"Ugh. So not hungry." I groaned, pushing away the plate of waffles my mom put in front of me.1
"All the more for me then." Gabby cheered, her gaze locked on the mountain that was waffles, butter, and syrup.2
My stomach did an involuntary flip, causing me to groan again. My mother sauntered over to my side and felt my forehead.3
"Honey, your burning up. My lord." She brushed back the locks of hair around my face with worried eyes. "I think you should go lay in bed for the time being."4
I swatted away her hand, sniffing up my slightly stuffed nose and shook my pounding head. "I'm fine."5
She seemed to concentrate for a moment then shook her own, making me stand up. "No. Your to sick to go out today. Go on."6
I looked at Gabby with begging eyes, hoping she would help me out. But of course she paid me no attention, to engrossed in her newly accommodated food and humming some nameless tune to notice.7
I sighed. "Gabby, tell my mom I'm not sick. Tell her I'm fine."8
"Shouldn't have went out in the rain yesterday."9
If looks could kill...10
"You were out in the rain yesterday?" my mother asked, shocked. "I thought I told you to-"11
Her gaze suddenly flicked to the open back door of the kitchen. She looked as though she were listening intently. My brows pulled together with confusion as she looked back to me. "Just be sure to tell me next time."12
I shook my head once more. "You never treated Tim this way." I groaned. My older brother Tim was off to college for a while, studying psychology. May the fires of hell burn me down before he comes home and starts to analyze everybody again. Summer break was brutal for the whole family. Personally I think he was dropped on his head as a baby and is stupid as can be. He walks around with a notepad and glasses on interrogating me on if I think I had a good childhood or not. Ugh, like I said, kill me now. Fall break was approaching.13
"Your brother was never dumb enough to hang around outside when it was raining either." she stated simply. "Now stop whining."14
I gasped slightly. "I am not whining. Gabby, am I whining?"15
She looked up at me in mid-bite. "Um, no comment?" Then she took her bite and my hand rested on my hip as I glowered at her.16
"You are of no use to me. I love you no longer."17
Gabby dropped her fork and stood up. "Take that back you, you...butter burner!"18
I looked at her with wide eyes, appalled. "Well at least I'm not a lint licker!"19
"That was one time! One time lady, and you throw it in my face like you just know everything!"20
"I do." I stated confidently.21
"Oh yeah?! Well which two of the Teletubies were supposedly having a secret relationship?!"22
"Tinky Winky and Dipsy."23
"Wrong!" she yelled with a smirk, pointing her finger at me. "It was the purple and green one! So ha! In your face!"24
I just starred at her, narrowing my eyes and pursing my lips.25
"Oh wait..."26
I smiled and walked forward to hug her. "Okay, okay. I still love you."27
"More than apples and ba-nay-nay's?" she mumbled with a sniff.28
I laughed. "More than all the apples and ba-nay-nay's in the world."29
"Mmkay." She pushed me away and sat back down. "I'm not done eating."30
I patted the top of her head with a smile then looked back at my mom. She was starring at the back door again.31
"Why do you keep doing that? What's back there?" I asked and she whipped her head around to face me.32
"Bird." she said with a wave of her hand.33
Okay...34
"Now up to bed." She shooed me away with her hands and I groaned.35
"Mom-"36
"Now. Gabby's Dad probably wants her home anyway."37
Gabby stood up with a stretch before her now empty plate. "Yeah, I suppose." she yawned.38
"I'll call you later." I promised on my way up the stairs.39
My mother insisted the windows and curtains stay open so the sun could filter every dark shadow in my room. I told her she was crazy because of the wind that made my papers on my desk fly all around the ceiling. I was cold and she wouldn't listen.40
So there I lay, wrapped in a total of five blankets, shivering from the light breeze that ruffled my hair. Damn the person who thought to put four windows in this room. My nose is defiant going to fall off soon. I was not that sick for Pete's sake. Just some little sniffles. Mom was never like this until now.41
Maybe she's a robot. Yeah, and someone is controlling her from the attic with a little remote. And not just any old ordinary someone an alien someone. I always knew they'd come for me. Sooner or later I just knew they were going to come and take me to their ship. They'll tie me to a cold metal table, naked. And you'll think its harmless just because its a shiny object, but no my friend. Do not be fooled. They'll stick me with needles and poke my flabby flesh with unidentified objects. Which kind of reminds me of the Pillsbury Doughboy and his evil quirks. Always making that cute little noise and being all smiley and such. But oh he will deceive you. He's really devilish little fiend, that doughboy. He jacked my nickel and ran away like one of those weeble wobbles, never to be seen again.42
But his belly is nothing compared to that of jolly of Saint Nichol-43
Suddenly the blinds clapped against my left window, making me jump. And this happened just as the sun went behind clouds, replacing the yellow in my room with pale gray.44
Ugh! Why do all the weird thing's always happen when the sun goes away?!45
I sighed and loosened the blankets around me so I was able to at least to wiggle my fingers. And for some reason I had the strongest urge to climb out my right window. What the hell is wrong with me? I don't even like heights!46
But the urge was suddenly so strong I found myself straddling the window sill before I even knew what I was doing.47
I huffed at myself in frustration. My mind was saying no, but my body wouldn't budge. So there I sat, like a complete retard, hanging halfway out my window, having a mental battle with myself. And like the complete freak I am, I was loosing against my own self. At one point I believe I was growling, threatening my own legs that I would cut them off if they did not listen to me this instant.48
"Watcha doin' up there?" said a familiar voice, the roughness of a man but the playfulness of a child.49
Caleb50
"Oh you know, just hangin'." I gave a nervous laugh as I looked down at the sidewalk to see a tall muscular frame of my good 'ol buddy Caleb. I always thought he took steroids to be that big, but upon seeing the rest of the men in his family, I suggested otherwise. The boy was just big.51
To make matters worse he busted out in a booming laugh fit, nearly dropping the bag of family sized Doritos he was eating. Thinks I look funny does he? Well I'll show him.52
His laughter stopped when my pine cone came in contact with his fat head. "Did you just throw a pine cone at me?" he asked, his face in complete shock.53
"Yes, you big jerk. Now get up here and help me down." I was shaking with fear by now. I had somehow managed to get myself completely out onto the flat part of the roof in front of my window.54
Heights are so not my cup of tea.55
Caleb threw his bag of chips aside on the grass and started up after me, laughing the whole way. He didn't have a problem climbing up the side of my two story house.56
"I hate you." I stated dryly as he snickered, reaching for my hand.57
"I can deal with that." he said with a toothy smile. Stupid big blue-eyed freak with his stupid buzz cut brown hair and pretty tan skin...did I mention I hate him?58
He started to help me back in through the window, which was exactly where I wanted to go, but my body refused to do what I nicely asked it to.59
"Um, I think I gotta go down." I mumbled, looking down at the ground, which seemed so far away. My knuckles turned white clutching onto his hand.60
"Why?"61
"I just got to."62
He shrugged his huge shoulders and gently picked me up, bridal style.63
"Caleb Ryan Judson! You put me down!" I yelled, squeezing my eyes shut and holding on to him for dear life as he stood his full height of 6'7 on the tiny space of roof.64
"I am." he chuckled.65
I peeked open one eyed to see him standing on the edge, shuffling his feet.66
"You are not going to jump!"67
But did he listen? No. Does anybody ever listen to me? No. So what's he do? He jumps. The big oaf jumps off a friggin' two story house! And what else does he do you ask? He laughs! I almost just died and he laughs like the big over-sized jerk that he is.68
I kicked and punched in his arms before he put me down on my feet. I was so dizzy and almost fell but he steadied me around the waist then let go again. When I had my smarts back I pointed my own personal lightning bolt at him.69
"Don't ever do that again!" I yelled and his barking laugh came once again. Picture a big grizzly bear laughing, yeah that's Caleb.70
I huffed and my body turned me around and led me to the huge oak on the side of my house. It was like I had no control of it. The aliens device was finally taking effect...71
"Um, Caleb..." I said, unsure how to tell him my body was leading me some where.72
"Hey, Anna, I'm sorry. Hey, where you going?" he called after me and in three of his large strides he was next to me.73
"I don't know. I just...gotta go over here." I said, keeping my eyes straight.74
"Anna, your mom called me over and said you were sick. I was coming to visit you so what the hell where you doing climbing out your window in the first place? And what is so important over here?" he demanded. Ha, demanded. Like I have to tell him everything. So what do I do? Naturally...I tell him everything.75
"I don't know, Caleb. There's just something here and I gotta see. I don't know what's over there, hence why we're walking over to said place to figure out what it is." I stated, like I actually knew what I was talking about. Psh, yeah, and one day Gabby will learn the whole alphabet. Two things that will never happen.76
Caleb suddenly stopped dead in his tracks, grabbing my wrist firmly. He tilted his nose to the wind and gave a good couple of sniffs. What the hell did he think he was? Then he puffed out his large chest and nudged me behind him, taking a defensive posture in front of me.77
"Caleb-"78
"Show yourself." he demanded to the huge tree.79
I snorted with laughter. That is until said tree actually showed itself. Behind it was a boy. A beautiful boy. A beautiful boy with a dazzling smile and perfectly imperfect golden hair. His beauty clouded my senses and all I could do was stare. He was so...pretty. And he was smiling like an angel...at me.80
I tried to step around Caleb to get to him, but Caleb pushed me back, forcing my face to twist with pain. I wanted to be near this beautiful creature. I wanted to touch him. And it almost hurt to look away. He winked his long eyelashes at me, his smile growing wider. His eyes. Oh his eyes were the oddest color of green. Like neon lights. So...luring...81
"Your not welcome here." Caleb spat, almost baring his teeth like a dog. "Leave."82
The boys neon orbs never left my face. "Did you not hear her calling to me? I've been waiting for days and she smells simply delicious." The boys eyes closed and he raised his chin and inhaled the air. "Delicious." he repeated in a murmur.83
Caleb took at step forward and the angel's eyes snapped open to him, excitement plastered on his face.84
"Watch your place, pup. This is between me and Miss Annabelle." The angel smiled back at me and my knees shook, threatening to buckle underneath me. "She's been singing out to me for a while now. Isn't that right, luv? Teasing me like you do." He made disapproving clicks with his tongue. "Thank heavens he left you for now. I didn't think I could wait much longer."85
Caleb made a sound in his chest that didn't even sound human. A growl. Low and harsh. Like a lion's roar. It made me jump and yelp, throwing me out of my trance.86
"Caleb?" I asked in a small voice.87
"Go back to the house Anna." he ordered, straining his voice to keep it calm.88
"Anna?" The beautiful spoke into my ear, suddenly behind me in a blink. I jumped again, but I felt a cold brush away the hair on my neck and I froze. "Would you like to come with me now?" His lips brushed against the hollow of my neck and I shivered. It was then I noticed the accent that dripped from his voice. It was like wind chimes and music to my ears.89
I nodded my head because it was all I could manage. Then I saw Caleb lash out at him with a closed fist but hit the air when the angel appeared in front of me once again, a smile playing on his lips. He took my hand and with a polite bow, kissed it gently.90
"My name is Nolan." He said proudly, before turning my hand over to show my palm. His lips hovered above my wrist, but his eyes looked back up at me, darker now. A deep emerald, almost growing darker as I starred, shocked. "May I?" he asked, politely.91
I wasn't sure what he was asking permission for, but whatever it was he already had my blessing before he even asked. So I nodded once more, but Caleb finally got a grip around Nolan's neck and I yelled out in pain for him.92
Caleb threw him back against the huge oak with a boulder crashing sound and the whole tree shook, a leaf falling before me. It didn't seem to faze Nolan as he shot his head up to the sky, examining the clouds. The sun was beginning to peak out from behind the clouds once more.93
Caleb laughed. "Gavin's gonna kick your ass all the way back to England, pretty boy."94
But Nolan smiled as the sun shined on him directly and he suddenly went up in ash and smoke, his laughter still in the air. I gasped and reached for him and only to feel the air.95
Caleb looked at me with a smirk. "Let the games begin."
