Don't Answer The Door - Ch. 8

Matt frantically tried to open the gate to his cell in the prison. It wasn't turning! To Matt's horror, he began to hear loud footsteps coming closer to him. He looked up, and back down to the key entering the little slot. It wouldn't open!! He was terrified of what he will see, when he sees the murderer turning the corner, and staring at him. 2

"Damn you Cage!" Matt screamed loud. 3

He knew it was Cage, the serial killer who killed more than 300 people. How could this be happening to him? He knew it was God paying him back for everything he has done to his family. Matt finally got the gate to slide open. He stepped out, feeling free, but still enslaved in a mess he couldn't get out of. He stared at Carter once more. Deep down he knew that he wasn't suppose to be in prison. Matt never got an honest answer from Officer Carter. 4

"God Bless You" Matt whispered out to Cage. 5

Matt has never said those words in the longest time, he felt he had to though. He was so sorry for what happened to Carter, although it wasn't technically his fault, he felt it was. The footsteps were coming closer, closer, louder. Matt turned and ran out of the building, running for Carters car. 6

He reached the patrol car, and he had his hand on the handle ready to open the door. 7

"Shit!" Matt screamed into the night sky.8

The door was locked, and he needed the keys to get inside and get away. He had to go back in there, with Carters dead body hanging from the ceiling, and with his murderer, Cage. After a while of pondering whether or not he should, he finally grew the guts to go inside. He ran into the building, a chill running down his spine once again, just the way it did the first time he entered in there. He went to where he was locked for hours, but when he looked there, his mouth gaped open as he looked at what he saw.9

Nothing, that is what he saw. It troubled him, because he didn't know where the body of Carter went. He looked at his cell, and all his puke was gone. All of the blood that was pouring out of Carter was gone as well. There was no noose hanging from the ceiling, there was no blood, not guts spilling on the floor. 10

"What the hell?" Matt whispered slowly, to himself. 11

He listened closely, but he didn't hear footsteps. He was all alone in there. Matt began to walk backwards slowly, afraid to turn his back from where he once was locked. Matt then turned around in a hurry and ran out of the building once again. While he ran out, he had decided to break the window of the patrol car to get in. 12

That plan wouldn't work, he realized. The car was no longer outside. Where had it gone?! He was just out here with it, who took it? Had it been Cage? What was going on? Matt didn't have one single answer to any of these questions. He was stranded in the dark, with no way out. He decided to start running, almost tripping in the sand. He kept on running until he found a single house. It was small, and looked to be in shackles. 13

He didn't know whether or not he should enter the house. He didn't know whether or not anyone was living in the house. 14

"Wait a second." Matt said to himself. "What was that?" He asked himself.15

He saw two shadows moving around inside, in one of the rooms upstairs. They were against each other, he decided to not disturb the two. He slumped his head as he began his walk once again. He walked until he realized something. That black car, that was Alex's car! Matt ran back to the house and started knocking on the door. His big fists were pounding hard on the wooden door, which obviously has never been sanded or painted. 16

Matt pounded until he heard some footsteps coming quickly down the stairs. The door opened quickly, and Matt saw Alex, although Alex seemed to think it was someone else who would be at the door.17

"You should be taking care of... oh." Alex caught himself, as he recognized Matt. "What are you doing here? How'd you find us?"18

"Us? That means Eva is with you. Can I come in please?" Matt said, looking down. 19

Alex stared at Matt for a while, and then decided to open the door wider. It was a sign, as if to say, 'okay, come in.'  Matt entered the house, and was surprised at the beauty of it. He looked around, not realizing that Alex was staring at him. 20

Alex coughed, and that got Matt's attention. Matt looked at Alex, and they stared, uncomfortably at each other for a few seconds. 21

"So, are you going to tell me what you're doing here?" Alex said, as he stared at Matt with cold eyes. 22

"I.. It's a long story." Matt said, as he gave permission to himself to sit down in a chair. 23

Matt decided he better tell Alex what's going on. "I, well I was arrested." 24

Alex laughed really loud. He placed his hands on his knees as he bent over, still snickering at what Matt just said. Matt looked at Alex. He got angry because being in jail is nothing funny. Going through what happened to him tonight, it wasn't even close to being funny.25

"Why the hell are you laughing you little weasel?!" Matt screamed at Alex. 26

"You didn't get arrested you fool. I know some people who work for the police department. I took it in my liberty to pull some strings, and get you in there to spend the night. That should teach you a lesson." Alex said, still laughing.27

Suddenly, Alex stopped laughing and stared at Matt, "Don't EVER touch Eva again." 28

Matt stood up, staring at Alex. "This was all a joke?!" He screamed, "Do you know what the fuck happened to me tonight?! Do you even know what happened to your friend Carter?!" 29

Alex shook his head, curious to what happened.30

"Do you remember your friend Josh? Do you remember what happened to him? I think it was Cage, the serial killer who just escaped from..."31

"I know who Cage is." Alex cut off Matt.32

"Well, when I was in jail, well... Cage got a hold of Carter. He killed him in cold blood, right in front of me. I never even got the chance to take a look at Cage. I've got no proof to say it's him, but I'm almost positive it is."33

"How do you know?" Alex said, his eyes filling with tears, that he quickly batted away.34

"All of his internal organs were missing, when he hung him from a noose."35

Alex didn't want to hear anymore. He turned his back on Matt, and climbed the stairs to the bedroom he was in, with Eva. Eva saw him upset, and she wrapped her arms around him.36

"What's wrong?" Eva asked him, worried. 37

"Eva! Oh, Eva, I have so much to say to you!" Matt yelled up to Eva when he heard her voice. 38

"Get out of my house!" Alex screamed at Matt. He didn't want to see him, not after the news he just told him. 39

"What? Why? But Cage is after me, he's going to want to kill me too!" Matt screamed in fear. 40

Alex didn't care. He looked at Eva, and with his eyes, he begged her forgiveness for kicking her father out. Alex went down the stairs slowly, and opened the door, waiting. He stood there for minutes, not saying a word to Matt, he just waited till he left. 41

Matt exited the house, and stood on the front porch. He looked out at the dark sky, at the dark world. He didn't know what was out there, where or when he will find it, but he knew for sure one thing was out there. Cage, and Cage wouldn't want Matt to live, he was sure of it. He walked in the dark, just waiting for him to jump out of the darkness and steal his life.42
