Too late I realized what it was and I was struck in the left shoulder, flying back, off the roof. I was unconscious before my body hit the ground. 49

The flood lights were bright on my face, as I opened my eyes. I could hear the back door open and the footsteps on the wood porch. Trying to roll to my side, the pain became alarmingly evident. A gasp left my mouth and gave out my location. My dad walked over to me slowly; seeming to enjoy the pain I was in. 50

I squinted my eyes shut, hoping everything was just a dream. But when I opened my eyes, he was still there, along with the torment.51

Time seemed to go by slowly as I just lay in the grass. Suddenly, I was being lifted off the ground and the wounds were noted; my left shoulder and my right ankle. 52

As my head hung down, the black surrounded me, and then finally overcame myself, taking the anguish with it.53

Chapter 354

It was bright out as my eyes fluttered open. The sun’s rays seeped in through the car’s window, right onto my face. My body was stiff as I tried to get into a comfortable position. But not only did the discomfort stop me, but my hands and feet had been tied together. 55

“What’s going on?” I asked, instantly regretting speaking as a hand crashed across my face.56

“Do not speak, unless I tell you to.” It was Sara, whose hand had crossed my face.57

“I don’t want to hear another sound from you, understand?” She asked angrily.58

I didn’t answer right away and that was bad move number two. A blade ran down the top my arm, cutting deep enough to draw blood. I let out a scream and felt another but, cross over the last. I learned fast and repressed any noise.59

“There, see, I’m not that bad.” Sara said sliding her hand over my head.60

I wanted so badly to shy away from her, but I could still fill the blood run out of my body and drip onto the seat.61

Through the window I saw my dad approaching and my mouth became faster than my brain, “Da…” was all I could get out before a needle was stuck in me. Before she drug took full affect, I felt a blanket being pulled over me and the door open when my dad got in, then I was overtaken by the drug.62

Shivers sprinted through my body as I lay cold on the ground. It was dark grey around me, the only light coming from under the door. I couldn’t move, there was almost this numbing feeling, but if I did move, the misery returned like a snake’s strike. I moved in and out of awareness several times, always in the same position. My mind didn’t know if I would ever move again.63

A rectangle of light flooded the room as a fate came into the area. A light flicked on, quickly filling the room with brightness. My eyes fluttered as they adjusted to the new color. For the first time I noticed handcuffs around my wrists, chained to the wall. Also, my legs were banded together by a ragged rope, almost too tight, cutting f some of the circulation. As I moved my eyes from the binding, I noticed my surroundings. Cold, concrete walls stood tall, the ceiling lower than usual. Spider-webs were in all the corners and debris covered the ground.64

My head turned toward the door, where a person still stood. My eyes slowly examined he figure from toe to head. Pounding began in my chest when the face became familiar.65

“Hello, sleepy head.” Her voice was sharp and frustrated. I was already beginning to cringe, knowing the eventual outcome.66

“I thought I would come down and give you the guidelines you must follow.” Sara said pacing the floor.67

“And if I don’t?” I asked in hatred.68

Her foot rammed into my ankle, causing myself to scream out in discomfort. 69

“Don’t back talk me, girl!” She pulled out a knife from behind her. Blood dripped out from my face. I let out a slight whimper, not able to hold it in.70

“Now, are you going to listen and not talk?” It was more a warning than a question, but I still shook my head yes.71

“Good, now you are to not do anything that I do not ask you to. If you betray me, you father will be dead.”72

My eyes were big with shock. Heart pounding inside my chest, ready to explode out. 73

“Now, you are going to be married, then be killed, except it, you will die with your father by your side. Then I will live happily with your father’s money in my pocket.” A smile reached proudly across her face. 74

I wanted so much to run. Hearing my death was right around the corner and I couldn’t do anything about it was terroring. My gasping echoed against the walls, hitting back at me with a hard force. 75

Sara let out a slight laugh at the fear in my eyes. She rested her hand against my check, “When your father comes down, don’t say a word of what I have told you, or he will be dead before you know it.”76

Her hand fell from my face and I flinched automatically. She laughed again and the light turned off, the door closed; leaving only he thin stripe of light.77

Tears raced down my ace and my body shock with the sobs. The pain from my shoulder became evident again, only causing more tears.78

Eventually, sleep found me to my relief and I drifted into a dreamless state.79

I felt a warm piece of cloth, a blanket, slide over me. My body slowly started to warm up and my eyes opened to see an arm. My stomach fluttered when I noticed my dad leaning on the wall. But when I soon remembered my conversation with Sara, tears filled up my eyes, blurring my vision.80

“Oh, baby, don’t be sad. Sean really is a great guy. You will be happy with him.” He said, putting his arm around me. He was totally clueless to his awaiting fate.81

His arm curled around me was comforting, but at the same time, frightening. I was battling with my self, debating to tell him his true fate or not. I was being pulled into the two different directions.82

“Dad, she’s going to kill you.” I wanted to clamp my mouth shut. I hadn’t decided if I wanted to tell him. Again, my mouth was faster than my brain. 83

“What are you talking about; she and I are going to live happily together.” He said confused by my outburst. 84

“She told me her whole vicious plan to take our money,” I yelled too loud, “she is nothing but a gold digger.”85

A foot came between my dad and me, when he kicked me in the gut. The air was instantly taken out of my lungs, causing my body to gasp, returning air to my lungs.86

“Never speak of her in that tone,” he placed his foot on my chest, pressing down, “do you understand?”87

“Yes.” I said through my sobs.88

He gave another blow, before he left upstairs.89

I lay on my side; my right arm clutching my waist. A pool of tears was building on the ground. My mind was running wild through the past events. It felt like my brain was going to explode. I tried to think of better memories instead of my awaiting fate; my mother and I hanging together, my friends, dance, and more good memories. I fell asleep with these thoughts in my head. 90

The door slammed open and the light flashed on. I had already been awake, waiting for someone to come down. Either way, of the person coming down, it wasn’t going to go well.91

Chapter 492

My face stayed blank, not caring that it was Sara walking up to me.93

“You are being moved. Get up!” She yelled.94

I just stared in bewilderment, wondering how that was even possible in my state of condition.95

“I said, GET UP!” She grabbed my left arm, pulling me up. I was holding in a scream, but my lips were not strong enough. Sara’s hand released my arm and threw me to the ground.96

Again, she pulled me up and I went silently as I limped on my ankle, wincing at every step. The stairs were the hardest to get up. I thought Sara was ready to kill me right then. But we eventually got up.97

It was dark outside the windows; a dark wall of trees, lining the back. Lights flicked on in the hallway where Sara started to lead me. The smell of noodles hit my nose like a bullet. My stomach growled loudly, recognizing the hunger it held. I suddenly realized, I hadn’t eaten at all since this all began.98

The room we entered was big, along with a huge, elegant table, chairs all around, in the middle. My dad stepped through the doorway, still looking into the other room and spoke to us, “Dinner is almost ready, sit down.”99

Sara led me over to a chair and shoved me down into it. My eyes squinted shut as the pain ran through my system. Soon after my dad walked in with two bowls, one in each hand. He set one down in front of me and took the seat next to mine. Sara was seated across from us. Conversation was mostly between Sara and my dad, where I answered little questions.100

Dinner ended eventually, after having several helpings to me. Sara did the dishes while my dad helped me back up.101

I was prepared to head back down the stairs, but my dad pushed me past the door. I didn’t say anything as I followed his lead.102

We stopped at the first door we encountered after the stairs. He opened the door and it was like walking into a mental hospital room; everything was white. My eyes were craving for color.103

“Here’s your room, the bathroom is to your right. You can clean up and Sara will be in, in an hour.” He closed the door behind him as he left, leaving me on my own.104

I struggled to get myself into the bathroom. Tears were built up in my eyes when I finally reached the room. I was horrified with what I saw. There was a gash across my cheek, below it was dried blood. Dirt covered my face and my hair was oily. I looked down to my shirt, blood-stained at the site on my bullet wound. My right arm was two more knife marks, forming the shape of a cross.105

It took awhile for me to get my shirt off, but it finally did and I passed out at the sight of the bullet wound and bruises.106

When I woke up, I felt the warm and cushion of a bed. A slight smile came across my face with the happiness of comfort. But it was soon ruined with the reminder of what happened before. I was suddenly having full body convulsions, and then a force was holding me still. Slowly my system gained control again and I looked to the side to Sara holding me down.107

“Give yourself a nice reality check in there.” Quickly I noticed white bandage across my chest and around my shoulder. In addition, I could feel something bracing my ankle. The first time in awhile I felt clean. Had Sara cleaned me up? I didn’t know and I didn’t want to know.108

Sara just gave a sly smile and continued talking, “Now, there are some things you need to get in your head. First, there is no way for you to escape, so don’t even try. Second, if you do I will know instantly and that will be horrible. Third, the stunt you pulled, trying to tell your father what I said is going to cost you. So, if you don’t want the cost going higher, I would stick to these guidelines.109

Sara got up and left the room, leaving me wondering what the cost would be. Sadness fell over me, but my eyes seemed to be out of tears. Either that or I was over the shock and emotion of it all.110

Sunlight streaked across my face through the blinds. I couldn’t remember ever falling asleep, but I guess I had. The door opened and my dad poked in his head, “Breakfast is ready, do you need help moving?”111

I was stunned by the sudden kindness in his voice. Before he had been angry, but I quickly shook my head yes and he helped me out to the back porch.112

Sara was already outside waiting for us. As my dad slid open the door, I was suddenly stunned by the view. Tree surrounded the house, along with mountains. The sun hit the trees, making the illusion of glass on the leaves.113

My dad continued to help me out onto the porch, while I was still taken by the scenery. I quickly shook my head and focused on slowly, relaxing into the chair.114

“Good morning.” Sara said to me.115

I nodded in her direction, but nothing more.116

“The proper response is ‘good morning, Sara’” She said frustrated with me already.117

“Good morning, Sara.” I said as smoothly as I could.118

“That’s better, now have some breakfast.” Sara said holding a plate of eggs over to me.119

I reached out for the plate, but my dad grabbed it and was serving it onto my plate. I didn’t speak for the rest of breakfast; I only sat and ate my food.120

“So, I thought I would take Kassie out shopping for an outfit to meet Sean in.” I heard Sara say to my dad in the kitchen.121

“That sounds like a great idea, some girl bonding time.” 122

I couldn’t believe my ears. He believes her that she wanted to go ‘girl bonding’. Sara must be drugging him.123

They returned to the porch and addressed me with huge grins, “Would you like to go shopping with me?” Sara waited patiently for a response. I knew very well by now, her questions were statements. I would have no choice whether I wanted to go or not. I didn’t know what she had planned for me, but it definitely was not shopping. Her eyes were burning into me as she waited for an answer.124

“Sure.” I said quietly.125

“Great. We’ll leave in half an hour.” 126

She strolled into the house and down the hallway, while my father helped me up and to my room.127

I was disgusted with her type of humor. Laughing away in her room about whatever she had planned. How does she expect me to move on my own? It is impossible enough with the help from my dad. Why didn’t she just marry him for the money? But that answer was too simple. They couldn’t marry without there being suspicions about the disappearance of my mother, so they would have me marry, and then be killed. But, my mother was gone and she couldn’t help me through any of this. A silent tear ran the length of my face, then dropped to my shirt; staining it with its acid.128

My dad left me in my room to get dressed, a very unworkable task. I honestly tried to do it myself, but eventually had to ask my dad for help; very embarrassing. I wore jeans and a turtleneck to hide everything. Still, I would stick out like a sore thumb, bruises or not, being it is summer; but it wasn’t my choice.129

Finally, I made it to the car and Sara and I were off; into another painful event.130

Chapter 5131

The driveway seemed to go on forever as Sara sped through the trees, while the car left a huge dust cloud behind us. The road ended and we turned on to what appeared to be the main road. There was some traffic but it didn’t seem to be a big town. We swiftly made a left turn heading some direction; it looked to be north by the way the sun was positioned. Soon buildings began to appear on the side, most had to do with the word “Pinetop”. 132

“Where are we?” It came out as one of those repetitive questions you ask when you’re little and want to know everything that is going on.133

A light blinded me as a sharp point cut through my left, upper arm. The blood stained my shirt instantly as I felt it run down my arm. I took in a breath quickly then spoke no more. Watching the road past beneath me, I hadn’t realized we were out of town. 134

The dirt kicked up behind us as we traveled at a speed I had never gone. Suddenly we jerked to a stop, making my head banged against the glass.135

We sat silently in the car, no movement from either of us. As the dust settled, I heard the door suddenly open. My heart started to beat faster; sweat building on my skin. I watched as Sara slowly made her way around the front of the car and to my door. She had a look of a crazed manic on her face. Her hands twitching with excitement and I was instantly aware of our ‘bonding time’ activity.136

The door swung open quickly and Sara’s hand reached toward me, locking onto my arm tightly. Sara jerked me out of the car and onto the rock on the ground. Tears were already forming in my eyes as the pain began to flow through my body. Sara started off on her rampage, “Your father is so stupid; caught in his stupid fantasy of us. And you trying to tell him, well, here is your punishment.”137

Her foot swung behind her, then came colliding into my side along side the other many bruises. The kicking continued for awhile, eventually my body became numb to the feeling. I guessed as soon as Sara figured I wasn’t feeling any pain, she went to the car and came back with her favorite torture tool; the knife. My skin was cut so many times, I wasn’t sure I would be able to recognize myself.138

I didn’t know when it had ended, but all I remember is being lifted out of the car, then it all went black.139

My body kept still as I woke, any movement pulled on the dried blood that was holding the cuts together. I lay still, watching the sun rise through the shades slowly. There was a knock on the door and than it opened, preceding it was my dad.140

“Good morning baby,” he said smiling as he sat on the edge of my bed, “did you have a good time yesterday?”141

I stared at him as if he was blind, but noticed that I had new clothes on that covered most of my skin.142

“Oh…um, yeah, sure.” I stuttered in response.143

“That’s good. It’s nice you guys are getting along.” He said standing up.144

Sure, defiantly getting along. I thought to myself as my eyes rolled.145

“Well, breakfast is ready, do you need any help?”146

I thought for a minute on this, debating the choices. If he helped, he would surely get in an argument with Sara and I would get beat. On the other hand, if he didn’t, I wouldn’t know if I could make it on my own, making Sara inpatient. Either way there was a punishment, but the argument would have a worse outcome.147

“No, thank you. I think I can do it.” Then he left.148

I worked carefully rolling out of bed softly, landing on my feet gently. My skin was pulling it burst open, but none did. Slowly, I hobbled to the bathroom to freshen up.149

My face hadn’t been harmed; a smart move on Sara’s side to no reviled anything. But I knew the rest of me was not fine. Cautiously my hands lifted my shirt to revile my torso. My stomach became queasy, but steadied after a moment. There was not a spot untouched by a bruise or the blade cut. My skin was close to a clay color from the bleeding. I was surprised I haven’t dies from blood loss, but I was getting close.150

I couldn’t look anymore and let my shirt drop back down. I made my way to the porch and found my seat between Sara and my dad. 151

Breakfast passed in the same manor as yesterday, while I stayed in a tranquil mode, finally broken by my dad.152

“So Sara said you guys didn’t find an outfit and that you were going to go try again today.”153

My face went frozen for a moment before it returned to a smooth blank feature. I just nodded my head and repressed into my tranquil state. Another beating was waiting for me, but I will not let it happen.154

This time as we drove, I watched carefully where we went, to know where we were. We stopped about a mile down the dirt road and again Sara waited for the dirt to settle before she came over to my side. This time I expected it and landed on my feet only to have an unexpected blow to my jaw to stagger my balance and send me to the ground. And so it continued and I lay on the ground taking it in. After what seemed forever, I couldn’t feel anything. It took me a second to realize Sara had stopped and was staring off into the forest. I stayed silent and started to hear voices in the distance. As Sara was distracted, I took this as my opportunity to run. I got up wobbling, then took off into the woods; pushing the intense pain to the back of my mind.155

All I heard next was a loud noise, then the sudden fierce pain in my left leg, overpowering everything. I went straight to the ground, half aware of what was going on. The next passing events were in and out. A cloud of dirt with the reeve of an engine, colors of light with a siren screeching in the distance, the feeling of pressure on my leg, and a feeling of something warm against my neck; then nothing.156

Chapter 6157

Beep. Beep. Beep. The constant noise was annoying in my head. There was also a bright light piercing its way through my eyelids. My eyes flew open quickly realizing my whereabouts’. 158

I had been in the hospital before when I was eight. My appendix was taken out and I had to stay there for a couple of days.159

The thought of Sara quickly overtook my mind. She was going to be furious that I was out of her hand; though I can’t remember how that happened. All I could think was that she was going to kill my dad. 160

At once, I pulled the IV out of my right hand and threw off the oxygen tube from under my nose. I swung myself off the bed, with the difficulty of a cast around my right ankle. Once my feet hit the cold floor, I fell. Nurses came rushing in as they saw this, helping me back into the uncomfortable bed. I struggled against them, until I was finally calm from the drug dripping through my newly replaced IV. My eyelids grew heavy, finally beating me.161

Voices bounced off the walls of the room. I listened while keeping my charade of sleep. 162

“We can’t find any information on her and sadly no one has come in for her. We are waiting till she awakes to ask her, her name.” It was a soothing male voice, most likely a doctor talking, but to who?163

Reluctantly, I opened my eyes to see two men and a women standing near the door. One of the men was holding the woman around the waist, clearly stating they were together.164

The doctor turned to me and smiled when he saw me looking at them.165

“Hello. I’m Dr. Damien and I will be looking after you here.” His voice was comforting and as I looked closer I noticed his calming blue eyes. 166

“Can I ask you a few questions?” I was still staring at his eyes as I shook my head yes.167

“What’s your name?”168

I hesitated, not knowing what to say. My name would lead to Sara and my dad. Sara would kill my dad before they got her, but maybe not.169

My heartbeat raised as my mind raced through the idea.170

On the other hand, if I told them, they might be able to save my father because if they get caught or he stays with her longer, he will most likely be killed.171

The doctor injected more morphine into my IV, calming my body. While the medication pulled me into a deep sleep, I gave an answer, “Kassie Love.”172

I was lying in the bed peacefully, watching he people walk by my room. Then a person came in. At first, I couldn’t see who it was, but the light caught their face and I was instantly frightened. Sara was suddenly at my side, her knife at my throat, an angry passion on her face.173

“How could you betray me, you pathetic girl?” The knife then crossed across my neck and the blood rushed out.174

My eyes flew open to my hospital room, sweat flowing down my face. I lifted my hand to my throat making sure it was a dream. I was still trying to catch my breath when Dr. Damien came in. 175

“Are you okay?” He asked checking the monitors. 176

I couldn’t respond as I was still in shock of the whole dream. My eyes stayed on the door, watching for any signs of Sara.177

The doctor continued, “Well, I do have some news for you. We found where you live and tried to contact your parents. Right now, the cops are trying to locate your parents. Can you tell me where they might be?”178

I was still watching the door, half-listening to what he was saying. It was something about a location and looking. 179

A hand started o wave in front of me, breaking myself from the door and back to the doctor. 180

“Kassie, do you know where your parents are?” Dr. Damien asked again. Looking straight into my eyes.181

“Kas…”182

“Here.” I said cutting him off.183

He seemed surprised by this answer, looking out of the room and then back to me. My focus had returned to the door.184

“They’re in the hospital?” Dr. Damien said questioning.185

I shook my head slowly, “No.”186

I could tell from the corner of my eye the one- word answers were getting on his case, but he tried to cover it.187

“Do you mean in the city?”188

“Maybe.” Suddenly realizing I didn’t know where I was nor was I going to ask.189

This really got to him.190

“Kassie. You need to tell me exactly where they are.”191

I was at once overwhelmed with anger. I was through getting yelled at.192

“As far as I know, my mom is dead, my dad will be if he is not, and I don’t even know where I am, but he might be close. I DON’T KNOW!”193

Tears fell ad I was gasping for air, not being able to grab it. My body was grabbing for breath. Dr. Damien slipped the oxygen mask over my nose and mouth, but I passed out. 194

The room now had several nurses crowded in checking everything and getting more medication. I could feel the morphine slowly drip into my veins. I heard Dr. Damien talking to someone in the hallway, “She has been through a lot. More than I had expected. It appears that she is the girl that they have been searching for and her father for the past couple of weeks. They believe they killed the wife and mother.”195

This took me off guard and I wasn’t going to let it fly.196

“That is not true.” I tried to sit up, but it was a failed attempt. “I had nothing to do with my mom’s death. I was taking against my own will and have been tortured since then. Do you think I did this to myself? And, yes, I have been through a lot, so don’t assume till you hear the story from first person.” I closed my eyes and tried to calm myself down, but it took a lot of work and I was exhausted. 197

The nurses around me were just staring and I ignored it. They seemed almost frightened by this out burst; either for my health or theirs.198

Cautiously Dr. Damien came over to me, “I am not saying you were and you need to keep calm. I know it is hard and anxiety come easier to those who have been through a lot. Detectives are going to be coming in later to talk to you, okay? Another thing, I don’t believe you did this to yourself, but your are hurting yourself more by moving and getting over worked. You have three broken ribs, a broken ankle, two bullet wounds; one to your left shoulder and the other in your left leg, many blade cuts; some deeper than others, and many bruises. I haven’t seen a part of you unscathered. So, please get rest and keep yourself calm by not getting worked up.” He moved away from the bed, “I will be back later to check on you”, and then he was out the door.199

Chapter 7200

The couple I had seen before now entered the room.201

“Hello Kassie,” It was the man that spoke first, “my name is Stan and this is Shelby.” He wrapped his arm around the waist of the woman.202

“We are the ones that found you.” The woman, Shelby said.203

I studied their figures for a moment, putting them to memory. Stan had an okay, no defined muscles. He had brunette hair with blue-grey eyes, like a stormy sea. Shelby was more defined in the body, with brunette hair and hazel eyes. Both their skins were white, but tanned. They seemed like a nice couple too.204

They waited for a response from me, but I just couldn’t get any words out. 205

“We are making sure you get the best care.” Shelby added after a moment of silence.206

“We’re hoping to get to know you better. We don’t want you to feel lonely.” Stan said smiling.207

I began to think that that was why Shelby fell for Stan; his smile. He had perfect teeth, shinning like white pearls across his face.208

I gave them a small smile, it seemed to content them. They began to back out of the room, “Well, we will let you get some rest. Call if you need anything,” then they left the room.209

The area fell silent again and I looked out the window into the hallway. Stan and Shelby were sitting with their backs to the wall, hunched over in a tired facade. I was starting to miss my friends, wondering if they were wondering where I was.210

Chapter 8211

I decided to rest my eyes for a moment and when I opened them back up there were two officers talking to Shelby and Stan.212

The officers nodded their heads then walked into my room.213

“Hello, Kassie. I am Officer Ken and this is Officer Larry. We need to ask you a few questions. Feel free to take your time answering.” Officer Ken said pulling a chair up to the bed.214

I nodded my head for them to start. 215

“Ok, can you tell me exactly what happened?” He said with his pen ready on the paper.216

I took a slow breath, “It was the night of my dance showcase and I had met Sara before the performance. My mom wasn’t there and I was so up set. I didn’t ask any questions on my mom and we were going out for dinner. I was up in my room and heard my dad and Sara downstairs talking about a body. That’s when it all clicked; they killed my mom or something. I had to get out; so I packed and was headed to the window when he knocked on the door. When I was out the window the came in, then…then,” the officers waited patiently for me to continue, “he…shot…me.” 217

Tears fell silently from my eyes while the officers consumed the information.218

I continued on with the events, “When I woke up I was in a dark, cold room; wrists and ankles roped together. The pain was overwhelming. I couldn’t move.” I took a moment to compose myself, before I got too worked up. Taking deep breaths and letting them out slowly.219

“Kassie, we understand this is hard, but…”220

“NO! You do not understand how hard it is. Have you ever lost your mom, then been shot? Along with constant abuse after, beyond the point of any comprehension.” I then threw the covers off to reveal the damage; lifting my shirt to reveal the many knife cuts.221

Their faces went white, then I put the covers back over and the color returned to their faces.222

“Through all of that, I still had to walk and act like nothing happened. So, no, you don’t understand.”223

Just then Dr. Damien walked in, probably after hearing the yelling, “Ok, gentlemen, Kassie needs to get some rest that is enough for today.”224

The officers bowed their heads and left. I turned and stared out the window at the scenery, while the doctor came over to my side. 225

“Are you feeling ok?” He asked turning to examine the machines. 226

“Fine.” I said in a quiet, exhausted voice.227

“Ok, just get some rest. I will be in later.”228

And I did what he said or at least I tried. The sound emanating in the room was just louder when no one was in here.229

“Shelby, Stan.” I called out, in a small voice. Amazingly, they heard me and came into the room looking worried.230

“Is everything okay?” Shelby asked hurrying to my side. She looked so exhausted, as if she hadn’t slept for days. 231

“I’m fine. It was just so quiet in here. I wanted someone to talk to.” I said warily. 232

“Oh, sure, we would love to talk to you. What do you want to talk about?” Shelby responded, pulling a chair next to me, while Stan stood behind Shelby, his hands on her shoulder.233

“Um,” I struggled to find a topic, then it hit me, “how did you two meet?”234

Shelby and Stan smiled, and then looked at each other before returning to me. Stan laughed, “That is actually, a really funny story.” 235

“We were both skiing at Sunrise Resort and I was having a great time; feeling the wind on my face, when all of the sudden, I was bowled over by this guy.” Shelby said turning to Stan and poking him in the stomach.236

“Anyway,” Stan started, “I felt so bad that I had run her over, I just had lost control. Then I saw she had taken off her gloves and one of her hands was bleeding.” 237

Stan took Shelby’s right hand and I saw the scar on the back of her hand.238

“He sent me into a bush and it cut threw the glove. I knew I should have been angry at him, but he was so kind. He walked me over to the first aid and stayed with me the whole time.”239

Shelby kissed Stan’s hand then turned back to me, “Since then, we have been inseparable. We got married almost a year ago, this coming August is our anniversary.”240

I smiled. It was nice to hear that someone had found their true love, while I was stuck in this nightmare. My eyes were beginning to droop; the talking was working.241

“Would you like to sing you asleep?” Shelby asked, probably noticing my eyes.242

I nodded as she began; her voice was beautiful, an angelic voice. I fell asleep quickly to her voice.243

Chapter 9244

“Is she awake?” I heard as I woke, I had heard this voice so many times in my life, always there when I needed her. Tears almost came to my eyes as I realized how much I missed that voice.245

Before anyone could answer, I kept my eyes closed and responded, “Yes, I am Molly.”246

I heard her feet shuffled quickly to the side of my bed. My eyes opened to see an excited, bright- faced Molly. She had flowers and balloons in one hand, while the other held a huge poster board that looked like a card.247

Quickly, Molly set the gifts on the table in the corner and hugged me tightly. I took in a quick breath with the sudden ping of pain.248

Molly heard and at once released me, my head falling back onto the bed.249

“Sorry, I forgot. I was just so excited to see you.” Molly said, twitching to find some was to comfort me.250

“It’s okay, no harm. How did you find out I was here? I asked, wondering the story she had been told.251

“Well, I guess the cops called the school to get tour emergency card information, and my mom’s name is on it. So, I gather they decided to call her and she had asked where you were. And here I am a day later.”252

“And where is here exactly?” Now realizing, I had no idea where I was.253

“Pinetop, Arizona.” Don’t you know that?” She asked in question.254

“No.” I said quietly.255

I looked back over at Molly through the corner of my eye, to see her face was in confusion. I kept my eyes looking at the outside while I explained, “I don’t know what you have been told, but obliviously, not the whole thing.” I continued on, not checking to see her reaction, “You can’t see now, but I have been through a lot. The blankets and gown are covering it up. I would show you, but I don’t believe you could handle it.” This time I did turn to look at her. Her face lay blank, staring past me.256

“Can I see?” She asked suddenly.257

It took a minute to comprehend this question before finally responding, “Are you sure?” I was weary when she shook her head, but went on. 258

The covers slid easily off my legs, and then I lifted my shirt, revealing the last portion of the damage.259

Tears filled her eyes and I quickly covered myself again ad opened my arm to comfort her. Sobs shook her body, the tears wetting my shirt.260

“It’s okay. I’m fine.” I told her and she pulled her head up; her eyes red and puffy.261

“But your not. You wouldn’t be here if you were.” She said through her sobs.262

“But I’m okay, because I am here,” I took a breath, “If I wasn’t, I would be way worse.”263

She didn’t say anything and I patted the empty space next o me on the bed. Molly climbed into the spot and settled in while I turned on the TV. It felt like old times, once again, when we would lay on the couch watching TV for hours. And we stayed that way until I heard Molly’s even breathing, telling me she was asleep. So, I turned off the TV and drifted off myself, enjoying the peace.264

Chapter 10265

“Kassie?” I heard Shelby’s voice softly by my head.266

“Yes.” I answered, slowly opening my eyes.267

“The officers are here again, to ask more questions.” She said still speaking softly.268

That’s when it hit me that Molly was still sleeping next to me. I nodded my head to Shelby, and then turned to Molly, “It’s time to wake up.”269

She groaned, but woke up; sitting up and looking around the room, “Oh, it wasn’t a dream.”270

I could sense more tears and rubbed my hand on her back, “Some officers are coming in to ask questions, do you want to stay or leave?”271

“I’ll stay.” Molly said quietly, before moving off the bed and into the chair, taking my hand.272

The officers walked into the room, taking seats at the end of the bed.273

“Good afternoon, Kassie.” Officer Ken said nodding his head.274

I didn’t respond, they weren’t exactly on my good side since the last time.275

“And who is this?” he asked pointing his pen toward Molly.276

“I’m Molly.” She answered.277

“Hello,” he said back then started his questioning, “Now, last time you were talking about a ‘Sara’, who is she?”278

I took a minute before responding, “She was the head of the whole operation, or partly.”279

Ken was about to intercede, but I held up a finger to stop him.280

“There was another person in this, some Sean guy, I never met him. Supposedly I was supposed to marry him so he could get the family money, then my father and I was to be killed.”281

The officers took a minute to write down everything. Meanwhile, Molly had left the room, breaking into tears. 282

“Ok, now, one more question. Do you know where they are?” He asked moving closer in.283

“No.” I answered straightly.284

“Ok, thank you for your help. We will tell you if anything evolves.”285

The officers stood up and exited, and then Molly entered after followed by Shelby.286

“I’m sorry.” Molly said walking up to me.287

“It’s okay,” I said grabbing her hand, “it was a lot for you to handle.”288

She nodded, but calmed when Shelby placed her hand on her shoulder.289

“Everything’s fine now, Kassie is safe with us.” Shelby said, a smile crossing her face.290

I could see Molly about to lose it again, so I switched the subject, “You know, I never got to look at the card you brought.”291

Suddenly, her face lit up with much enthusiasm. She jumped out of her chair and skipped to retive the card; smiling the whole time. She handed the card to me and I as not surprised by the overdid color. On the card it said, “Get Well Soon”, done in huge letter with color al around it. When I opened it up, there wasn’t a space that was not covered by a name. And in the same big letters it wrote, “We Miss You!”292

Water filled my eyes as I saw the names of most of the students from my school, along with the entire faculty.293

“I love it, thank you.” I said, the tear rolling down my cheeks.294

Molly came closer into me, giving me a hug.295

“I know you would like it.” Molly said happily.296

“It’s wonderful.” Shelby inserted.297

It made me realize that Stan wasn’t there.298

“Where is Stan?” I asked looking out into the hallway.299

“Oh, he went home to check up on things,” she said, “He will be back in an hour.”300

“Ok,” I responded, “How ‘bout we watch a movie.” I said to both of them.301

They both shook their heads and we asked for a movie and watched it till we all fell asleep.302

Chapter 11303

“The news isn’t good. They found the house, but what they found was shocking.” It was Stan’s voice that I recognized in the room.304

“How bad?” Shelby asked.305

I opened my eyes right before Stan was going to speak.306

“Oh, you’re awake.” He said taken by surprise.307

“Ok, well then, I can tell you both.” He said turning to the bed, taking Shelby’s and my hand.308

“They found the house and what they found may shock you,” he stopped, looking at me and I nodded my head, knowing what was coming, “they found your father dead.”309

I kept my face composed, already knowing this was the outcome, but the emotions were there. I had just become so use to being able to mask them.310

Stan and Shelby waited for the emotions to fall out, but they were going to be waiting for awhile.311

“Anything else?” I finally said, wondering if there was anymore news.312

Stan shook his head, “It appears that Sara had been long gone by the looks of things.”313

I nodded and stared out the window, watching a plane fly over. It seemed to a nice, clear summer day in Pinetop.314

“Are you ok?” Shelby asked worried.315

“I’m fine, kind of expected it.” I answered, closing my eyes, taking deep breaths.316

Stan and Shelby stayed quiet for a minute before I heard the angelic voice of Shelby singing softly to a tune unfamiliar to me.317

“What are you singing?” I asked Shelby, turning to look at her.318

“Oh, um, A Mother’s Pray.” She answered, continuing with the song and I fell asleep to her voice.319

Chapter 12320

Molly and I were watching TV as Stan and Shelby walked in with huge grins.321

“Moll, could we have a moment alone with Kassie.” Stan asked politely.322

“Sure.” Molly said leaving the room.323

It was amazing as I thought back over how close Stan, Shelby, and I were. In the week I had known them, we have learned a lot about each other. They knew all about my dancing, my friends, and school, what I wanted to do in the future (or at least, wanted to do; dance). I learned how they met, Stan’s work, the city of Pinetop, and I already knew their house layout. So, when they came closer with those smiles, I knew it was really good news.324

“We have some good news,” Stan said, as I had expected, “we spoke to our lawyers and have gotten the paper work.”325

He handed me a paper and I read over it quickly, stopping on one word in specific, “Adoption”. My mouth dropped out of the shock of this announcement. My heart was pounding with the excitement and the heart monitor was following the rhythm. 326

“Are you serious?” I asked, gasping for breath.327

“Yes, we want to take you in; to be part of the family.” Shelby’s voiced jumped up at the end, to hard to hold in the excitement.328

“You don’t have to give an answer now, you can think about it.” Stan answered, calmly with some excitement showing. 329

I didn’t want to wait. I had no other family; no relatives. I was ready to become part of their family. They were as close as family that I had through the whole predicament. 330

“No, I can tell you now,” I said waiting out the moment, “I want to be part of your family.” 331

“Oh, really.” Shelby pushed out, tears of happiness already falling.332

“Yes.” 333

I was instantly being crushed by Shelby’s hug and Stan interceded before I could.334

“Honey, you’re squishing her.” Stan said, placing his hands on her shoulders.335

“Oh, I am so sorry,” Shelby said, quickly getting up, “I was just so overwhelmed; I have a daughter.”336

“Don’t worry, I’m fine,” smiling at them both, “I am glad to become your daughter.”337

Shelby came back down to my face and kissed my forehead gently, and then Stan did the same.338

“Well, I need to go finalize everything,” Stan said holding Shelby down from bouncing off the walls, “by tomorrow you will be Kassidy Anne Litman.”339

My mouth grew to a grin, forming from ear to ear. I never thought of the idea adoption, but it felt whole. The missing pieces of a family filled again. I hadn’t really missed my dad (turning against me), my mom on the other hand, I missed her a lot. I still do not know what happened to her and my feelings tell me I do not want to know. Suddenly, Shelby interrupted my thought, thankfully, “So, we already have your room set up, very modern, you will love it.”340

“Is it white?” I asked worried. I didn’t want anything that reminded me of my time with Sara. 341

Shelby was thrown off by the question, but answered promptly, “The walls are and the bed.” 342

“Do you think we can paint the walls in a bright color? White is not a favorite pastime.” I said, hoping I didn’t hurt her feelings.343

“No, we can totally do that. Any color in particular?”344

“Anything but white.”345

She seemed to be ok with the idea and it made me happy. Stan and Shelby were the perfect people to be in a family with. When the saying, “You can’t pick your family” it doesn’t apply to me and I got to pick the most wonderful people in the world.346

Molly was waiting outside the door and I could tell she was getting impatient; so I called her in. She had a skip to her step, anticipating the news that she could not hear before.347

“Ok, well, I night as well tell you then, Shelby and Stan are going to adopt me.” I said excitedly.348

For a second her face fell, and then was back up and she was jumping up and down, “I’m so happy for you.” 349

I smiled to her response, enthused that she approved of the situation. But I still did wonder about her reaction before and would ask later when we were alone. I got my wish when Shelby got up, winked at me and left, leaving Molly and I alone.350

“Ok, now tell me why you are upset.” I said abruptly, taking Molly off-guard.351

“What are you talking about; I am happy for you.” She said turning her eyes from mine.352

“I know you too well and you know that. What have you upset?”353

Molly was hesitant before she spoke, “I just though we would take you in.”354

Tears were at the edges of her eyes and I took her hands in mine, “The reasons I am having Shelby and Stan take me in are: you are going to college, I have years of rehab, and I am a totally different person than I was a month or so ago, before this all happened. The way things are going, I will be constant alert.”355

“I guess that makes sense.” Molly answered, the tears brimming over.356

I pulled her into a hug and waited till she was calm.357

“Are you going to be ok?” I asked worried.358

“Yeah, I need to go call my mom to check in; I forgot to do it this morning.” Molly said turning for the door.359

“Ok,” and she was gone.360

I felt horrible after seeing her cry, but it was for the best. I won’t even be in college for the fall because I haven’t even graduated. I missed my finals. It wasn’t a pleasant thought to have to redo the second semester of senior year.361

I lay awhile, just watching all the different people walk by till Stan walked in.362

“It’s official.” He said happily.363

He gave me a hug, and then pulled a gift from behind his back. Just as he gave it to me, Shelby walked in. I pulled out the tissue paper from the bag and found a square box. I could guess from the outside it was probably jewelry. My assumption was correct as I lifted the lid, but the beauty of the object left me speechless and stunned.364

Lying softly on the cream silk was a beautiful arrangement of diamonds in a heart shape. Silver outlined the diamonds, making it shine even more.365

“Do you like it?” Shelby asked, after I hadn’t said anything.366

“Of course, it is beautiful, thank you.” I said quickly, not wanting them to get the wrong impression.367

“It is just a reminder of how much we love you, and that we always will.” Shelby said, bending down to kiss me on the forehead.368

“We’re glad you like,” Stan added, “would you like help to put it on?” 369

I nodded my head and Stan took the necklace out and put it around my neck. He kissed me on the cheek and headed to the door.370

“Where are you going? I asked out of impulse.371

“I have to go to work; got to bring home the bacon.” He laughed.372

“Oh, ok, have fun.”373

I had been so lost in my world, I had forgotten about the real world; a place where you have to work for a living. It pulled me back into the reality of my situation.374

“Are you guys really ok with taking me in?” I asked Shelby.375

“Of course, why wouldn’t we be?”376

“Well, with my situation, it’s not going to be easy and…” I paused, worried about finishing my thought.377

“It’s okay, what is it?” Shelby took my hand and soothes me gently with her thumb.378

“I am afraid you will be in constant danger because of me.”379

“Don’t worry, we will be fine. We won’t let anything happen to you or us.”380

I shook me head and cleared the moisture from my eyes. Shelby kissed me on the cheek and told me to get some rest. I did as she said and was out quickly.381

Molly walked into my room with a sad look on her face. For the past several days, we have spent as much time together as we could. She was leaving today to go back home. She had to go and get ready for college; one thing I will not be doing.382

“Don’t worry, you’ll see me again.” I joked as she came closer.383

“I know,” Molly blubbered.384

“Come on, give me a hug. Next time you see me, I will be walking.”385

We hugged and said our final good-byes, and then Molly was gone. All I could think was at least she would be away from the danger here.386

I didn’t even know if I could keep my word of being able to walk by winter break. Carefully I moved my arms to push myself up. It wasn’t a failed attempt, but also not the most comfortable on my shoulder and ribs, but I did get up. Next I swung my legs to the side. I knew I was going against the doctor’s wishes, but I needed to know. Nobody seemed to watching, so I push off the bed and put my feet to the ground. I held myself up with my hands grabbing on the bed for support and pushed my feet forward. My legs collapsed and my hands grabbed the table, but only succeeding by taking the vase of flowers with me. The sound of the vase breaking against the ground quickly alerted the nurses and they came flooding in. Two male nurses picked me up and placed me on the bed, while another nurse was tending to the glass splattered on the floor. The nurse quickly checked for any cuts from the glass, then asked how I got on the ground.387

“I was trying to walk.” I said softly, feeling stupid for trying.388

The nurse nodded then told me to stay in the bed from now on. I nodded then turned away from him. Next I heard was Shelby’s frantic voice, “Are you okay?”389

“I’m fine.”390

“Why were you trying to walk?”391

“To see if I could. I told Molly before she left that by winter break I would be walking and so I tried to see if I could now.”392

“Oh, honey. I was on way to tell you that next week you were going to be coming home and starting therapy.”393

I couldn’t say anything. I was shocked, it seemed like I was going to be in here forever. Now I don’t know if my stupidity cost me another week or more.394

Just then Dr.Damien walked in, “I heard you were trying to walk.”395

I shook my head and waited to hear the consequences.396

“Do you feel any pain anywhere?”397

I had to stop and listen to my body, but nothing was screaming at me.398

“No.”399

“Well then, you got lucky. You will still be able to leave next week.”400

He checked everything out, and then left me to my happiness of freedom.401

The week seemed to past by slowly, but finally it was my last day and I would be going home. The nurses came in to say goodbye and gave little stuffed animals or other little special objects. I would be sure that nothing happened to any of it.402

Dr.Damien walked in for his last check-up, “How are we feeling today?”403

“Wonderful.” I said with a smile that crossed my face.404

“Well, make sure you do your therapy thoroughly and stay out of trouble. I don’t want to have to see you back here under bad conditions.”405

We laughed and then helped me into wheelchair. He rolled me out into the hallway where Shelby and Stan were waiting.406

“Thank you for everything doctor.” Stan said reaching his hand out to shake it with Dr. Damien.407

“Yes, thank you.” Shelby added.408

“Your welcome and I will see Kassie in a month for a check-up.” Dr. Damien said, and then turned to return back to his work.409

“Are you ready?” Stan asked, taking position behind me.410

“Completely ready.” I answered with much excitement.411

Stan started off on the journey to my new home. My eyes were wide open the whole way home. Everything was new to me. The trees looked totally different then from the window of the hospital. I had the car window rolled down and the air felt pure caressing my skin. The smell was a mix of pine and rain, a wonderful combination. I was so entranced by the landscape; I hadn’t heard Shelby calling my name. 412

“Kassie?”413

“Oh, sorry, yeah?”414

“I was wondering if you would like to go out for dinner.”415

“That sounds wonderful.”416

“Do you like steak?’417

“I love it.”418

“Ok, then we has the place for you.”419

We all smiled and I returned back to the scenery. I had grown up in a city surrounded by forest, but something about his one brought me peace.420

The car pulled into the driveway of a white house. The front door was a large wooden door, with an intricate design. A curvy walkway winded itself up to the door; grass surrounding the house. There was no fence around the house, giving it the feeling of openness. 421

Stan pulled the wheelchair from the back and came over to help me in. while he pushed me to the door, I took the chance to look around. I noticed there were other houses around, but not up against each other. It was great to see a good area between the houses.422

My attention was pulled back to the house when Shelby opened the door to the house.423

“Welcome home.” Shelby and Stan said simultaneously.424

Stan pushed me over the threshold and into the wide-open entranceway. The way everthign was placed it felt as peaceful as the outside. To my right was the living room with a big comfy couch, complete with a full surround sound and flat screen. DVDs filled the shelves around the TV. I pulled my eyes to the left to find a dining table set for three. I bet if I looked at the table it was clear enough to see my reflection in the oil on the wood.425

“Do you like it?” Shelby asked moving forward.426

“I love it.”427

“Well let’s give you the complete tour before we head back out for dinner. Stan could you bring in her bag.” Shelby said taking hold of the wheelchair’s handles.428

“Ok.” And Stan went back out to the car.429

Shelby continued through the hallway and turned into the kitchen. In the middle of the floor was a huge island; about a third bigger than a normal size.430

It got me to thinking who was the cook in the family, because it was a hobby of mine. Pulling my eyes from the island I looked to see the cabinets were a deep oak and the appliances stainless steel. It gave the kitchen a nice appearance.431

“Stan has the passion of a cook.” Shelby entered, answering my mental question.432

“Cool, maybe he could teach me something.” I said, joyfully.433

“I would love to.” Stan said, coming into the kitchen.434

I noticed a quick exchange between Stan and Shelby.435

“Ok, let’s go see your new room.” Shelby said, turning my chair around and turning right down another hall. We stopped in front of the first door on our left.436

“Kassie’s Room,” was printed elegantly across the door.437
