My name is Mia Ping, and I am in the Shu army. I am a peasant soldier under the great officer Ma Chao. I was farming one day when a call for action came through our town and the man with the charter was in his armor and had his sword drawn. 1
“People of the He Ban region… I have come to enlist you into the army of his lordship Ma Chao.” Great… the crops were just coming in and I had to go to war. Darn it. It turned out that we had to leave our families at that minute, and we were given our ten minutes to say goodbye. I approached my wife, and she looked at me with tears in her eyes, our new born little girl in her arms. I knew I wouldn’t get to see this girl until after she had grown to at least five years old, if I got to see her. 2
My wife gently kissed me on the mouth, and I said goodbye, and I followed the recruiter and a hundred other people to the awaiting onslaught. The recruiter stopped us before a meadow filled with scarecrows, and there were other soldiers with horses and spears. The soldiers handed each of a spear and a green uniform. Evidently the Shu army was in short supply of soldiers and has enlisted the aid of peasants. I quickly dressed, and picked my shoddy spear. I was on a private in the army now, and nothing else. 3
“You will have no armor, because you are peasants, and because we are in short supply. You will have to stay alive by using your head, and by killing the enemy before he get you,” barked the commander, “file up into rows in front of each scarecrow.” We all began to file up, and we were quickly told that we were to attack the scarecrow. Row after row of people began to strike out, and hit the scarecrow. It came up to my turn, and I whacked it with all my might. The head fell off in one great swing. I walked off smiling to myself. 4
“Don’t get cocky private,” the recruiter said, “In a real battle you will have to fight a lot harder than that to take down a person. There’s a real neck in the way.” With my spirits crushed I went to a circle and found a couple of friends from my town. We talked for a little bit, while we waited for the rest of the company to finish the training. When the last of the soldiers hit the remains of the scarecrows, and finished them off, we were made to get up and run to reinforce a regime that was failing. We wound up in the region of He Bei.5
We arrived at the our first stronghold, and told the commander there that the reinforcements have arrived. He rushed off to tell the general that we arrived, and we awaited for orders defending the main stronghold. A few minutes later, a battle-worn Liu Bei wandered up to us. Sword in hand he told us that he wanted us to move up the left side of the area and take out the enemies there, so that we can get a good defensive position. The enemy was closing in. Our job was to push them, back so that the area between the headquarters, and the enemy was greater. 6
We began our march, and found our first company of friendly troops already fighting back the invaders. Ma Chao was at the front with us, and a sense of morale rose up in me at the thought of fighting next to such a great warrior. Ma Chao was already busy hacking away at some other peasant soldiers, and working on taking a stronghold when we arrived. 7
“Thank goodness you’re here. We’ve been fighting these guys for hours, and we have had some trouble pushing them back. We could use some help.”8
Our company scattered into the group of enemies in front of us. I held my spear up high, and I stabbed at a guy in front of me. We were fighting the Wei family like usual, form the color or their blue clothing. I caught my first man in the lower abdomen and sent him hurtling backward into a couple of other Wei soldiers behind him. They fell down with one dead body on top of him. The adrenaline was pumping in my veins as I returned to a normal stance, and was waiting for another wave of people to come in. But, that was it, there was no one left around to kill because by the time I recovered from the attack, our men were on the fallen soldier within two seconds, stabbing them. Ma Chao had finished off the remainder of the people and we took over the strong hold. Green flags were hung at the spot, and the blue ones were taken down, and a supply man placed some medicines on the pedestal. 9
“You men stay here and reinforce, the rest of you come with me,” Ma Chao said. With that we ran down the hill a little bit farther, and we came upon another stronghold. We split up to fight these men, and I saw a group of archers line up. I decided to take them out first as this would be an advantage. I broke through the enemies and got to the archers. My colonel yelled for me to come back, and to fight the foot soldiers. I ignored his orders and continued up to them. By the time I had approached they had already loosed a volley into the group of men. They hit many of there own but a few arrows, struck our men. They didn’t expect me to come after them though, and I caught the first one off guard in the ribs. He flew backwards, and I continued, arcing my spear around until I hit the second one in the side. He flew into his comrades, making them crash to the ground in a heap of arrows and bows. They picked themselves up and I made short work of the last three. 10
When I returned only four enemies were left standing, ready to fight my army. I hit one of the four in the back with my spear, and when I pulled it out of him the other three, had met similar deaths. We put flags on this stronghold too, and likewise, reinforced, and moved on. This time I was on the defense of this one. Ma Chao said I was a smart thinker, and a good fighter and that I should stay in case of an attack. This stronghold was very near the enemy headquarters, and we needed to keep it. 11
I sat on the pedestal, and watched as four sets of our foot soldiers, including me, were placed here, along with an archer unit. I sat back and waited for any action to come along, but we didn’t get any. Our men ran by into the headquarters, and I thought the battle was going well. Then I heard the clatter of horses. Our army is made up of mostly peasants, and foot soldiers, so we have no horses. 12
“Horses! An officer is coming this way prepare yourself!” I yelled. 13
I jumped up and picked my spear up. As I landed on the ground and our troop got ready, I saw them coming. It was Xiahou Dun. His Scimitar was raised, and he had about thirty men running with him. 14
“Someone run off and get reinforcements, from the next closest stronghold.” I said.15
“There is no other stronghold, they overtook it, and we haven’t established one up ahead,” said another soldier, “we are doomed.”16
As he finished Xiahou Dun closed in and I dropped down on one knee, and lifted my spear up and out from me. I felt pressure against me and then pressure eased, as the horse fell to the ground, with Xiahou Dun flailing his arms on top of it. I hadn’t realized that I had rolled out of the way either, because I was in a different place than from where I was kneeling. He rolled and stood up. Looking at his horse I saw his face turn red with anger, and embarrassment, and then he turned towards me. His men had finally caught up and our small troop of soldiers rallied. They ran towards the oncoming enemy. 17
Xiahou Dun ran towards me. Fear, washed over me. Let me explain something about this man. He is a warrior like no other. While on a battle, he lost his eye to and arrow, and then proceeded to eat his own eyeball to show his men that he was strong. I am going to die. 18
He came in on me and pure rage was in his eyes. I parried, and blocked to the best of my abilities, and I fell down, in a blocking maneuver, with our weapons locked. I won the deadlock and pushed him off of me, and I sprang to my feet. He was still a little off balance, so I took the offensive, and hit his sword out of his hands. I then hit him in the side of the face with the back part of my spear. When I did this my spear swung behind me, impaling another soldier. Xiahou Dun hit the ground, he then picked up his sword and got back up. He rushed at me again, at unleashed a furious Musou attack. I moved out of the way, and he went by not being able to control it. 19
I rushed up and started attacking him again with the spear. With my final hit he went flying, and got back up.20
“This was a mistake,” he said and then he ran off. I returned to the battle where half of our troops had fallen, and half of their troops had fallen also. I speared a man, and he flew into his comrades, taking out some of them. Then I jumped up in the air, and spun downward striking the ground. It broke the enemies defenses, and our side attacked. That finished off the troops that tried to flank us. 21
We held that stronghold for a while. Ma Chao ran back to us and told us that he needed half of us to help in the front, and that another stronghold was taken. I went up with him, and found the next stronghold. A fierce battle was going on. I struck out at the few men in front of me with an upward swing, and got all four of them, two in the stomach, one in the throat, and the last in the head. I swung again, and I found that a lot more force was needed to break this one. 22
When I realized that I was looking down the entire time, I found I had killed Xiahou Yuan. He fell to the ground, and I looked at him in disbelief. We were close to finishing this battle evidently because Cao Cao was in site. Ma Chao came up to me and congratulated me on killing the other esteemed cousin of Cao Cao. We pressed on, and we hit them hard, but it seemed like we weren’t going anywhere at all. Cao Cao had seen his cousin fall, and he drove his horse towards me at top speed. Then an announcement was made. 23
“I couldn’t just sit and watch,” said Xiahou Dun. 24
Ma Chao was near me at this time, and he jumped up and hit Cao Cao off of his horse. Xiahou Dun came into the battled with his men also. We ad many men, but so did they. Liu Bei was in the battle, remarkably, he was also fighting, instead of sitting back trying to live. I was more awe struck than anything, to see such men in battle was a thing that many people would never see. 25
Xiahou Dun was mad. He called a duel against me, which I declined, and I ran towards the middle of the mass of people. I struck three enemies down, and kept going. When I couldn’t go any farther, a messenger ran up to the front. 26
“Sir Ma Chao, enemy forces are approaching the main camp.”27
“Oh no… Everyone! Turn around and head back to the main camp!”28
We turned our company around and bolted back to the main camp. When we finally returned a fierce battle had already been engaged, and Liu Bei was fighting his hardest.29
“Thank you for coming. We really need some help.”30
An arrow flew by his head, and he ducked, as did Ma Chao who almost caught it himself. I threw myself into the battle, as did my companions, and we fought hard. They were a tough group, led by Xiahou Dun himself. I didn’t want him to see me, but in a crowd of people that all look alike I’m sure he didn’t recognize me. I ducked, and dodged, weaved, and bobbed. I struck out, and found a target, and was suddenly struck myself. 31
I felt the punch go straight into my gut, and I doubled over. The wind had left my lungs, and I was gasping for air. I looked up to find an enemy soldier looking down upon on me, with glee in his eyes. Then, something struck him in the back and I saw a sword rise from his chest. I was overwhelmed with happiness, but in his dying move, he struck me with the butt of his spear. I lost consciousness, and hit the ground with a thud.32
When I woke up, I saw that two men were carrying me on a stretcher. I sat up and one of them told me to lie back down. I got up and went to see the recruiter, but couldn’t find him anywhere.33
“General Liu Bei requests your company at the front,” a man said as he walked up to me. 34
“Ok I will go to see him.” 35
“You are Mia Ping right?”36
“Yes I am.”37
“Then go up to the front.”38
“Right.”39
I hadn’t noticed until now that we were on the move, and that the tents had been packed up, and the horses were moving, and that no one was fighting. A battle worn brother of Liu Bei, Guan Yu, rode past on his horse red hare. His long beard flowed down to his waist. He looked at me, and then rode on. I ran and ran, still feeling a little dizzy, until I ran into the rear end of a horse. I fell down, and looked up. It twitched its tail, and I jumped out of the way just in time for it to do its horsely business on the ground. 40
The man on the horse stopped, and looked back at me. He had an odd shaped mustache and a green hat on. A sword at his side, I realized that this was Liu Bei. His horse almost crapped on me! 41
“You wished to see me my lord?” I stammered.42
“You are Mia Ping? All you privates look the same. I can only tell who the officers are now a days. Walk with me I have something to tell you.”43
We continued on for some time in the same direction before he spoke with me.44
“I saw you take out a great commander today. I am proud of that. Xiahou Yuan is not an easy person to defeat. For this, I am promoting you to a commander. You will have a troop of five that you will lead into battle. You will get a sword, and some leather armor with your standard uniform. Good job.”45
“Thank you sir, I will be sure not to fail our army!”46
I was astounded. Me? Get promoted for accidentally killing a high ranking officer? This is great! Our army continued to move onward until we finally decided to make camp for the night. I set up my tent and went to go see the supply captain. I told him about the promotion, and got my sword, and armor, and then met my troops under my command. 47
I met them all, and we talked for a while before turning in for bed. The next day I met up with my men, and we headed out to our post before the battle. We sat there for a little bit in our position, before Cao Cao’s army finally came into the clearing. 48
“Me I have an idea. Get over here, and hide, let them think that they can take this stronghold.”49
Our little patrol group moved and hid in the forest. I motioned for the archers to stay on standby, and get ready for an ambush. Cao Cao’s troop rolled into the our stronghold, and looked around. I gave the archers the order to fire, and they did, dropping five guys. My patrol ran out and I had my sword drawn. I struck down a man and kept swinging knowing that spears, and pikes couldn’t get to me up close. I struck another man in the belly, and sent him flying into a group of other people. They lay sprawled out on the ground, and my men finished them up. That group was finished for, and we didn’t even lose one person in the ambush. 50
We received reinforcements, and were told to move in on the enemies, and take back what was ours. We had lost the battle yesterday, but today we would make up for it. We ran up and began fighting with the enemy. I charged up and did a Musou attack the oncoming enemies. I hit all five of them in my frenzy of attacks, and took all of them out. The enemy base was in site, and since our previous ambush we had no one on this side to oppose us. I sent one man to go get reinforcements, for an attack on the enemy headquarters. 51
They messenger ran off in the other direction, and we moved in. The gate was open, and we marched in keeping close to the wall, and found our first enemy stronghold. I ordered my men to circle around it, and then when we made a complete circle we would close in and take them out from all sides. We spread out and began the closing in. It was a foggy day, and the fog was thick especially inside of this fort. We successfully took the stronghold, with only on casualty. 52
We finally received our reinforcements, and then moved into the fort more. We had Ma Chao, and Lu Bei with us. We spread out, and found the rest of the enemies, and then the violent battle ensued. This was were Cao Cao was, and he had to be stopped. We hacked our way through enemies, and on more than one occasion I saved Liu Bei’s life. Men were sneaking up on him and I killed them, or vice versa. 53
Then the sound of hooves caught our ears, and Xiahou Dun rode up to us, thousands of men following him. A thought of hopelessness hung onto me as I continued to hack and slash my way through men. My patrol was gone, I could feel it, but my commanders were here and that raised a bar of morale in my mind. I jumped up in the air, and drove my sword right into Xiahou Dun’s chest, driving him to the ground. I left him there with my sword in him, his bandanna over his only eye, fluttered in the wind.54
I picked up an enemy sword, and started to move in. I had noticed that many of Dun’s men had run away, after I had delivered the finishing blow, and I was happy. We continued on, until we finally found the inner sanctum of Cao Cao. He was sitting on his horse with his men all around. A small stronghold was in the corner waving the blue flags of his army. I wanted to be the person to fly our colors from that stronghold. As we rushed in I pinpointed out the archers, and struck them first, disassembling there squad at once. Cao Cao had already been knocked off of his horse, and he was on the ground fighting Liu Bei. 55
I snuck back in behind, me and he spun hitting me in the face with the flat of his blade, sending me flying. He ran up to me and stood over me, raising his sword up in the air. As he brought it down I rolled out of the way, and he dug it into the ground, too far, and wasn’t able to bring it out. I stood up and stabbed him in the side, sending him flying through the air and up against a hill. He started to die, and our men swarmed on him like ants. When it was over and he was dead, I hung up our colors, on the last stronghold, and cheered along with our men. China was finally at peace, and I was able to return home with some more dignity. 56
