The sun was beginning to set over the trees over the streets of Winnipeg. Kayla, a thirteen year old girl, began to hurry home as she saw this. Her father always had a rule of her being home before sunset. She jogged down the sidewalk of Day Street, trying to get home before the sun settled over the buildings. Kayla’s curly brown hair was covered by her sweater’s hood. She basically wore it up because she felt like it.1
After about 10 minutes of jogging, Kayla finally made it home. Not being the most active kid, Kayla was huffing and puffing by time she had gotten home. When she came home, her father was waiting for her.2
“Where have you been?” he questioned her, his eyes narrowed as he demanded an answer.3
“I was only late Dad. I’m sorry.” Kayla replied.4
“Well, try to make it home faster okay?” her father got up from sitting on the couch, and left to go downstairs. Kayla sighed in relief. She thought she’d be in much deeper trouble. She walked down the hallway, and turned right quickly to reach her room. Like normal, Kayla’s room was a mess. Her collection of ducks was on the ground – obviously touched by her brother while she was away. Kayla slightly growled at that discovery. She hated it when Geordie, her four year-old brother touched her things. Being more specific, her ducks.5
Kayla turned on her computer, pressing a circular button on the machine. The blue start screen had the word WELCOME in white letters. She clicked on her ‘name’, as her brother called it, with an image of a little dinosaur on the side. When her desktop opened, with a picture of a pretty fox on it, Kayla clicked on her desktop icon for iTunes. Her iTunes library popped up. Most of it was metal, rock, alternative, or ‘emo’, except for some pop music here and there. Kayla clicked on one of her favourite songs in the library. Suddenly, ‘Early Sunsets of Monroeville’ by My Chemical Romance came on through her computer speakers. Kayla closed her eyes for a short moment – what she liked to do while she listened to this song. She then opened them, and soon opened an internet window. She began to role-play, until she heard her mother call her.6
“Kayla!”7
“What?”8
“We’re going to see Nana and Papa!” Kayla jumped excitedly. She always enjoyed visiting her grandparent’s, her dad’s parents. 9
“Okay, hang on!” she called back at her mother. Kayla had decided that she shouldn’t wear her sweater to her Nana’s house – it was all dirty. So, she took off her sweater, and soon decided to change her shirt as well. Don’t worry – she always wore a camisole under her clothes, which is basically like a spaghetti strap shirt. She looked in one of her dresser drawers, full of shirts. Most of them she wouldn’t dare wear to school, so she wore them at home or when her family would go to a relative’s house. Those shirts included a light green shirt with a crossing that would go over her chest that had a white trip along the neckline and bottom. Another of those shirts was a gray v-neck long sleeved shirt with a band that would go under her chest, with free fabric hanging, as well as a polka-dot pattern. Kayla decided to wear the gray polka-dotted one. Seeing as the v-neck was so low, she also put on a white tank-top to go under it. Her mother called again. Kayla could tell by her tone that she was getting impatient. She began to pick up the pace, keeping on her dark blue jeans that she had gotten about two or three months ago. She hopped into the family car – a Honda Civic hybrid, and then the family drove off.10
Thankfully, the ride to Nana and Papa’s house is only about five minutes. Kayla opened the car’s door, and ran towards the house, not waiting for her family. She never waited for her family once she got out of the car at Nana’s. She’d just go straight up to the door. Nana was already at the door, her arms out wide to receive a hug from Kayla. Even though Kayla was a slight rebel, liking her punk-rock music, she and her Nana were quite close, and seemed to have a lot in common. Both had green-thumbs, loved to eat fish fillets, and both enjoyed learning about Iceland. The two could talk, what seemed for hours on end. The two giggled, and then they moved to go inside the house when the rest of her family came to the doorstep after Kayla. Their house was basically the same design as Kayla’s house, except for their kitchen – that’s where they always sat to talk and maybe have a cookie or two. They – Dad, Mom, Stephanie, Geordie, Kayla, Papa, and Nana - all sat at the kitchen table. Nana always had a candle lit in the center of the table, but today there was no candle. Probably because Geordie was here, so Nana didn’t want him to get burned. They family talked while Geordie played with some toy cars that Nana always kept in a Lego box at the back of the living room. Nana soon got up, and moved towards a Tupperware container she had full of her home-made sugar cookies. She knew that Kayla and her father (he’ll be known as Dad in this story as well) loved sugar cookies – a lot. Nana began to move them to the plate. She placed each cookie on the late individually, placing them in circles – she liked to have the cookies in a certain design-order, I guess you could describe it. Kayla watched the cookies as her Nana placed them gently in the center of the gray table. Her family talked a bit, then it was time to go. After all, it was getting quite late for Geordie – he had to go to bed around 9 PM.
