The Gospel According to Ogreatbaldone

As Kevin travelled the lands, spreading the gospel of poetry, he acquired followers in his quest to teach the worlds people to free their hearts and open their minds and to give praise in poetry.1

He was joined by a Monk . A soldier who offered protection and wisdom in the ways of the world. A companion with whom he could share his thoughts and concerns. On their journey together they met and were joined by a woman of unearthly poise, whose accented voice brought merriment to them and whose wisdom was always flawless. She baked the cakes which sustained them on their journeys. AnnD, as she was called, with Kevin and the Monk, made up the foundation upon which Kevin's kingdom was to be built. A community of free thinkers, from all walks of life.2

As they travelled from nation to nation preaching prose and poetry, they were joined by more kindred spirits who sought wisdom in the ways of Kevin. 3

Symitar-her sweetness spoke to the masses, and her level headedness always shone through in the heat of the moment. Under her tutelage many would learn.4

Kasdaye, the poet of the people. She led by example, fearlessly entering the realm of the chatterbox, taking abuse upon herself in an effort to teach the masses. Not all accepted her, but most received her warmly.5

Kevin even acquired his own Judas, but one of a different ilk, Judas Denied travelled the lands with Symitar and Kasdaye accepting new recruits and spreading the word. 6

Their numbers grew and their message spread across the land, bringing in disciples from all parts of the world, under one banner, one of free speech and acceptance, one of thinking and tolerance, one of emotions shared and friendships built within a common cause to bring the world into the new light that is poetry.7

They were joined by Maatkara-mystic and seeker of truth, she worked with her fellow disciples side by side. 8

Gozling- her raunchy humor and authoritative ways were disarming to those who would cause trouble. A peacekeeper of the highest order, was she. 9

Smilingspider- a Welsh enigma, a quiet sort, he sought truth and expression, always. 10

On their first journey to the great white north, they were joined by Barbara- a maritime soul, she changed her name from Lillandra when she turned from the past and towards the future. The masses clung to her giving spirit. 11

Also while in Canada they met Ogreatbaldone- a preacher of peace and seeker of happiness whose 20 suggestions were easier to follow than the ten commandments. He had a willingness to grow and learn as a writer. When asked by the Monk to join their ranks he accepted readily, awed by their acceptance. 12

Returning to The British isles once more they happened upon a Magi with a piercing stare by the name of Random master. A lover of games and music and an accountant by trade, with the biblical birth name of Matthew. He helped keep the peace across the kingdom 13

Another monk joined their ranks, one of different attributes. Smallmonk - an affable young monk  with a habit ofrunning in circles and singing show tunes after he had been drinking. He was always asking Kevin to turn his water into whisky. He often joined Kasdaye in the dark world of the chatterbox. His light banter kept the masses from overstepping. 14

From the far side of the world came another disciple. Vonnie- A lady who carried herself with poise and grace, her wisdom and wit were welcome addition to their numbers. She had travelled  for years as a greeter to the people. helping new members understand the gospel and guiding them into the light. Now she would do much, much more.15

This small band of writers, along with numerous greeters, travelled the world spreading the word and bringing enlightenment to lost souls. Encouraging expression in all forms. Handling problems with dignity and fairness. Their numbers grow and the gospel spreads across the land. Kevin can look upon his creation and say "All is well in the kingdom, remember to have fun". 16

So come, join us, be a part of this supportive community. Treat one another with respect, respect of beliefs and ideals, respect of expression and respect for yourself. 17

Peace be with you   Amen 18

well the whole series is a bit unsettling. Comparing yourself to jesus and the apostles? What a nice bit of egotism rationalised as "satire". It's pretentiousness, plain and simple.

Secondly, regardless of the inflammatory nature of racial slurs, if they are restricted, it is not freedom. simple definition. it's a silly lie to say that it's free.

    Rar!

This is a bloody good discussion, but a bit depressing. I feel like, if there were to be a big party with everyone here invited, some of us would be doing standard party things (sex in the bathroom, vomiting in someone else's shoes, rifling through drawers, stealing food from the kitchen) and others would be sitting in the living room sipping sherry, discussing 'fun within reason' and 'the limits of fun' and 'how far has fun gone before fun has gone wrong?' Know what I mean? I align myself with the puking in the shoes camp, incidentally.

Yes, it is quite clear by your "f word" free post that you are quite intelligent, and capable not only of judging intelligence in others, smoochiegirl, but also of formulating intelligence ratings based on certain word usage.

Incidentally, is there any relationship between intelligence and taking country song titles as a motto? If, so, please define and elaborate upon that relationship. Thank you.

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

I for one found this peice to be pretty awesome. Its take a lot of guts to write and post such a conversial piece. I am very thankful for you writing this piece. Maybe it'll open the eyes of those that are blind to how much the "f" word makes them sound stupid. And it does. To me all it is, is your showing how unintelligent you are cause your unable to find another word to use. This is one piece to be very proud of Uncle Terry. Keep your head up and don'tlet anyone bully you or try to make you compromise in what you believe.

I don't really want to suck up to much of OGBO's space by a debate which doesn't relate to his story, but the distinction between conceptualizations is not invalidated by the fact that both of them can encompass the same thing. Yes, that is a constraint on positive freedom... but my point was not that terrorists should be able to blow things up.

My point is that you can be unrestrained (absolute negative freedom) and not have what is meaningful to you (say, for example, that this site were taken down... no more mods) whereas you can have absolute positive freedom in the presence of constraints (say for example that saying "fuck" and using erotic imagery is not important to you).

I never said the application of reconceptualization would resolve people's moral dillema's toward actions in the middle east. Besides, "semantic" differences do actually matter; but the difference between the two conceptualizations is ontological.

I am sort of a blindered ninny, but apparently not that sort. I was familiar with the word fuck by age 7 and that was over 30 years ago. I don't believe the word fuck should be censored, and I didn't see the recent "offending" post but I am almost certain that I would have felt it did not deserve censoring.

I do think there are some things that are inappropriate, I am glad we have the mods to take care of such things (though I expect the actual occurence is rare), and I do think that community standards will require negotiating with the sort of ninny who create problems where none exist (this seems empirically true as I understand he was reported by someone who has to remain nameless or thi will be deleted).

By the same token, I do think the moderators occassionally overstep their bounds, I think certain ninnies get listened to more than other types of ninnies, and I am a little miffed that one mod decided to read my im's and misconstrue something I said while reporting it to one of their friends.

I am glad the policy changed. I am not condoning any particular act. I am merely suggesting that our membership in ap does not automatically confer the right to post expletives, and that it would be better to try and negotiate what we can do.

In this particular case, someone took a stand and actually managed to get the standard changed. I am thrilled with the result.

The other type of freedom which everyone ignores because they've been brainwashed is positive freedom. Freedom is not about the presence or absense of constraints, it is the ability to do what is meaningful to you.

Now suppose for a minute, that 'what's meaningful for me' is provoking others to see if they'll lose their cool? Is that still 'positive freedom'? If you ask me it's semantics. There's 'freedom' which lacks constraints, and there's the absence of it. We are all free to do just as we please, but very rarely are we ever outside a system of retribution ( in one form or another ).

eg: terrorists blow up a country while exercising their positive freedom to do what is 'meaningful' to them. Said country retaliates by blowing them to bits. Those left are then subject to the peace keeping missions of individuals sent in to 'help' them get back on their feet as a country who will no longer blow up others. There's nothing wrong with either action of course, because both are only exercising their positive freedom to do what is meaningful to them.

What kind of blindered ninny believes that any kid with an interest in reading poetry (which I presume means at least 13-14 yrs old plus) does not hear and/or read the word "fuck" hundreds of times a day?

If you don't want your teenager to be exposed to the word "fuck", you really have no choice in the matter. Kids want to know all the words, they want to know what they mean and how to use them...and they will one way or another and there is nothing you can do about it. Is this really so terrifying? Come on, people, there are REAL terrors and problems in this life; why fabricate problems where none exist?

sigh. I didn't find the story particularly funny, and regretted the absense of acknowledgement of forebearers, but this wasn't really written for me, anyway.

That has nothing to do with the whole expletives issue, of course. I'm old fashioned. I distinguish between rights and freedom. "Rights" were traditionally privileges which obtained from membership or citizenship within a community... traces all the way back to the greeks. The notion of "god given" "inalienable" rights was a rather radical new notion back in the 18th century, and as an agnostic, I have a hard time believing in such things. Rights only exist as they are fought for, extended, and inscribed in law or tradition.

Freedom of course is different. We'll ignore greek conceptualizations as they don't really bear to much on the question at hand, but there have been 2 competing definitions of freedom which seem to have strong lineage and advocacy. The first is the one which everyone here seems to be proclaiming (including mods), and is coterminous with liberty. Freedom as the absense of external constraint. Absolute freedom would be the absolute absense of rules and authority, and that is clearly not our situation. Absolute freedom for individuals would allow them to bash in the heads of others with clubs. Why deny it? The truth is very few people believe in absolute freedom for individuals, and I wish they would admit it. There are other values, some of which are very nice values, like protecting children from harm. If anyone ever finds absolute freedom (negative freedom as Berlin labels it) before death, call me and let me know. We don't have it here. Don't pretend we do. And who cares.

    More importantly...

The other type of freedom which everyone ignores because they've been brainwashed is positive freedom. Freedom is not about the presence or absense of constraints, it is the ability to do what is meaningful to you. Apparently, some people find it meaningful to say the word "fuck" a lot. Apparently the moderators do not wish to allow this, and as they have the power to stop it, they do. I'd prefer people stop talking about this as "freedom of speech" which seems to imply this is some sort of constitutional issue (it ain't). We can call it freedom of expression, and we can admit that some meaningful expressions are outside the purview of what is allowed (or possible) on this site. This is unfortunate. Seriously. If someone feels that saying "fuck" a lot is important, wouldn't it be better if they could? It does not impinge on others freedoms, it simply exposes them to what many would consider noxious stimuli (which sort of violates positive freedom, but not liberty).

On the other hand, I don't really think it is so bad to have rules about the publicly available areas of the site to protect community standards of what children should be expose to. Parental protection doesn't apply here. If I don't want my child exposed to curse words and he tells me he is going to read some poetry from a public site, I have no way of knowing whether the page belongs to a bible thumper (who I don't want to expose my own kids to quite frankly) or a foul mouthed sob. So we try to minimize it. By the way, I'm serious about the bible thumping thing... there are certain religious viewpoints very freely expressed around here that I personally find dnagerousm, deleterious, and offensive.

I'm OK with some moderate review of home pages for profanity. Sorry to all my friends, but I see it as a pretty small cost for participating on this site, particularly as we have an adult category which can be used. I find it almost tragic that some people have decided that this is too great an impingement... losing them has been a loss for the community.

But both sides are being a bit unreasonable. Moderaters... you are impinging on people's freedom. Curse word users: you are in violation of community standards on a public site, and there is no constitutional guarentee that private organizations will refrain from censoring the word "fuck". Sorry.

Can we lose the self-righteousness and try to figure out a solution? Can we come up with a policy that doesn't expose my kids to the notion that they have to absorb some jerks beliefs or be condemned to hell? OK, probably "no" to both. I thought I had a point when I started this shit.

    I feel like Rodney King.

    new policy... excellent.

Real freedom brings real responsibility. We must be held accountable for our actions agaist others, our own freedom cannot infringe upon anothers. All true free nations hold those responsible who batter anothers rights, that is how it goes. for everyone to be as free as they wish, would bring on the destruction of society. the rapists and murderers and pedophiles of the world would run rampant. nothing would be sacred. with nothing to hold them in check the hateful hearts of this planet would eat the meek for lunch, and go after their kids for dinner. end of discussion.

Freedom implies the condition of being free. Unrestrained. In a state of power that enables one to act, speak or think without externally imposed restraints, or the fear of reprimand from them. In short it implies 'exemption'. The type of freedom you speak of here, is the freedom to act accordingly within the restraints of the system one is part of. I can abide by that definition, but I won't call it 'freedom' as I would define it. There is a difference between a state of 'freedom' and one that uses either laws, or conditions to guarantee, evoke, promote or facilitate responsible behaviour.

    Chapter 2

And so the great happy family of Monks, jealous or otherwise, ploughed their deep wide furrow through the glorious fields of Poesy, rejoicing as they lolloped. And Lo! Came they upon a bunch of ne'er-do'wells, biting at their heels. Yea, slew they the unbelievers, and marched on their jolly way, reciting iambic pentameters as they danced.

They encountered many difficulties along the way: some formed various pagan Runes consisting of Four Characters: the first curved, the last angular and threatening, the whole four-letter monstrosity traditionally associated with Fornication and other Divers Sinnes. But they were cast aside, and the Brotherhood continued in its Monkly Way, promoting Open-mindedness, quite reasonably, by silencing people. As you do.

And danced they, and danced, Shostakovich Five ringing in their ears, trampling upon various poetasters and doggerelists in their quest for Truth, perhaps calling in to do guest slots at the Shrine that is called Blackpool, where they did share a stage with the Manning that is called Bernard, and called upon all those poets, jaunty or otherwise, to save them from the curse of projective verse, and swearing, and beards.

And thus it was. The unbelievers were Vanquished, and did swap e-mail addresses and slither thence to an Alternative Site, whereupon their decadent Poetry was allowed to wallow in its own Slime, and the Community of Monks, chanting Benedictions, were Accorded the Ultimate Hallmark of the Poetic Community, celebrating their Reasonableness in a High Street Near You. Buy Two, Get The Third Three, Saith the Lord.

(I love the idea that if one disagrees with someone they, ipso facto, stop respecting themselves. Kafka would be Proud.)

    Great

Well, I knew that Kevin was important, but to me he is kinda like OZ, you know overseeing everything, or maybe Santa Clause. Kevin definately knows if you have bben naughty or nice,at least on the site...
This was wonderful reading, and a great history lesson as well

ROCK ON!!! This has to be one of the coolest things I've ever read. It's a whole big Mod story. I love it. Makes me wonder, if I had a character, what would it be? Hey you, keep up the awesome work. This whole idea was wicked awesome.

    A good read.

Oh, I cannot wait for the new, or perhaps the "muse" testament! Great writing, for a story. I think it would make a better poem, or, well, maybe I'll reserve judgement till I see what your "Revelations' looks like...

LoL. THIS IS AWESOME!! I love the irony, though I don't believe it's intended. I dunno. Excellent write. Very captivating, and I found that once I started reading it I just had to finish. Very, VERY well done.

I love this! This is so wonderful, not to mention that it also provide a way for people to become more aware of those who are in charge and perhaps remind us all that there are REAL people behind those badges who live, breath, love and hurt just as much as the rest of this. This is truly awesome sweetie!

    Ogreatbaldone,
You never cease to amaze me! What wonderful praise you have given to "our makers". For without them, where would we be? You yourself, have grace, wit and charm.Yes, you are oh so charming. I do hope all that come here truly appreciate what it is they have. Other sites do not allow graphics, so in this we are lucky. Other sites the comments are so brutal they can nearly peel the skin off your bones. And then there are those that are placcid. Aren't we lucky? For without Kevin's foresight, his heart and soul and his gift for sharing, (and his computereze) we would not have come to know one another. Kevin has chosen people that possess the same qualities as himself. People that have the highest caliber not only in writing, but in the willingness to share of themselves and of their heart and the soul. I for one, am going to print this and frame it and hang it by my computer. So that I will always be reminded just how lucky and blessed I am to have a place like AP/OP to come to. Thank you Terry, for reminding us. And thank all of the greeter, teachers, moderators. I do appreciate the time and effort each and everyone of you give to this site.
    ~Michelle~
