The day my life broke apart, Mary and I were just finishing up our chores. Mrs. Hammon, our employer, was looking after her ill father and her husband probably found a bar to enjoy himself in. We were left alone to take care of Michael when he came home. However, when he arrived with a blood-stained shirt and a bewildered look on his face, I knew this wouldn’t be a normal day.1

“Oh my God, what happened?!” Mary exclaimed. She went over to his aid. “Did you get in a fight?”2

“Sort of.” Michael wiped his nose with his bloodied arm. “I didn’t mean for it to… end this way.”3

“What do you mean?” I asked.4

“My former girlfriend…” He began and I immediately knew what happened. Michael was having problems with his girlfriend cheating. I told him to take care of it.5

'They had promised us that it would stop.' Michael murmured. Realizing he mixed up his words, he tried again. “Actually, she was the one who promised me. She told me that she’d never go after him again. But that bitch did. She kept stabbing me in the back. But I did what you said, Molly. I took care of it.”6

“She stabbed you, you stabbed her.” I said, my voice dripping with disgust. “Congratulations. You’re a killer.”7

Michael just laughed. “Well, the world is full of bitches. You might as well pluck them out one by one.”8

Mary shook her head. “I don’t get it. What’s that supposed to mean?”9

“You’d never get it, Mary.” He laughed bitterly. “But Molly, I thought you’d be laughing after you heard that.”10

“Oh, I got it.” I replied. I began to head towards to the front door. Mary followed me seconds later. “It’s just not as funny as you think.”11

Author notes

Not a happy story, pretty dark. 300 words, it's flash fiction. I would draw it out further if it was a longer piece. Yet it isn't.
