I stopped the thought in its tracks. That didn't matter. This was my baby, my Renesmee.2
She placed her hand onto my cheek, though I already knew what she was thinking. She wanted her mother.3
"You'll be able to see her soon," I promised. As long as Bella's self control was enough that she could stand being near Renesmee, that was true. Though Renesmee didn't smell quite like a human, and didn't smell a thing like food to me, Bella would be a newborn and therefore more vulnerable to her impulses.4
Renesmee touched my cheek again. She wanted to see Momma now.5
I had an idea. "Momma's sleeping," I told her, "but we could go and see her for just a little while." Bella would be under for at least another day, so there was no risk here. Renesmee beamed.6
I lifted her into my arms and sprinted carefully upstairs. Renesmee and I looked at Bella, so still and beautiful, lying on the bed. "Isn't she beautiful?"7
Without her touching me, I knew that Renesmee agreed. She did touch me a moment later, however, to tell me what she wanted.8
"Oh, you'd like your song again?" I asked, not surprised. "You've had me sing it half a dozen times today. You'll have your song as often as you like, and a thousand more besides. Soon I'll write you a whole book of songs, and I'll never ever stop singing, if that's what you'd like." She enjoyed that idea very much. I began the short lullaby I'd conjured up as she was nodding off to sleep.9
"Good night, my Renesmee, good night10
Sleep tight, my Renesmee, sleep tight11
I love you so much, I do12
And I'll always watch over you."13
She gave me a soft smile--how I loved her smiles--and reached to my face.14
"Yes," I answered her unspoken question. "We're all watching over Momma, just like we're watching over you." She snuggled into me as we watched my motionless angel.
Author notes
Twilight fanfic--well, Breaking Dawn, really. I don't own Twilight, BD, or any of the characters. I only own the lullaby.
Not happy with the lullaby. On fanfiction.net I used one that my mom's always sung to me, and had a disclaimer saying it wasn't mine, but that didn't feel right for a contest. So I attempted one in the same style that my mom makes up on the spot for my nephew.
Friends that I've let read this one said the ending was sad, because in the book Bella was in pain but unable to move during her change. For the sake of the story, forget that, because Edward -did not know- that. He thought that Bella was perfectly peaceful.
