For A Dollar(The Song)

Missing image

 1

Look what you do for a dollar2

Driven like a leaf in the rain3

You're not your own you're a coward4

You can't break away from the chain5

 6

Working every day for another man's money7

Ain't it tragic that there's not another way8

Doing everyday things you don't want to do9

And all you get's another day's pay10

 11

Look what you do for a dollar12

Driven like a leaf in the rain13

You're not your own you're a coward14

You can't break away from the chain15

 16

I wish I'd been a man born of wealth17

With all the freedom, power, and privilege that it brings18

Destined by my fate to be known and respected19

A man of independent means20

 21

Look what you do for a dollar22

Driven like a leaf in the rain23

You're not your own you're a coward24

You can't break away from the chain25

 26

"Money is the god of this world," said Paul27

There's nothing in this world that it won't buy28

Bow down and worship with your hearts and your minds29

Don't doubt, don't ever question why30

 31

Look what you do for a dollar32

Driven like a leaf in the rain33

You're not your own you're a coward34

You can't break away from the chain35

 36

I don't want to live for the buck anymore37

I want to choose my own direction and be free38

Follow my heart where my dreams lie within39

And money has no rule over me40

 41

Look what you do for a dollar42

Driven like a leaf in the rain43

You're not your own you're a coward44

You can't break away from the chain45

This song has a lot of meaning to me, first because I wrote and performed it.  Next because I am an artist and a dreamer.  I dream of success, which I hope even yet, one day to achieve.  I hope that this song will have a lot of meaning to you.48

  • I get this. I can't listen to it though becasue my computer refuses to run the program but I get it. It makes alot of sence overall. I watch my parents work and work just to stay out of debt and then have it fail. I wonder who gets all the money at the top then gives it to use so sparingly? A good song and I wish I could hear it. Flowed really well and had a lot of meaning.

Vague, Undefined, Romance...not Reality is it!?

I can see (hear) this as a song...but I disagree with its implied meaning. Nothing wrong with working for "the dollar"...how else are we to get it? It doesn't just "blow your way in the wind" like your leaf!
The overall implication of the lyric disparages work...I can't agree with the narrating voice of this. What's wrong with what the central character does for money? This is never defined nor stated. And it is this vagueness I find somewhat disturbing. How does he "live for the buck?" And why can't he still be "free," "choose" his own direction, "follow" his heart and dreams? It would seem to me if the central character to whom these lyrics are addressed were to follow THEM...he would simply be a vagrant...a hobo...a bum!
So, it seems to follow some kind of "folk song" romantic aphoristic, silliness of undefined character. It's not exactly realistic.

Must have caught you in a good mood!!

A large number of Americans, not vagrants, work all their lives and have nothing much more to show for it than debt. Middle and Lower socioeconomic classes struggle to get ahead and many never make it. This does not say all. It is a good work ethic to take pride in what you do, but the frustration of poor wages takes its toll. I speak as one who has struggled much of his life and got no where for it. The song stems from personal experience which you apparently have not shared.

However, because of disability, I retired at 47 and because my mother left me a house, I have a home. I barely make ends meet, but for five years I have been able to do it entirely on my own.

I started working when I was eleven. Anyway, that's what helped lead to the song. Were you able to hear it?

Since when do you measure music by the strict yardstick of reality? The challenge of this song is to overcome the chains that bind you to the dollar.

Well, I thought you might like this one.
